Thanks so much! I am replacing the steering column, and I got the whole column pulled and then had no idea how to get that ignition cylinder housing off! I thought it was a rivet holding it on. I really didn't think I'd find a video on this. You saved me a real headache!
I’m not sure if you still use your TH-cam Rich, but on the cobalts could you please retag or just explain in text how to pop the black cover on the ignition switch. The one that’s closest to the key entry. I’ve already got the computer board cover taken off 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you for pointing me to this video. My only concern is can you tell me where the ignition switch is actually located? I have a 2008 cobalt, I have purchased a "standard US778 switch/communtateur/interrupter that I need to replace.
My steering wheel lock is seized in place. Will I still be able to remove the lock cylinder in the same way you did? Or does the lock have to be retracted?
Hey I have replaced the whole thing and got the column with the key that corresponds to it. But now I need help with the whole programming key and getting the car going
can i just loosen the steering wheel so i can just turn it to make it reflect my wheels? (when driving straight, my steering wheel is 90 degrees to left)
I have a question if my key ignition cylinder for some reason got messed up would it be the cause to my car's anti theft system being activated and not allowing me to turn my car on? because I believe this is the issue so you have any feedback? I'd greatly appreciate it. it's a Chevy cobalt lt 2008 btw.
richpin06a I bought my cobalt from a friend so what would I do? can I just replace the ignition switch myself or would i need to take it to a dealer? thank you for your reply I greatly appreciate it
Thanks great help I did all that however when i put in the new ignition and replace it, the car still wouldn't start and the lock symbol kept coming on
Did u figure out what the problem was. I've got a 2009 Chevy Cobalt and the lock symbol is becoming an issue. The car is capable of starting however the theft deterrent system prevents the car from starting for some reason.
I bought a 2006 chevy cobalt lt. the previous owner lost the key and pulled the ignition. I have not been able to start car and unsure of what it will entail to fix this issue. Help please!
I need help I lost my 2005 chevy cobalt key it has no chip reader what type of security does it have and before u say go to a lock Smith i dont have money for that I dont care how rigged the solution is as long as it works
please help, have an 06 chevy cobalt ss and I lost all my keys and I also have another 06 cobalt that I bought as a parts car and this one has all keys so I was wondering if I switch the ignition lock cylinder would I be able to reprogram it to my other car?
Well, as far as that security bolt was concerned... you lucky devil lol, ive had hell with some of those dam bolts, im sure some were locktighted in lol. Dam switch theif has sneaked in before you :-) Pullers are so handy, a mate could not remove a rear window wiper arm off its splines, so i nipped round home and grabbed my old two jaw sprocket pullers and a ring spanner, the window wiper soon popped off :-D. (No panal removing tools were harmed in this episode of richpin :)
richpin06a I have already had the lock cylinder replaced via the recall but I need to replace the switch. Do I need to disassemble the column as far as you did? or can I replace it when I get to the point where you noticed the switch missing? Great video by the way. Thanks.
congratulation for yours videos, they are very helpful.may i ask you shouldn't reprogram the ignition key, usually has a chip in it. Thank you for patience to hold the camera with yours teeth. It isn't easy.

What special GM tool did you use as steering wheel puller
Do you have any idea where a connecter goes with a green/white wire and a brown wire by the steering column
Very informative video, Thanks Rich, I always learn something from your videos.

Wasn't the key in the trunk at the beginning of the video...?
Do you have any videos on how to remove the steering column to a 2008 cobalt?
I do not at this time.
Just a view of each plug and how it plugs into each electronic device on the column

The shear bolt can be easily taken off with a socket designed for stripped bolts and replaced with an 8m x 1.25 x 20 cap head bolt.

A dealer can make you keys from your VIN.

I lost the key. How can I pop off the switch without the key?
The dealer can make you a new one from your V.I.N

Josenildo Silva You will need one key and you can program a spare key yourself if not it is off to the dealer or locksmith.
Please and thank you
You sound like Ted
Watch me watch a 15 minute video to not find the ignition switch -_-
