    On Today's Episode:
Not understanding hormones and calories is leading more of us to metabolic problems than a little bit. Unfortunately, losing weight and having healthier blood glucose levels isn’t as simple as eating less and restricting calories. To make matters worse, fasting, although a popular method of weight loss and health, is a lot more complicated than not eating.
In this we have experts such as Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Alan Goldhamer, and Mike Mutzel sharing their insights and research on how to approach fasting for weight loss and improved metabolic health.
Dr Jason Fung is a nephrologist and the co-founder of the Fasting Method program which has helped millions of people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes. Unlike many nephrologists, Dr Fung supports and encourages the education of diabetes and weight loss being possible through intermittent fasting. He’s a NY Times bestselling author and respected voice on fasting, weight loss, nutrition, and type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Alan Goldhamer is the founder of TrueNorth Health Center. His clinic focuses on healing patients through plant based vegan diets, and clinical fasting. Dr Goldhamer is also the author of The Pleasure Trap, Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health & Happiness.
Mike Mutzel is a functional medicine consultant in the natural product industry. He’s obsessed with evidence-based natural medicine and is the author of the Bell Fat Effect. Mike is also the founder of High Intensity Health.
    QUOTES:
“It's not just about the calories, it’s about the hormones.” Dr. Jason Fung
“You can’t burn body fat if insulin is high.” Dr Jason
“If you fast and exercise you actually lose more weight but more of it is lean tissue. If you fast and rest you mobilize predominantly fat and specifically visceral fat.” Dr Alan Goldhamer
“Drinking too much water can flush your electrolytes out and result in water intoxication.” Dr. Alan Goldhamer
“I’m not really concerned about fat loss as the best proxy for health.” Mike Mutzel
“Have the carbohydrate commence with the activity.” Mike Mutzel

    • @rredding
      @rredding ปีที่แล้ว +27

@@snacknnap you can find answers to your questions here on TH-cam.
How it works for me is: eat healthy (the stuff like "eat what your great grand parents could get their hands on", so not all the processed stuff, eat less refined carbs and absolutely NO seed oils).
      Prepare your own food.
You can eat e.g. 2000 or 2300 kcal per day, but you may start intermittent fasting. First occasionally, and over weeks make it your daily routine. This is much easier if your body is accustomed to low carb, high fat food.
After some months you may want to try a water fast.
You need to get the feel of it and don't hurry.
In the mean time, look up some info like from Nina Teicholz, Dr Berry. Read the comments and you see what works for others.
I feel perfect on one big steak, no potatoes or rice, and vegetables I only eat when I'm with others.
But that's personal, as a vegetarian you can do this also. For vegans it is more difficult to eat low carb high fat and get good nutrients, but that's only my opinion..

    • @dennisrobinson8008
      @dennisrobinson8008 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Hey, excellent results. You see all the excitement in these chats is for a reason! I would suggest making a full fast day. The "clarity" benefit comes about actually in the 2nd day of a true water fast. Growth Hormone is excreted by the body and most chemicals and inpurities introduced by foods and other substances are out of the system. We settled in on a "3 day fast" for that mind/body reset, it's great to go into a new workout routine or new diet system after this.
Alot of people are just doing "OMAD" ( One Meal a Day ) because as we get "older" you simply need less food. I have plenty of energy on 100 carbs or less. OMAD would have you in that 20-23hr "fasted" state. Some atheletes and physical performers even use OMAD and it works for them. They only eat what they need. @@zumiaurareadings1538

The obesity epidemic was likely planned from the beginning. You just need to know a bit about how people are, in general. You pay scientists to lie about fat being the problem instead of sugar. Then you begin this low-fat marketing where you introduce things like Snackwells which have a lot of calories but no fat. I also noticed that there began marketing in the 80s or so of the afternoon snack time. And then it became a thing for people to have a snack at 2:30. All of this makes money, from the consumer staples you buy at the grocery, to the multiple doctor visits and pharma scripts, to the expensive gym memberships that can be helpful but very few people realize that the food you eat is the biggest driver of your health. A trainer at Golds Gym told me in 1994 to ignore the low-fat, high-carb nonsense and that it was nonsense. They didn't talk about fasting back then but every once in a while you would see information about the science of leanness. But the general public is going to do what the government says because they trust them for some reason, lol. And here is the story in case you had not seen it.
      www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/09/13/493739074/50-years-ago-sugar-industry-quietly-paid-scientists-to-point-blame-at-fat

Of course when I first learned of water fasting my husband was completely against it. He was very confused and concerned why I would want to "hurt" myself. It's been several years. I never really tried to fast. Finally after lots of talks randomly. Videos. And chats. I fasted for 3 whole days (in front my my family) and the kids asked "why aren't you eating" and my husband said "she's fasting" lol. I've finally lost 10-15 lbs fasting on and off. I thought that I couldn't live 100% without sugars. But after fasting for 36 hours multiple times and doing 20-24 hpurs fast very regularly and quitting sugar for 6 months, I've realised that I don't really need sugar in my life. Occasionally, I eat sweets with monkfruit or stevia. But it's a treat that happens on special occasions. It's amazing how you can change your food preferences once you cleanse your body from all the processed foods 😮

From my understanding (lots of reading and podcasts like this) it seems you can do vegan and do it well, and do carnivore and do it well. I think carnivore is the easier way to get your vitamins etc (at the risk of eating too much, which Dr. Goldhammer talks about) but with veganism you will have to work quite a bit harder (again, Dr Goldhammer says you will need to eat pounds and pounds, and you need to supplement).
So, there is clearly an underlying mechanism/set of mechanisms that are more important to good health than being vegan or carnivore.
      And that seems to be:
whole, well raised or grown foods (
--> meaning grass fed, naturally aged, no anti biotic meat
--> and non pesticide added vegetables
--> minimally processed, meaning eat it in the form closest to the natural form. That means roast chicken versus kentucky fried chicken
--> with meat, eat the whole thing, especially organs and bones. Just steak is not ideal )
Fermented foods (for your biomes. Fermented cabbage is better than just stewed cabbage, for example)
      Fasting
Of these, fasting I think is the most important, because it "resets" the body, meaning other advice like "eat when you are hungry and stop when you are not" can actually work, along with "everything in moderation."
Those 2, good sounding, pieces of advice are terrible imho for people surviving on the standard processed diet.

But I feel great! It did take some time for my body to adjust (about 2 weeks)- but I am currently at 3 weeks and I feel awesome! I love the fact that ADF reduces my decision fatigue, and I don’t have to figure out what to eat every day- I just fast. Doing 2-3 day fasts will prevent muscle loss, something that is especially important the older you are. After 3 days the body will begin to lose muscle. It might be possible to offset some of that with weight lifting though, don’t know the science there.

Out of the blue I decided to eat once a day, dinner being a bowl of vegetables. Nothing during the day - just tea and 2 cups of coffee. I used to eat A LOT. And the amazing thing is: I don't feel week, I am not hungry, I have a really clear mind, I feel very good (not cold) - that is totally unexpected. I am a few days in, if it is so easy I have no reason to stop soon.

I only just started one meal per day fasting for two weeks, I went from 227.2lbs to 219.8lbs at this moment I am writing it. I feel great physically. I know it could have been water weight that I am losing, but losing 7 pounds within two weeks is still very good for me.
I only eat once a day now, but my energy level is actually pretty good, I feel less fatigue and starting to gain my mental strength on resisting food temptation. I work as a repair man so my job is physically demanding, yet I do not feel hungry even I only eat a normal portion once a day.
the hardest part for me is during the weekend when I relax. I am not hungry but I always wanted to bite on something. when I draw my attention away during work that I don't feel the temptation to get food.
I am planning to keep this up, and ultimately adapt into a three days fast.

If you do the three day fast take some water one glass with a tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of pink Himalayan salt it will help with the up and downs. Tea is helpful too. Of course no sugar or cream.

In the 1980s every processed food and drink was promoted as "low fat" with no mention of it also being high sugar or high salt to ensure attractive taste. However there was also a popular tag line "don't believe the hype" and the option to "think for yourself". It's pretty basic knowledge that excess sugar is stored in the body as fat. I learnt this in school in the 1980s.

So fasting while resting part of the time and eating when able to exercise would drop more weight is what I hear you saying. I have heard that varying when your eating window is while intermittent fasting helps keep your body from adapting to caloric deprivation. I was doing 16:8 - 20:4 and exercising just prior to my eating time. I lost 90 pounds in about 110 days. When COVID hit, I got very bored and was not able to go to the gym and dropped out of fasting. What a mistake! I ended up worse off. I did enter post fasting edema but it was not known to me. I am now working with my Dr. checking blood work and making sure I take in enough electrolytes.

My weight is still stuck fluctuating inside the same 10 pound window. Hearing that insulin is what’s causing this helps me realize I’m nit crazy. My doctors are all acting baffled and treating me like I’m lying about my food intake. It’s wild. I can’t even understand how my blood sugar is still sky high. Interesting, that last section with Mike there talks about a rhythmic IF regime, but I have heard from other imminent IF proponents that its better to vary your IF windows so the body doesn't adapt too heavily to the rhythm. I kinda get that as settling into a rhythm would mean your body is expecting food at the same time each day and will behave that way, but I also understand the circadian rhythm arguments... Slightly perplexing, but like all things it's going to be down to whatever works best for each of us...
