  • Norman Cocker's 'Tuba Tune' played on one of England's finest Tubas - Salisbury Cathedral!
    This is made possible through the use of Hauptwerk, and the organ console is my own organ in the BIS Music Room.
    As I write at the end of the video, I have made numerous changes to this sample set as I know the real organ fairly well. Please let me know in the comments what you think to the way it sounds!
    I was trying to take a serious picture for a thumbnail, but look who decidedf to photobomb!

    Ah yes. They say that in Heaven the Angels all play on Harps.
    But harps are Hell, just trying to keep the harp-strings in tune in the cloudy weather.
    Fortunately, we the chosen subscribed Patreons at BiS all know better.
    Of course the angels in Heaven actually play on Hauptwerk pipe organ tubas.
    Even God knows that. Thanks Richard. Glorious as usual.

      02:30 to 03:15 is the tricky section, IMO. I suggest: (1) Getting started on the piece asap! (2) Mastering that bit first, then learning the remainder.
      You can watch Richard here to see how he does it. IIRC, you can also use the virtuoso piano trick of taking a longer than minimal hand path between the semiquaver chords to enable your brain and hands to manage the transitions more easily. Just leave your finger tips behind as long as possible to avoid gaps! (Cathedral-like reverb helps as well).
      Good luck! 🙂

    Like others I thoroughly enjoyed this performance and would love to have even a general idea about the tweaks you made to the Salisbury sample set. I've heard the Salisbury organ but it's almost 40 years ago so I'm not in a position to give any comment on a comparison.
    I have the Salisbury sample set. I enjoy using it for appropriate types of music but was a bit surprised at the lack of volume and brightness unless a very large number of stops are "pulled out".

  • @MarcusReeves
    @MarcusReeves 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Very well played. That F# major section is a pig, at least for me it is! Salisbury is sounding good on your setup. I enjoyed the stereo image you have brought to the divisions, it’s very effective. And the brightness too. I find myself using the octave couplers often. Have you done anything to bring some surround into your dining room?

    • @beautyinsound
      @beautyinsound  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Marcus. Yes I've created some rear perspectives in the room itself using HW's Convolution Reverb, although these aren't included in this recording. The stereo image is based on the way the divisions are laid out in the north and south cases. Out of the box, I found this organ needed quite a few tweaks to bring it to life - it does indeed lack brightness and can sound rather muffled when using the foundation stops, particularly on the Choir I find. I also find the whole organ too distant, and wish I could bring a bit more clarity to the sound. I do believe that the producers of this set could release an update to bring it in alignment with newer organs... whether they will or not is a different matter.

    Very well played! I think your Salisbury set is sounding very good, perhaps not as lifelike as the real thing but I've had the Salisbury set since 12th December 2010 and have been tweaking it ever since. When you have it perfect, is there any chance of sharing your configuration file? I wonder is Milan have considered re-sampling in surround.

    • @beautyinsound
      @beautyinsound  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to hear from you GC! This organ is very old and is show it’s signs of age, but I’m really enjoying having an English cathedral organ on my setup. I didn’t find it overly satisfying straight out of the box, and had to work around the clock to get it ready for Marko (having only got it 2 days before he arrived at BIS!).

    This is not the Tuba in salisbury Cathedral. This is a recording of the cathedral organ playd back through this electronic control system. The result is hearing the organ from a single point system without the presence of the organ in the cathedral. It is no better than a digital recording except that it is under the control of the player. Nice performance of this piece. It is still an electronic gadget now matter how elaborate you make it seem. The organ was out of tune the day the pipes were recorded. just a note of interest.
