I had a mixed breed cat. He was part Bombay, Burmese and korat. He hardly shed at all. He looked like a black and white tuxedo but in the sun light you could see he was a dark sable brown. He had big green globe eyes. Very smart, loud purr, behaved like a dog and loved to play hide and seek. I swear he was understood English perfectly. Had him 15.5 years and miss him tons.

Allergies have nothing to do with the fur. It’s the cat’s saliva. When a cat grooms itself, the saliva dries on the fur and becomes airborne. It’s the dried dander that people are allergic to.

@@allcats8017 I would also like to add - the mutation of Spynx and Rex cats (the one that got them their "hair" state) also linked to the proteins in their saliva. And increases these to really high amounts. Thats why Spynx and Rex and similar breeds are absolutely NOT for people who have allergies

    • @Dustandfuzz
      @Dustandfuzz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’m allergic to the hair, which could be the saliva on it. I’m not allergic to cat dander. I’m allergic to dog dander, but not dog hair. Dog dander is heavier than cat dander so not much problem. I’m thinking of getting a sphinx cat or elf. I keep cats indoors so could do without all the hair around.

ALL CATS, ALL, CAN BE TRAINED TO BLOODY WELL "FETCH"! Mine would sit, stay, come, lie down and one even played "peek a boo". I lost both my girls (they were litter mate sisters) in 2020, 6 months apart. They were 11 years old. I've only begun to consider getting others. They'll be rescues. I've had a Siamese before and intelligent doesn't describe it, nor does "vocal". Beautiful girl, my first kitty. Then, it was a variety of kitties. As an adult, I was gifted a pure Himalayan. She was Seal point and stunningly beautiful. I didn't get any other kitties after I had to put her down. I was very sick and lost my job. I could barely feed myself. But, 8 years later, things were better and Abigail & Ireland were born to a stray that my special needs brother adopted. I'm 56, had my 1st kitty when I was 5 or 6 years old. Of, all my kitties, I never bonded with one like I did Ireland. Abigail too, but she preferred to rule from my bed. Ireland was glued to me. It won't be terribly long before I am ready to adopt again. I have to finish chemo first and I have an international vacation planned afterwards, then it's "kitty time"!

I've had several Siamese cats over the years and most shed very little. Of course, I combed/brushed them about once a week. That said my last Siamese was a Lynx/Seal point who hardly shed at all; BUT he still had dander which some acquaintances had a problem with. Interestingly, weekly house cleaning reduces the problem. Like others have said, cats DO NOT SMELL. They are incredibly clean creatures whose fur is groomed almost as a matter of pride. Their excrement, however, is an olfactory nightmare. However, if it is a problem, that would be owner error. Again, semi-weekly cleaning will address the problem. Other options are the litters now on the market which absorb the moisture thereby rendering their waste odorless. I have used this; I and my cat heartily approved.

It will destroy plumbing!). U add clumping litter when it gets used. I do not know where u live, but all supermarkets have clay clumping litter, we use the one from Aldi. The one from Lidl has a scent which is not good for cats. Use UNSCENTED litter always. We feed our cats wet food only and sometimes dry food very little as a snack. Their feces do not smell at all. This is so misleading to poor viewers. 1. Cats don't even smell. If you don't take care of the litter, that smells, but not the cat itself.
    2. People aren't allergic to cat hair, they're allergic to cat dander, which is in the cat's skin cells or scalp.
    3. Unfortunately there's no such thing as 'hypoallergenic'. If you're allergic to cats, you're allergic to cats.
That being said, I've been allergic to cats my whole life, but I've had cats my whole life. If you can get past the sniffles in the sneezes, cats are most rewarding companions.

In my experience, some breeds are hypoallergenic, and some individuals are even more so, producing almost none of the allergen, but no breed or individual is not allergenic at all. My mother in law can't get within six feet of a normal cat without her face swelling and her eyes swelling shut. We had her faceplant in my least allergenic Oriental Shorthair and her eyes turned slightly red and watered a little. There is at least some degree of difference.

Cats do not smell pretty much at all. In fact they smell good, I would love to bury my nose into their fur, they smell fresh, clean, and their fur even takes on a slight fragrance from whatever fragrances you have in your home. It's one of the reasons why I do prefer them over dogs. I'm sorry, I love dogs, but every dog I've ever interacted with (and it's been a lot) has smelled not so good. They all have a dog smell, some not as bad as others, but boy when you encounter one that really smells like wet dog it can be really off-putting imo. The only thing about a cat that smells is their pee/poop which makes sense because duh, but if you actually do a good job keeping the litter box clean, and your home clean, you really won't smell the litter box at all unless you are right next to it.

A social worker gave me the kitty and for four months I had to take medication because I was so allergic even had rashes on the soles of my feet which is like a form of torture. The allergy went away when my body got used to Wee and now I have the wee her two kittens from the pregnancy she got when I was hospitalized and now I have three kitties and zero allergy. From this list I've personally owned an abyssinian, and several orientals/siamese cats. I currently own two cornish rex. Orientals and siamese are the undisputed kings of cats in terms of personality, but they do shed. My cornish rex cats do not shed at all, but this is not always the case even for this breed.
The allergene is not the hair but a protein in their saliva and other bodily fluids called Fel d 1. So while having a non-shedding cat certainly helps if you are moderately allergic, it might not help much if you are severely affected. There's been a few of studies, and siberians do appear to have less then most other breeds of this protein. This might make them a better option for some people with moderate allergies, but the protein levels vary quite a lot individually between cats.

Just a couple of the capfulls every other day (in her food) - that's what I give my pussycat. She happily laps it up with her moist food and gravy (or jelly) - well mixed in of course - and it helps her to keep herself sleek and well-groomed too (as well as tending to keep away fleas (between fairly regular flea treatments of course). She still moults a little but not nearly so much as she once did (before I discovered 'Moult and Coat' oil). She needs very little brushing or combing ever since and she has NEVER had fleas return.

Smell? I never had a cat that had even tiniest whiff of odor, and I’ve had many, they often smell like my fragrance from lying on me, if not, like sweet, dry autumn grasses. If litter boxes stink, cats hate that and it’s not their fault, it’s a lazy guardian. Cats are always immaculate, unless they are living very rough, with no clean place to lie down, like on the street. I love dogs, too, but I just find it impossible to live with their odor. I can immediately smell if a dog has been around in someone’s house. It’s a shame, they can be a lot of fun, but I just can’t do it, I don’t get that olfactory fatigue as with other odors.

All cats very seldom smell, however, if you are allergic to their dander, bathing them every month will help drastically even with cats who shed a lot because the shedding is what pulls the dead skin cells which is what you are allergic to, not the fur itself. It removes the dander (dead skin cells). My aunt was allergic to cats but never had a problem as long as the cat was bathed regularly. :)

I’ve had purebred Javanese cats for years. I was told they are a non-shedding breed. Hahahaha. I’ve never had a long hair cat, these are a medium hair cat. They shed. Mostly twice a year. They are hard to get and are social and need to be with at least one other cat so when my cats died and I could only find one Javanese I got an oriental too. They hardly shed at all! They do get cold. My elderly Javanese passed and I’m going to have to get another cat for my oriental. I’ve been checking shelters but with covid this is going to be a challenge… I love both Javanese and orientals!

Only cats I figured didn’t shed were the hairless. In regard to cats smelling, what the duck? Cats don’t smell at all. Their litter box can get stinky if you don’t keep it clean, but cats don’t smell. Never met one cat in 30 years that have smelled. And I’ve met A LOT

I have people in my circle of friends who are allergic to cats.
With my Burmas in the past, this was not even a problem when they settled on them to be scratched.
With my Siams today, this is very much a problem.
Is probably a difference from breeding to breeding. Some cats of the same breed have the trigger "Fel d1" some do not.

I've had cats all my life~ from Abyssinian to Tabbies (plus all the shelters I've been to) I've never met a stinky cat.🤔 Anyway, I have 2 Russian Blues and brushing them weekly the combined fur is half as much as my Siamese, who I brushed every day, shed. Also, a lot of the fur is just ½ inch long and much less visible! It's among the most hypoallergenic breed, as well. To be clear, they still have the protein in their saliva & dander, but it's much less than usual, so people with mild-med allergies can enjoy them, too (cuz cats rock!). Well wishes to all ☺

Has said in video about the sphynx they are an high maintaintence breed you did to wipe their eyes daily, clean their ears every few days due to build of ear wax i bathe mine every 10 days and use pet wipes inbetween washes. If you are looking at getting a sphynx their body oils does transfer onto you and your clothes and also your bedding if you allow the cat on your bed. He disappeared , i think he died. Our vet said he had HIV and was 14 years ild which was 3 years ago. So i guess 17 years of life was all right for a cat with HIV. Allergy has little to do with fur but rather the protein in the cars saliva. Plus cats that have less fur generally struggle with the oil production in the skin consequently requiring weekly bathing. It is oil production that is part of the cause for odours

Using a spray bottle only increases aggression and fear in your cat. If you can't take the time to train your pet without being abusive then you probably shouldn't have one.
