    Greetings from Vancouver Island! I'm currently going through the fermentation module (I did the general certificate last year and was surprised at how detailed it got). I found your video quite helpful as it shone a little more light on the test than the previous years' exams have done.
    Either way, pretty nervous about the test and your vid is good motivation to get back to studying.

    Well done on passing your first module. I've been looking at taking it myself but I'm just not the academic type and prefer learning by doing and on the job experience. Have you found many distilleries employ people with this qualification?

    • @MissBrewbird
      @MissBrewbird  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm the really big distilleries want people with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Science, Microbiology, or Engineering usually. The small-medium distilleries will usually say they prefer people with some kind of formal brewing/distilling qualification like this, but you can definitely find a brewing/distilling job without a qualification. At the Borders Distillery, the distillery sponsored all of us to take these IBD qualifications.

    Hi Miss Brewbird! Congratulations on passing Module 1! Happy New Year from Singapore!
    I am heavily considering a masters in Brewing & Distilling at Heriot-Watt Uni in Edinburgh. In the Scotch whisky industry, how does that qualification compare with the ones from IBD?

    • @MissBrewbird
      @MissBrewbird  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say the Masters in Brewing and Distilling from Heriot-Watt University is more prestigious than the IBD. Heriot-Watt is famous worldwide for their Brewing and Distilling program after all. To do the Masters in Distilling from the IBD, you are required to be sponsored by your place of work. The last module is practical and you need to develop your own project and have someone at your place of work be your supervisor. I think the IBD Masters program also takes longer to complete than the Heriot-Watt one.
      I've met a couple of people who graduated from the Heriot-Watt Masters program, but never anyone from the IBD one, so these are just my thoughts on it.
      Happy New Year to you from England!

    It’s possible now to turn carbon dioxide directly into alcohol with an electrocatalyst. Meaning yeast is no longer required.
    Or the co2 byproduct could be collected and also converted essentially doubling alcohol production
    Sugar -yeast-> 2 alcohol + 2 co2
    2 co2 + 3 h2o -catalyst-> alcohol + 3 o2

      A google scholar search for “ethanol + electrocatalyst + carbon dioxide” might help

      From what I remember it’s copper sputtered on carbon (whether that’s graphite or graphene I can’t remember) and it’s low voltage for the supply (which I remember thinking was absolutely no help because it didn’t mention current but given how conducive carbon is, it’s probably low current too)

      Umm that wasn't specifically part of the course, but from what I gather there are a lot of people out there using crushed cores and pits. Usually it is not a problem because the cyanide content is so low, but this is just what I have read online, I am not an expert on this subject.

    I did the general certificate in distilling, and it was soooo boring ! 😴 I did my test a month ago ( with many ridiculous questions) and I'm still waiting for the result... 3 month to get it... its ridiculous! In the end... If I had invested £50 in distilling e-books 📚 and drunk £500 in alcohol would be much more worthwhile...

    • @MissBrewbird
      @MissBrewbird  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aww that's a shame. You signed up to do all three modules in 2021? That is a lot of work. If you have a strong science background, doing 1 and 2 at the same time should be okay. A lot of people find Module 3 the hardest since you have to memorise a lot of stuff and it is more calculation based, so if you have an engineering background or strong math skills it will be easier for you to do well in Module 3. I would save Module 3 to do in 2022, while the other two you should start going over the material now and going over the key learning objectives.
