    I was lucky to have had Mike as a trainer in the early 90’s. He was my idol before he won the Universe. Mike was an absolute genius. Thank you John for sharing his enormous wealth of knowledge.

    Contest prepping is extremely difficult. During my competition years, I tried not to be more than 15lbs heavier during offseasons. The problem with this I tend to hold my body back from gaining strength and mass because of calorie restriction.

    Did Mike ever talk about steroids in depth? I remember back in the 90's he and Dan Ducchaine (and Jeff Everson) had funny back and forth rebuttals in the magazines. The first article I saw from Mike was in Muscle Media 2000 back in the summer of 1994. Regardless, this advice is common sense and not to hard to follow. I have his Heavy Duty Journal for the 1979 Mr. Olympia and simply keeping track of thoughts and calories via the pencil and paper is a way to stay on track to reach a peak condition. I wonder what the 1980 Preparation was like? I have heard of the 500 hundred calories per day and being at deaths doorstep feeling and severely depleted ATP levels.

    • @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
      @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Brian, Yes, as he admitted, he placed "too much emphasis" on trying to win the 1980 Mr. Olympia, which made him realize that it simply wasn't worth it (particularly if the playing field was tilted). Mike wrote about steroids in the late 70s in Muscle Builder magazine. To my knowledge, he was the first bodybuilder to cop to using them and wrote about his dosages (which were comparatively modest compared to some other bodybuilders of the time).

    Somebody should do a study with high intensity training and the carnivore diet.. I dont think calories in calories out is the total answer especially when eating 50/50 saturated animal fat /protein

    • @declan5184
      @declan5184 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have been carnivore for a while, and training with mikes ideal program from his final HIT book has made the best gains I’ve ever made.
      200-300g protein 150-200g of fat, largely just based on my appetite. I listen to my body. Beef eggs and one/two cups of milk

    So what's Mike's routine

    • @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
      @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You might want to search the content of this channel for the answer to your question. There are at least four videos in which a routine is presented or demonstrated. And it will depend on what type of routine you are looking for. For Mike's actual workout routines that he used in preparing for contests, etc., or the ones he recommended for his personal training clients after developing a better understanding of the importance of regulating factors such as exercise volume and frequency. Then you'll have to determine what your tolerance for intense exercise is and make the practical application yourself.

    Mike Mentzer claims you'd lose weight by cutting calories by 500 no matter what the source, but forgets that the body can lower metabolism. It's not adding and subtracting, it's chemistry and endocrinology.

    What id argue against is his diet recommendations. Bodybuilders die young due to an abundance of inflammatory foods which then lead to plaguing activation of cholesterol. Without inflammation, cholesterol does not plaque. You can either have a high fat and high protein diet or a high carb high protein diet. Carbs in the presence of fat activate glycation of the cholesterol glycoproteins and adheses them to the vasculature. ---Why bodybuilders die young. 101. Also, testosterone increases cholesterol, which without an inflammatory state, isn’t bad. Simply avoid the carb fat combo and you’re fine. Calorie is not a calorie… kinda.
