This band is maybe the most important one in Japanese rock and metal history. They opened the door for sooo many bands especially all female ones. Bands like Band-Maid, Lovebites,Nemophila and so on probably wouldn’t exist without these ladies. The lead vocalist and the drummer have played together with other bands like Nemophila and Gacharic spin. And it worked so well
When I first watched Show-Ya and listened to Keiko Terada, after 20 seconds my reaction was WOW, Japanese Pat Benatar !!! Absolute legends that still provide an example to young musicians of how to perform. When Keiko performs with young bands, the impression is that she is the youngest and most energetic, although she can be a grandmother to everyone.
Show-Ya my favorite band and around since the late 1981. They were the ones who tore the doors open for all the female J/Rock or J/Metal bands to follow them in. Still rocking to this day, Keiko was my heart throb for years and still is an amazing vocalist. Lovebites have finally replaced Show-Ya as my favorite all female band and that was no easy feat believe me. If you want to see the "GLAM look of Show-Ya, David I give you the original Watashi Wa Arashi (1989) (th-cam.com/video/HDWgOKZ83Vw/w-d-xo.html) the David Bowie Glam Look but even then these women were wicked good. Unlike Joan Jett and the Blackhearts this band really ushered in the female explosion that never really happened in the States. LOVE this band so my bias will always color my opinion!!!!!!
This is a pretty old band, they started in 1981, this song was released in 1989. they disbanded in 1998 and reunited in 2005 and have been active since then, this btw was performed in 2005 the year they reunited. They do metal and hard rock and glam metal/rock I also noticed that there are a lot of all female metal bands in Japan lol sure not as much as j-metal male bands but compared to rest of the world I think Japan has a pretty big number of actually pretty good/decent all female bands for some reason. My favorites japanese bands are still mostly male bands but I also think the female bands are pretty good and talented.
The video is marked 2005. That would make it a concert from their 2005 reunion tour. Keiko Terada, their lead singer would have been 42 years old when this was done. They formed in 1981. The band that came to mind for me when I first saw them, was the Runaway's. Keiko's 1980's concert attire was Cherie Currie with a Victoria Secret upgrade. (By the way, I am not overly familiar with their discography beyond some of their hits, and some video footage. I will say this is one of their more basic songs.) I do know they broke big in 1989 after British Producer Andy Johns mixed two of their most successful albums In LA, Immigration (1987) & Glamor (1988). It was also at the beginning or Andy Johns move to LA, where he had a good run in the 90's.
The original name of the song is in japanese Watashi wa arashi. ( The original official video is better, in my opinion). Show-Ya was a band on the top in the 80 and 90ties. And do you know? Its thanks to them that i discovered my favourite Lovebites, through YT raccomandations. In some way, i am in debt with Show-Ya
The members of Show-Ya must be around 60 yo nowadays and still playing. There are some other bands from the 80 still playing. Anthem, Loudness ( I think the still playing) , the great band Ningen Isu and then we have the bubblegumpoppunk band without attitude Shonen Knife that makes me smile the hole day.
Yeah, as others have mentioned, Show-Ya has been around since the '80s, hence the glam metal sound. I grew up with that, so I think this sounds great. They were a massive influence for many of the all-women rock/metal bands since. You can even find a video of Nemophila doing a cover of a Show-Ya song on their official channel. It's hard to really pinpoint one band for what they sound like. But this riff does sound a little like the most recycled riff in heavy metal (search for the video by Ruthless Metal). That riff is Black Sabbath's Meglomania, perfected by Iron Maiden's 2 Minutes to Midnight.
Just came back and found you did this. Thank you! The influence isn't American, it's Deep Purple. The concert was in 2005, their 24'th anniversary tour.
Most of the old late 80's videos posted on the Internet are poor quality TV broadcasts. The one really good one I spotted is a restored full concert called "ROLLIN' WORLD - SHOW-YA Live in Tokyo 1989" posted on the Doc Loco TH-cam channel. The concert is broken down into song sections and there is a set list with starting and stopping times for songs. (If you can do anything with that.) The song Lovers was their biggest hit. I will try posting a link to this concert in the reply's.
The originals. There was a rumor going around that the guitarist is Saki's mother (Saki from Nemophila and Mary's Blood). Apparently that isn't true. They are all about my age which puts them around 60 now. The band formed in 1981 or so. They were rocking while I was joining the army, LOL.
Love your honesty David. The Japanese rock and metal scene is better than just about anything in the states right now. I have a band for you I just have to get on my PC and send you the link.
You should really check a bit of the history of a band before watching the video, it helps putting things in context, on why a song sound older and so on! Still love your reaction
6:20 They remind me of someone, an American counterpart. The only American HR/HM of the mid-80s I can remember are Vixen and Phantom Blue. To me, they looked more like 80s "happy and energetic" Deep Purple with Tina Turner as their frontman (woman) The keyboardist happens to be also a John Lord fan.
After the first few bars, I was thinking, "KISS"...After the singing started, I'm thinking the vocalist is weak, lacking conviction (weak diaphram?) A cut above average...6.4...ssshhh, Dave's talking...8.4?! Naaaa...oh, a lot of points for the stage show? ok...I'll give ya that...7.4 max, from me, though...I just found it generally dull, uninteresting, though well-written by current pop/rock standards. The song didn't really DO anything; it just laid there and looked pretty.
This band is godmother of modern Japanese female hard rock and metal bands.

Stand out songs from the set list are, their biggest hit Lovers, Come On, What do you say, I Gotta Your Love, Au Revoir.

KEIKO, is the Queen to Heavy Metal
Show-ya es la 1 banda femenina de heavy metal japonés(1981) y madrinas entre otras de Nemophila, Mary's Blood, Gacharic Spin, Scandal, etc
They remind me of a cross between Vixen and Loudness. Not my kinda jam but at least I gave it a try. :)
Miki Igarashi (Sun-Go) !!! 🎸🔥🤘
”Heart” ? American female group of same era.
