Finally Back To Work On The 1933 Ford 3 Window Project!!

  • This spring we moved the 1933 3 window onto the back burner while we focused on the Delorean Roadster. After shuffling some cars around for the winter the 33 is back on the ground and ready to get worked on!! Matt works on installing the steering box and bending the pitman arm to clear the split wishbones. After some work with the flame wrench, the steering is all hooked up, and it's time to turn our attention to the pedals. The car had firewall mounted brake and clutch master cylinders, but there is not sign of how the pedals were mounted. Matt has some under dash pedal setups to test and see what will work!!

Morning Matt, your 33 is probably my most favorite build, I missed out on a 33-34 when I was 15 years old(64 now), the car had a 2 barrel carbed DeSoto Hemi sitting in it, I don't remember to much about it except my Dad wouldn't let me get it, I'm over it....you all be safe!!! There's a new flu virus going around, I have it, I was in the ER twice over Thanksgiving.....God Bless!!

Loved the video! Car guys are big kids at heart, we all enjoy sitting in our unfinished rides and imagining driving the finished car. The miles put on our rides "pretend driving" are all part of the fun.

I also thought of flipping the bracket , on the first set . But it looks like you could just make a flat plate bracket , with the pivot lower , even back-set , to get your pedals down by the floor more . I agree , the use of that master cylinder set would both look cool , & be easily functional . I too like this car . It's kind of a clean slate , to exhibit what was done "back in the day" , from many different years & parts available , to "customize" a hot rod back then . Nice job on the pitman arm , less is more , & I feel it went perfectly . Smoke wrench included ! Great job , gents !

Great Matt. Got your steering. Your fabrication will get your pedals where you need them. Kinda hard without a seat. But sure you will get it the way you want. Thanks for sharing!

Matt, glad to see that you are getting back to work on the 33 3 window. The 33-34s are one of my favorites, chopped and channeled of course! I like the 32 roadster you are working on as well but I like the low-boy look better. as we said back in the day "low is the way to go". looking forward to up coming features on the 33. 😎

Awesome three window. I'd love to work on that. And good luck on the pedals. I imagine it will take time to get just that right feel since it's something you'll have to live with every time you drive it.

The appearance of this car is very cool. Seeing you working on the practicalities of the steering and pedals is a good demonstration of aesthetics not always aligning with the ergonomics. I have no doubt you will figure it all out.

The neat old chrome pedals are English Ford 100E. Late 50s Anglia, Prefect. Not chrome in the 100E, of course, but I recognise the bracket. The bolt spacing on the bracket matches the English style Girling master cylinders.

    Keyboard hotrodder here:
1- hang those original pedals on the stock location [so the rods line up easy]
2- mark & cut 'em at full depress [to that angle in the firewall]
3- weld some rod or other similar metals [from other projects] to extend those pedals back to where they are comfortable[
I can see in the video where you want to put your feet. Put the pedals pads there and connect the dots back to the masters. [even if you gotta mount those masters in reverse ;) ]

on a different subject at your shop , every one of these videos I take notice to the when the garage doors are down
I keep seeing all this light coming thru the under the bottoms of the doors, hence " heat loss & bad drafts on cold windy days !!!
I see you guys had all that work done up stairs, and yet the place you spend most of your time in has these " wicked "
door gaps that you could pass " cigars " under or more !!!
that is a easy fix to pour concrete for a flat sealing surface / or now to cold to pour ? / at least a length of 2x6 x 3/8" or 1/2" channel steel upside down ,
the length of the doors imbedded in the stone for a flat sealing surface .
I'm sure your favorite scrap yard you always brag about would have that material handy for that small task !!
JUST - SAYIN !! KEEP UP THE GOOD HUSTLE YOUR GETTIN THEM DONE !!!!!

Another great video/explanation of the build process! Had the same problem with my '46 Business Coupe compounded by the Power Glide transmission. All the foot space just disappeared. Had to move the seat back (people were smaller back in the day). Then had to mess with brake and gas pedal spacing for a week. Trick I used for getting the bend in the custom brake pedal bracket was to make a beer box template of the shape and then outline it with heavy copper wire taped to the outline shape so it would hold its shape while trying to find the proper bends and angles. Once it worked around the column, I fired up the torch and matched the bend with the template. Pain in the ass but loads of fun! Go Iron Trap, keep moving forward!

Question/suggestion: Do you ever go back to your old vids? It has been so long since you worked on this car, there might be good ideas in previous segments that you have forgotten. I also suggest you rig up a pretty good simulator of the seat you intend to use. That foam cushion can't be as thick as the real seat will be. You need to fit your thighs under the wheel, and still be able to move your legs to get to the pedals. Your body size, position, and range of motion need to be accounted for before you figure out where to mount the pedals.

I'm confused as to how are the pedals going to work with the 2 master cylinders up so high? Seems like they are as high as where you bolt the pedal hanging plate, and above the pivotal point. I know that I can't really tell from my point of view though.
