The thing is, by toning down the sexualisation of the Nurse and the Lying Figure, they've inadvertently ruined a core part of the game's original design philosophy of the monsters. The reason why these creatures were depicted in sexually exploitive ways was because they're meant to represent Jame's sexual fustration and lust. Remember, Silent Hill was meant to be more psychological horror which meant that everything seen in the game was meant to reflect on Jame's guilt and warped psyche.

Undoing the sexual nature of the nurses really dulls down any potential implications they had to james. I love to think that with pyramid head and that nurse scene, that it was showing us james had been disloyal to his wife. Symbolism like that is important in silent hill. Play thr original game, or dont bother working on it.
I took one look at reddit in regard to this redesign and they praise it. The claim is supposedly "She now really looks 19" and... Honestly? Seeing that redesign for the first time I got the impression of a 30yo Karen about to ask to see the manager.
I think the original one looks older like late 20's and the other one does look younger around teenage age, but they don't look like the same person is the problem.
I'm the opposite opinion - OG Angela looked older than 19 and the remake looks her age. But that's the problem - Angela *isn't* supposed to look her age. The fact she looked much older in the first game was a deliberate design choice to show that the CSA she endured did as much damage to her physically as it had mentally. The remake just makes her look like a generic teenager/young adult (she actually reminds me of Sadness from Inside Out). The voice acting doesn't help, either.
I think these companies are trying to walk a fine line where they want to appease fans but also politically motivated games journalists. Not to mention the larger shareholders want to push this on us sadly.
Angela original face was the box art cover for the original silent hill 2 game for over 22 years. People are very well attached to ghat face for decades by now. Not to say changes are not needed but it should still stay more faithful to the original vision.

Maria was also hot-looking because of story reasons. As James wife was sick Maria was likely the way James wanted his wife to look like. The game featured a lot of sexual themes and "guilt" themes. So censoring them takes away from the plot. "Modern audience" Arkham Asylum a single-player game from 2009 has more players playing right now 15 years later than Suicide Squad live service MP games from recent times....... I think the numbers speak for themselves. SH2 also seems to have very high system requirements. An RTX 2080 is stronger than a PS5. So I wonder how much they spent on game optimisation. And you can even have to fog to cull rendering.
The contrast of sexy and horrifying is what made the nurses memorable. Juxtaposition done right can be amazing, the new character design just doesn't have it.

Yes speaking about the nurses, look up the upcoming nurse toy. Androgynous and no heels, no chest. Angela should look gaunt. Maria should be a seductress and appeal to James for protection. Something he...you get it. Only true complain is gunshots and combat should sound loud and impactful. Guns should also potentially attract enemies and players should weigh the risks of using them. That's a more dynamic and in-depth combat. Sigh.

For me, this sucks all the joy or excitement I would have from doing anything creative. Because if I'd succeed, then my creation would one day, probably sooner than later, become warped for "modern audiences". The fact Bloober is also making this game is also a problem. They do not have a good track record with making games, alot of their games are either mid or god-awful. Examples include The Medium, which is mid, and Blair Witch, which is awful.
I'm not even a SH fan and this makes me want to buy the original PS2 release. Edit: I saw Sonic Frontiers on their list of projects and I checked the IMDB page as well as the back box art and I couldn't find their logo anywhere, so I don't know if they didn't want to be credited or if they lied about their involvement on their homepage.
Hey, I played and loved Silent Hill 2 back in 2003 when I was about 12 years old. I've played through multiple times and gotten the first three endings. (I didn't care enough to go back to get the three secret endings because it's just too much of a hassle honestly.) and Silent Hill could use some work to be honest. Combat is very weak and by the time you get the pistol you'll hardly be taking damage for the rest of the game. So the combat does need an overhaul but I don't want this game to become Resident Evil 4 or it's remake. Puzzles in the original get exhausting to deal with and will have you going from room to room looking for things and back tracking looking for things you've missed thanks to the low lighting. I really don't have any issues with Angela in this trailer. she's not pretty and that's fine because at least to me, it symbolically tells me she's probably insecure and has self doubts. As for concerns regarding her back story, it's never alluded to during the game before the Abstract Daddy boss fight. In fact on my first two play throughs I didn't even know what was going on until AFTER the boss fight and only because of her reaction to James reaching out to her. all we do get is a easily missed note laying on the floor that says that Thomas Orosco had been stabbed to death. Even then it's never confirmed in game that Angela had that done to her but the messaging is pretty clear what was trying to be conveyed without coming out and actually saying it. The Abstract Daddy monster is Angela's version of Pyramid Head, and I think it's far more impactful for James, (And us) to face off with the monster with only a few of the details only to learn after the monsters defeat what ACTUALLY happened. I've said this before in other videos regarding SH2R, Silent Hill was always at it's best when it was comparable to Resident Evil and they both shared a lot of common features. The first three games in both series had fixed camera angles, auto aim combat, the same or similar tank controls, and a focus on puzzles and exploration. the only real discernable difference between them being Resident Evil had inventory management and Silent Hill actually had scary atmosphere. This all changed in 2005 with each series fourth entries. Silent Hill 4 isn't a bad game, sure it doesn't hold up as well as the first three games, but it's biggest failure comes from it's comparison to it's rival game from Capcom that release the same year. Enter Resident Evil 4. The game that revolutionized the survival horror genre. Fewer and less complex puzzles, over the shoulder shooting, and a focus on combat and engaging gameplay instead of relying on the games atmosphere to do the heavy lifting. Every successful survival horror game to come out after 2005 has either copied or taken inspiration from resident Evil 4. From Resident Evil 4's own sequels to Dead Space, The Evil Within, The Last of Us, Alan Wake, and even Resident Evil's remakes have all followed the standard that Resident Evil 4 set almost 20 years ago. Meanwhile Konami just doubled down and threw everything it could against the wall hoping to find something that sticks and can give Silent Hill it's own Identity. An effort that clearly failed and became more and more apparent with each passing failed game. Silent Hill: Origins played just like the first three games in the series and was something that was clearly not wanted any longer. Silent Hill: Homecoming got a lot of the lore wrong and just wasn't willing to go balls deep into it's own combat system, despite it's combat system being it's main selling point during it's promotion at the time. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories had an interesting idea but fell short because it went in the opposite direction as Homecoming and removed combat completely, thus leading to a game that most people neither bought or bothered to finish due to it's boring nature. As for Silent Hill: Downpour, it was too little, too late. A game that had no idea what it was supposed to even be at this point and all it could do was call back to the series best plot points. The Bogey Man was just knock off Pyramid Head. Murphy might be a blood thirsty convict, but he might not. Anne much like Cybil Bennett only survives based on the actions and kindness of the main character. So my take away from "appealing to a modern audience" means improved gameplay with less complex puzzles and less back tracking. The original SH2 had a riddle difficulty that you chose at the start of a game. I see no reason as of yet to doubt this game and yes I do in fact have an issue with this whole woke agenda that has been being pushed into our games and movies for too long now. That being said, characters like like James, Eddie, and Angela aren't supposed to be attractive. they are supposed to be relatively normal. I'm fine with James being a solid 6/10 because that still fairly average. He's not tall, or muscular, no CHAD chin, none of that. Angela is a 4, maybe a 5/10 in this trailer because she's not fat, she isn't muscular, and she's not a boss babe. (Seriously though, simply not being fat does soooo much for your attractiveness.) Eddie however is fat as hell. There is a reason why his version of the other world is a damn meat freezer. Maria is the only character that was supposed to be, "Hot" in the original game and even all the way back then in 2002, the character still had a layer of body fat on her stomach. She was supposed to be the sexy, sultry, fun, and kinky version of James wife Mary who looks like your typical church going Christian girl. Maria is basically a Silent Hill monster in a skirt conjured up by James and her entire reason for existing was to distract James from his actual quest to find his actual wife by providing a more "Fun" alternative.
You know how Konami offered the choice of the OG VA cast in the remaster or the new one.. Imagine if they do the same with this.. IDK maybe we have a choice of based cast or woke cast!?
This makes me scared for the future of MGS and it's upcoming game, Delta.... just can't get hyped anymore. Meanwhile Capcom is absolutely raking in all the money with Resident Evil 4 Remake.
My biggest problem, oddly enough, is the set pieces being visible during gameplay. The fact that you could never see more than 15 feet in front of you clearly is what made the game so scary to begin with. You didn’t have any idea if you were about to stumble into an enemy or obstacle. The entire game was claustrophobic, like you were somehow being buried alive, and it was horrifying.
Honestly the monsters not being feminine is worse to me than androgynous Angela because the monsters being feminine and even sexy was a representation of how James desire, literally one of the 1st scenes with Pyramid head the representation of James masculinity and his desire to punish himself, is him struggle snuggling one of the monsters to death.

Undoing the sexual nature of the nurses really dulls down any potential implications they had to james. I love to think that with pyramid head and that nurse scene, that it was showing us james had been disloyal to his wife.
Symbolism like that is important in silent hill. Play thr original game, or dont bother working on it.

I took one look at reddit in regard to this redesign and they praise it. The claim is supposedly "She now really looks 19" and... Honestly?
Seeing that redesign for the first time I got the impression of a 30yo Karen about to ask to see the manager.
I think the original one looks older like late 20's and the other one does look younger around teenage age, but they don't look like the same person is the problem.

I'm the opposite opinion - OG Angela looked older than 19 and the remake looks her age.
But that's the problem - Angela *isn't* supposed to look her age. The fact she looked much older in the first game was a deliberate design choice to show that the CSA she endured did as much damage to her physically as it had mentally.
The remake just makes her look like a generic teenager/young adult (she actually reminds me of Sadness from Inside Out). The voice acting doesn't help, either.

I think these companies are trying to walk a fine line where they want to appease fans but also politically motivated games journalists. Not to mention the larger shareholders want to push this on us sadly.
Angela original face was the box art cover for the original silent hill 2 game for over 22 years. People are very well attached to ghat face for decades by now. Not to say changes are not needed but it should still stay more faithful to the original vision.

And that is wrong also. Voice acting in original was precisely as it should be. As if normal people were in the game. They remade voice acting already in horrible Collection with professional voice actors, and it was abysmal. Completely missing the point. People who say OG VA was bad, don't know what they are talking about.

What they should've been doing is target the casual audience. Make the game more like a fortnite or Pubg clone. Or make it an open world multiplayer and sell demonic cosmetics. Those are the only games who still make some money after going woke. Not games like SH, with a specific playerbase.

The contrast of sexy and horrifying is what made the nurses memorable. Juxtaposition done right can be amazing, the new character design just doesn't have it.

Yes speaking about the nurses, look up the upcoming nurse toy. Androgynous and no heels, no chest. Angela should look gaunt. Maria should be a seductress and appeal to James for protection. Something he...you get it. Only true complain is gunshots and combat should sound loud and impactful. Guns should also potentially attract enemies and players should weigh the risks of using them. That's a more dynamic and in-depth combat. Sigh.
They've been trying to sanitize Silent Hill 2 into marketable plushies for a while now, this is just them codifying it into the games.

The fact Bloober is also making this game is also a problem. They do not have a good track record with making games, alot of their games are either mid or god-awful. Examples include The Medium, which is mid, and Blair Witch, which is awful.
I'll wait until a year or two to see how they treat mods which change things to be more like the original game.

Edit: I saw Sonic Frontiers on their list of projects and I checked the IMDB page as well as the back box art and I couldn't find their logo anywhere, so I don't know if they didn't want to be credited or if they lied about their involvement on their homepage.
Hey, I played and loved Silent Hill 2 back in 2003 when I was about 12 years old. I've played through multiple times and gotten the first three endings. (I didn't care enough to go back to get the three secret endings because it's just too much of a hassle honestly.) and Silent Hill could use some work to be honest. Combat is very weak and by the time you get the pistol you'll hardly be taking damage for the rest of the game. So the combat does need an overhaul but I don't want this game to become Resident Evil 4 or it's remake. Puzzles in the original get exhausting to deal with and will have you going from room to room looking for things and back tracking looking for things you've missed thanks to the low lighting.
I really don't have any issues with Angela in this trailer. she's not pretty and that's fine because at least to me, it symbolically tells me she's probably insecure and has self doubts. As for concerns regarding her back story, it's never alluded to during the game before the Abstract Daddy boss fight. In fact on my first two play throughs I didn't even know what was going on until AFTER the boss fight and only because of her reaction to James reaching out to her. all we do get is a easily missed note laying on the floor that says that Thomas Orosco had been stabbed to death. Even then it's never confirmed in game that Angela had that done to her but the messaging is pretty clear what was trying to be conveyed without coming out and actually saying it. The Abstract Daddy monster is Angela's version of Pyramid Head, and I think it's far more impactful for James, (And us) to face off with the monster with only a few of the details only to learn after the monsters defeat what ACTUALLY happened.
I've said this before in other videos regarding SH2R, Silent Hill was always at it's best when it was comparable to Resident Evil and they both shared a lot of common features. The first three games in both series had fixed camera angles, auto aim combat, the same or similar tank controls, and a focus on puzzles and exploration. the only real discernable difference between them being Resident Evil had inventory management and Silent Hill actually had scary atmosphere. This all changed in 2005 with each series fourth entries. Silent Hill 4 isn't a bad game, sure it doesn't hold up as well as the first three games, but it's biggest failure comes from it's comparison to it's rival game from Capcom that release the same year.
Enter Resident Evil 4. The game that revolutionized the survival horror genre. Fewer and less complex puzzles, over the shoulder shooting, and a focus on combat and engaging gameplay instead of relying on the games atmosphere to do the heavy lifting. Every successful survival horror game to come out after 2005 has either copied or taken inspiration from resident Evil 4. From Resident Evil 4's own sequels to Dead Space, The Evil Within, The Last of Us, Alan Wake, and even Resident Evil's remakes have all followed the standard that Resident Evil 4 set almost 20 years ago. Meanwhile Konami just doubled down and threw everything it could against the wall hoping to find something that sticks and can give Silent Hill it's own Identity. An effort that clearly failed and became more and more apparent with each passing failed game.
Silent Hill: Origins played just like the first three games in the series and was something that was clearly not wanted any longer. Silent Hill: Homecoming got a lot of the lore wrong and just wasn't willing to go balls deep into it's own combat system, despite it's combat system being it's main selling point during it's promotion at the time. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories had an interesting idea but fell short because it went in the opposite direction as Homecoming and removed combat completely, thus leading to a game that most people neither bought or bothered to finish due to it's boring nature. As for Silent Hill: Downpour, it was too little, too late. A game that had no idea what it was supposed to even be at this point and all it could do was call back to the series best plot points. The Bogey Man was just knock off Pyramid Head. Murphy might be a blood thirsty convict, but he might not. Anne much like Cybil Bennett only survives based on the actions and kindness of the main character.
So my take away from "appealing to a modern audience" means improved gameplay with less complex puzzles and less back tracking. The original SH2 had a riddle difficulty that you chose at the start of a game. I see no reason as of yet to doubt this game and yes I do in fact have an issue with this whole woke agenda that has been being pushed into our games and movies for too long now. That being said, characters like like James, Eddie, and Angela aren't supposed to be attractive. they are supposed to be relatively normal. I'm fine with James being a solid 6/10 because that still fairly average. He's not tall, or muscular, no CHAD chin, none of that. Angela is a 4, maybe a 5/10 in this trailer because she's not fat, she isn't muscular, and she's not a boss babe. (Seriously though, simply not being fat does soooo much for your attractiveness.) Eddie however is fat as hell. There is a reason why his version of the other world is a damn meat freezer. Maria is the only character that was supposed to be, "Hot" in the original game and even all the way back then in 2002, the character still had a layer of body fat on her stomach. She was supposed to be the sexy, sultry, fun, and kinky version of James wife Mary who looks like your typical church going Christian girl. Maria is basically a Silent Hill monster in a skirt conjured up by James and her entire reason for existing was to distract James from his actual quest to find his actual wife by providing a more "Fun" alternative.
They covered up Ashley's ballistics in RE4, but she was still gorgeous and she was still Ashley.
They made Angela trans. Just say it.

My biggest problem, oddly enough, is the set pieces being visible during gameplay. The fact that you could never see more than 15 feet in front of you clearly is what made the game so scary to begin with. You didn’t have any idea if you were about to stumble into an enemy or obstacle. The entire game was claustrophobic, like you were somehow being buried alive, and it was horrifying.
