  • When Dani Olmo ditched Barcelona at the age of 16, eyebrows were raised. Why did one of La Masia's brightest talents decide to leave and sign for Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia? We uncover Dani Olmo's unconventional path to stardom, which has led him to star for both RB Leipzig and the Spain national team on the biggest stage. Croatia has produced some of the best midfielders in the world over the years so it was a very smart decision to go to Dinamo Zagreb who also has one of the top academies in the world. He learned the language, embraced the culture, and got to play European competitions as a young player. It's not easy to prove yourself at Dinamo but he did it with a lot of hard work 💪

No foreign player has this much respect in Croatia. Even Dinamo's rivals and their fans knew he was class. When he scored that banger of a goal against Man City I instantly knew he was not gonna stay here for much longer because he showed he was ready and capable to make the next step towards a bigger league and club. Unfortunately he had quite a lot of injuries in the last year or two that kinda stalled his rise, but I'm certain that his work ethic, dedication and love of football will help him clear those obstacles.

I just wish more youth players follow this kind of path. Stay humble, choose development and playing time over money and prestige. Dany Olmo is smart. Zagreb isnt particularly a big club as compared to the likes of Bayern, Liverpool, and Manchester City but they do play European football consistently and boasts good academy graduates. The experience he got in Zagreb helped him as a young player, when he moved to RB Leipzig this helped him big time. Even coming from a famed academy like La Masia doesnt guarantee you first team opportunities. Hope we see more of this coming rather than seeing talent get wasted sitting on the bench in some top 5 big league club.

bought him at his 20 y.o. by only €8.5 mil to my newly promoted side of salamanca uds on fm 19. he is really beast on front of goal, scoring at least +15 goals & dozens of assist every season, while i put him as left inside forward. one of the best purchase i've ever had in all of football manager series i ever play. he has such bright prospect now. hopefully someday he will come back to barca and bring another treble with himself as indispensable player

I only started to know Dani Olmo while watching Spain national team in 2020 Euro. Didn't know he garduated from La Masia.
His skill is an exceptional level. He should not play at EPL, any prolonged injury would destroy his magic

Not really, seems like that's the common destination for the players these past decade , and now that barcelona changed their policy towards la masia for this new administration seems unlikely he's gonna stay at bundesliga.

    • @ML3180

Sad for who? It's a short career at the top so he'd be smart to make the most out of it rather than return to a club that's basically cooking books to stay up and a league that's doing its best to look the other way.

This story is a great example to show to all the pushy parents in the world. And not just those with kids playing sports. Even kids being pushed academically. Taking the well trodden path just because 'that's what you have to do' is not always the answer. Sometimes you have to look at a person as an individual, and collectively come to a solution that rightly fits their characteristics, personality and needs. I went through a similar experience as a child.
Born to two pushy surgeon parents, they always tried to make me do what other intelligent kids were supposed to do. Which tutor to go to, what and when to study, which school to try and get into etc. Just following a stereotypical blueprint. I rebelled, stuck to principles and decided that the normal school I went to was the best for me. This despite the kids of all of their doctor friends making fun of me for turning down private schools etc, and how they were doing so much better. Fast forward 3 years and I ended up bettering most of them at the end of year exams, and also the grades required to get into my preferred university. These parents pushing their kids into expensive schools thought that money would magically turn their kids into a load of Einstein's. Instead, most of them were miserable, lonely and away from family at boarding School, and also suffered a lot of bullying. Just because you're supposed to do something, it doesn't always mean it'sitsright for you.
