      Glad I could help! I have later learned that the 3rd battery can be charged via the USB-C connection on the camera, so you can actually charge all 3 batteries without taking them out of the camera at all! I love USB-C! It has made my life so much more simple! I look forward to the day when all gadgets can be charged via USB-C! (no, not a USB-C salesperson, but just a happy end user! - my next iPhone hopefully has USB-C!)

    nice review... What made you switch to the Fuji and back to APS-C?

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks! I did not switch to Fuji and APS-C, I simply added the Fuji to my portfolio. I still have my D750 for shooting in low light situations (it is KING of darkness focus) and I also have a Sony A7 for landscapes, bot FF. But I was attracted to Fuji because the street photographers I follow produced some pictures that to me looked really "clean" and so I was attracted to Fuji. I got a XT20 and it confirmed that the pictures were more "clean" or tight than my Nikon D5600. So I continued with Fuji, and it has now replaced my D5600. My Sony is still my preferred camera for landscapes, the Nikon for low light situations, but my Fuji is the "jack of all trades". I have later invested more in Fuji, as I found that the lenses - although not cheap - are absolutely stellar, which several reviews from Ken Rockwell and others also would hint.

      @@frederikboving Thx for the info in reference to the weight. You can charge the X T3 without the battery grip, using an external power bank such as the an ANKER Powercore+ 26800PD, the 20000PD version or any similar USB C external charger. You can find this info on the FujiAddict website. I use the Poweradd EnergyCell 5000 Power Bank and install it on a cold shoe. Works great! You can see the charge icon on the camera display indicating that the battery is receiving a charge from an outside source. As far as the grip, there are options for very well made grips that not only give you a better hold, but will protect your camera as well for around $30.

      @@Vikingdescendent Thanks for sharing! Yes, I use my 20W charger for my iPad to charge the XT3. I am impressed that the XT3 will accept that much muscle when charging, but it does! Btw, if you really want to go nerdy about the XT3 and charging, this link has all the details: domvarney.com/2018/11/22/powering-the-fuji-x-t3/ - stay safe!

  • @Vikingdescendent

    I find the X T3 is heavy enough without the grip. In Canada, the grip is $400. plus the cost of the two extra batteries, plus 15% tax. Ouch! But there are third party alternatives.

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Vikingdescendent, yes the Fujifilm price policy for accessories is the steep kind. I wonder if they sell their bodies at low prices, the lenses fair prices and then make all the money on accessories? I seem to remember that there was a SMASH offer on the XH1 with a grip combined some time ago. Maybe that is the way to get a grip without feeling robbed - simply buy a grip as a part of the kit deal when upgrading the body next time? Alternatively buy used. I have a used grip for my Sony and it saved me 50% and works like a charm.

    Great review but can you power the camera from the wall in the studio using the ac adaptor without worrying about batteries?

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The manual gives absolutely NO help at all here!
      I tried to take out all the batteries, and only have the adaptor mounted, and the camera switches on, and then flashes a red signal indicating it misses the batteries and shortly after it shuts down. So the camera cannot work just with the adaptor. If I put the battery in the body, and no batteries in the adaptor as such, it seems to work fine, but it is difficult to see if it runs on the batteries or on the power supply. If I insert all batteries, then it also works with the adaptor, but what happens is that the 3 battery indicators drop to one battery indicator as soon as I insert the adaptor. So my guess is that is starts charging the 2 batteries in the grip when they are less than 100%, irrespective of the use of the camera or not. I will need to do some more through testing to answer if the batteries are being charged with the adaptor mounted and at the same time using he camera. I guess the latter was really the answer you were looking for?

    • @smallbizdigitalmedia
      @smallbizdigitalmedia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@frederikboving many thanks for testing this. I will only be using the camera plus grip in the studio for video interviews and just have the single battery that came with the camera so was hoping not to have to buy more batteries. It would be good to know whether I can still do this either with the battery in the body or in the grip but obviously not with no batteries following your test!

    You should of course also add a grip to the Nikon for comparing weight....

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. However, the main reason for me buying the grip to the X-T3 was the shallow grip and the short battery life - both problems the D750 does not have, even without a grip.

    • @rafdegreve
      @rafdegreve 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@frederikboving I am so doubting to buy the X-T3 OR the deal on the X-H1. Now, I sold my Nikon D600 and holy trinity, as I did not take it with me anymore, nowhere... I have now a little X-E3, and take it with me allways. It boosted my photography again, but... I also want to upscale again, with heavier lenses 23 1.4, 56 1.2,... I am afraid the X-H1 is again too big and will leave it at home again as my NIKON...

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Raf, your concern is very valid IMO. The f/2 lens lineup from fujinon is quite strong, so if you can live with a little less fast lens, the f/2-ish lenses (I have the 50 mm and 27mm) are light and excellent value for money. As soon as you go to 1.2 and 1.4, the lenses become heavy, the camera becomes "nose heavy", you need a larger body to keep it in control, and you quickly slide into buying a grip with even more weight etc. So a XT20/XT30 with no grip and the f/2-ish lens lineup would be my suggestions for a "go anywhere" light setup.

    When I shoot an hour-long video with the battery grip, the camera gets hot. Do you know what the solution to this problem is?

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can only guess but video is very taxing for the camera as it involves a lot of CPU work to constantly read the sensor content 25 times per second and translate the data to the memory card. So when shooting for extended periods of time it generates a lot of heat that the camera needs to pass on somehow to avoid overheating. Not sure if there is a solution, unfortunately.

    Does the xt3 plus battery grip match the ergonomics of the d750 for you?

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope is the short answer. The D750 has a deeper and wider grip that fits my big hands better. Also, the distribution of weight is better in the d750 IMO. The xt3 is not bad, the D750 is just better. Very subjective. Very dependent on personal preference so please do not see my answer as more than just one guy's opinion - I'm sure you can find the exact opposite opinion if you look for it.

    • @bbowles3
      @bbowles3 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      frederikboving I see thanks I also have large hands and am thinking of making this exact same switch. I have really been loving the ergonomics of the d750. But traveling with a large camera and lenses is so impractical! The thing is, I actually do shoot in portrait quite a lot so I can see the portrait with a grip being better then the d750 with no grip.

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right. The portrait mode of the Xt3+grip works really well IMO. The buttons sit where you'd expect them to and the quality is as you would find on the camera itself. If your goal is to travel lighter, then be warned that the fast fujinon glass is quite heavy and if you want to travel light (and not burn all your budget on glass), then see if the f/2 glass from fujinon suits you. It is SO much lighter - both in terms of weight and budget. I have an "ergonomics" review/compare of 3 light lenses here: studio.th-cam.com/users/videoV5LwhKaTS44/edit
      Hope it is useful.
      Best
