I love everything Tournemire wrote, a fascinating combination of late Romanticism, impressionism and his own distinctive mysticism. Thanks so much for posting!
For those who want a taste of his orchestral music, I've posted score videos of two of his symphonies on my own channel, with more to come :) I particularly treasure his sixth symphony, a masterful choral symphony that's perhaps my favorite work in that entire genre!

    Undoubtedly an inspiration for Messaien.

maybe a little bit, especially early Messiaen, but I dont think this would have given him too much inspiration, in the sense of "they sound very similar". However this WAS made during Messiaens earlier days, so it is possible. I assume he wouldnt keep this inspiration for long though, as Messiaen made his own taste in music so unique to himself.

There are other Tournemire piano works that appear to have had more direct influence on Messiaen, e.g. the Douze Préludes-Poèmes. Certain of Tournemire's organ works were also clearly an influence.

I’m speechless.. Such weird, wonderfully personal characters and interesting harmony! How did you discover these pieces? I’ve never heard of them nor the composer..

I first got acquainted with l'Orgue Mystique, the organ cycle that's probably his most famous work, as well as Tournemire's symphonies. I was so fascinated by his cycle of eight symphonies I purchased scanned manuscripts of six from the French national library! Since then, I've put many of them on IMSLP and also made score videos, for example of his titanic sixth symphony - a stunning choral symphony that rivals Mahler: th-cam.com/video/K_2T7QW5EjQ/w-d-xo.html

He wrote much more worth hearing! You can find score videos of two of his symphonies on my channel (more to come.) The sixth symphony is particularly impressive - a 50+ minute choral symphony depicting the suffering of the French people during World War I. For me, it's by far the most underrated choral symphony from any era and is as compelling as any Mahler! th-cam.com/video/K_2T7QW5EjQ/w-d-xo.html
