What Alonso did was phenomenal. You can see how much pace advantage Mercedes had over him, yet the way he moved simply left no room for overtaking
When you have nothing to lose and the person racing you does it makes your job easier. Lewis can’t afford to take those risks, he is fighting for a championship
He was helped by the track which is a hard one to overtake on, and the fact that Hamilton had way more to lose.
Then there's the Merc which is a big car and also has problems following other cars and got conceptually hurt by the floor regulations).
All 3 of these comments are true but you can’t say Alonso isn’t an incredible driver, world champion 2005 2006 gots to remember that

Alonso is such a nice guy, so different to his younger years. I remember Nico in commentary saying he would be so angry or frustrated or something if he were in fernando's shoes seeing your teammate win when you only finish 5th. But alonso was clearly so happy for ocon and it was so nice to see.

The reason why Fernando is happy for Ocon is that, unlike most of the drivers now in F1, Ocon has no background. From Wikipedia:
While competing in karting, his parents had to sell their family home, which included his father's garage, to fund his karting career. After selling the house, they lived and travelled to races in a caravan Ocon also used as a motor home.

Huum, Ocon did a great job against Perez, Hungary is hard to overtake so easy to defend. Ocon tried to attack Perez but he was on medium while Ocon was in hard and of course the guy got a Redbull.

Words can't describe how happy I was for Esteban that day. Him and Fernando during that race was perfect teamwork. Well deserved win!
Honestly I still wanted Vettel to win despite knowing its going to be Ocons first win. But watching Alonso defend from Hamilton like that reminded me of 2008-2013 a lot so it still felt great.

If Aston martin pit crew did a better job than it was different story cuz in this track its not easy to overtake and Seb was much faster till last couple of laps, but still big achievement for Ocon, alpine and for the Legend Alonso

What surprises me is Alonso fought knowing he's got older tires, and a car that is way slower than Hamilton's. On the other hand, many of the people who were on similar strategies or just fighting Lewis for position never actually fought him and let him just go. Tells you it is tough to fight that car-driver combo. Hats off to Alonso. Alpine signed the perfect junior driver ;P
It's not like Alonso hasn't done this before. If he can defend against Michael Schumacher for 11 laps with a depowered engine to win the 2005 San Marino GP, he can defend against anyone.
He was told Ocon was leading and Hamilton was on pace to win so he was notified to make it extra harder on Hamilton. It was fun

This was an amazing race. I loved how Ocon didn't know what to do at the end and had to improvise haha. And also his race engineer reminded him to drink fluids. Amazing to see a teammate celebrating a junior's first win ever. Amazing wholesome race when the underdogs win it.
Just shows how amazing Alonso is he did everything he could to get his teammate his first win. I remember watching an interview of Alonso after the race saying that was exactly what he was doing he slowed down his own car to keep Lewis back and basically sacrificed his own race because he knew if he wasn't coming in first his teammate at least should. What an absolute legend!

I had to come back after the Qatar GP just to witness how great of a job Alonso did, watching them both celebrate at the end feels like Alonso was a proud father and ocon was his son. Really brings joy to anyone, no matter which drivers they’re a fan of
Thing is, Ocon was really important for Alonso in Qatar, like he kinda repaid him there. A bit sad that they seemed to work so well together last season and then sort of fell out.

Man, Alonso is the beast at holding Hamilton up. And if he didnt locked up at lap 65, I think Alonso would have held Hamilton up till the end.
Don't forget that Alonso was on hard tires and Hamilton on mediums. Hamilton wouldn't have any chance with equal tires.
Alonso can literally be placed into any car and push them pass it's expected pace. 2017 is the most recent example (pushing a backmarker into being a decent-ish midfielder) or you can also look at his Ferrari years

One of the best races I have ever seen and the driving from Alonso just WOW
Mercedes messed up really bad at the start but Lewis recovered back to P3, his drive was brilliant. Alonso's defense was absolutely crazy and Esteban's mature drive topped off a great race.
Lewis is an expert in coming through the field, we don't see it much because he has been a the top for so long.
The finish torpedo plan seemed to have worked pretty well in terms of championship
@@jinanshmehta3518 he didn't have to overtake any of the difficult-to-pass cars either, apart from 1 Ferrari.
The remaining McLaren (which is probably the hardest car to overtake) and Red Bull were damaged, and the rest of the cars were at least a second slower.
The real reason Lewis didn't win was Alonso somehow keeping him behind, despite Lewis having a 3s pace advantage at the time

@@ligamo Gonna have to wait for a year or 2 more for Seb.. he would be the perfect commentator because he has a lot of experience with rules (and exploiting them), incidents, racing current gen cars and winning races in them, he knows what it takes to win in these cars and what it feels like to be on the up or down. Also he has a nice sense of humor but thats subjective I guess.

i may have cried a little at the end. ocon went through so so so much and fought hard to get his spot in the grid and i’m still so happy he has a win to his name. of all the drivers on the grid, he’s one of the most deserving of it.
