Humility is the best self defense tool. Our pride causes us to do or not do things that end up getting us into trouble.

I completely agree. I always have a 500+ lumen flashlight on my keychain, and have it in my weak-side hand whenever I go out into the night. Keyring on my pinky, thumb on the button. I love that it will stop anybody in their tracks. And that even after the light is gone, they can't see well to pursue me. And I love that I get to take one anywhere, including through TSA checkpoints.

The most valuable self-defense tool that I carry each and every day is what’s between my ears. God has given one to each human being, and sadly most of us don’t use them well.

Of course your mindset is number one along with your training and experience. Being retired LEO, I always have a pistol and spare magazine, always. I also always have a tactical flashlight (streamlight protac 2L-X). I also carry pepper spray and a good folding knife with pocket clip. I also have years of experience and training that have benefited me greatly in my life. You mentioned avoiding trouble and I cannot emphasize enough how important that is. Our pride is not our friend and should not be allowed in the boardroom when we are making decisions that could affect our families safety. Many road rage incidents are caused because one of the drivers could not back down and yield to a fool. All the tools in the world are useless without the knowledge of how to use them. Good discussion.

Jason covered it pretty well. But the most valuable defensive weapon is your brain, because everything else - whether it is a pencil (a la John Wick), or a selective fire 12 gauge - is just an accessory. But like any useful and dependable weapon, it needs to be properly maintained and prepared. If that primary weapon is engaged, you always have it with you, and you should always be imagining scenarios and what to do, "just in case." This should always include looking for the exit, evaluating possible threats, and staying loose enough but primed to react. And keeping it clear of drugs, excessive booze, and distractions.

I will agree with everyone else in the comments, and say that a good quick mind and good situational awareness, and the ability to keep cool and resillient under pressure are the best self defense tools. Anything else past that is just the tool with which you will implement those things.
As far as tools, I cannot own a firearm, at least in my current state residence. So, my goto for home defense , and for when im out camping etc, is my trusty 4 foot long hardwood closet rod. I have 3years of Wahlum training, including forms for staff and spear, so it is the weapon i have the best skills in using. It has served me well on more than one occasion, and it doubles as a bindlestaff and or walking stick when i am out on adventures as well

Self defense class from law enforcement is just about useless, they are over equipped and usually the aggressor. A plastic spoon will go through flesh and ive seen people not phased at all by a tazer. The flashlight is a great idea to blind your opponent if its over 300 lumens and dark outside

    1. The clichés: your faith, your mind, your prevention strategies. 2. A firearm 3. A non firearm ranged weapon. 4. A melee weapon. The specific choices for each number depend on a variety of factors such as your need for concealment vs. open carry, your need for carry comfort, laws and social factors dictating what is legal or acceptable, your environment, and etc. For example, if I can not legally carry a firearm, I may be able to carry a black powder revolver and a large knife. If concealment isn't an issue and I can legally carry firearms, I may opt for an ar15 or a shotgun. The answers depend entirely on the specifics of my situation.

The number one survival/defensive tool is you mind. Parasympathetic breathing, a calm state of mind under threat, control of heart rate, confidence, you get the idea.
As far as the tool in your hand, discretion, legality, surprise factor, weight, etc, depend highly on personal ability and skill sets.
    A little known fact:
In the vast majority of public places in the United States, including bars and hospitals, an axe, even a giant battle axe, is totally legal. It's a woodworking tool.
A multitool on your belt, same thing.
A tactical pen you can break windows with, and store a miniferro in, also an option.
A firearm has limited uses and environments. The last thing you want is to miss the target, and hit an innocent.
I prefer a combination of lethal, and nonlethal, legal, 'grey man' options.

  • @hildolfrdraugadrottin7279
    @hildolfrdraugadrottin7279 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Good pepper spray and the ability to use it effectively is a pretty good nonlethal tool. It's pretty hard for anyone regardless of how tough they are to continue what they are doing when their eyes and face is on fire. You can always deploy your next line of defense and go to work with that if needed.
I've seen some pretty rough people dealt with using pepper spray. They normally stop their bad behavior after receiving a face full of pepper spray.

(A 2 pound rock attached to a 2 foot stick)
Or any modern equivalent: Collapsible baton
    Tire thumper
    Small bat

    Can be lethal, or not.
Easy to wield and doesn’t require a lot of training.

Visual acuity is the first step in prevention, reaction, and dealing with any self defense situation. You can’t deal with what you can’t see, so a bright, simple, impact resistant and quickly accessed light is my choice.
Bright so as to access a lot of information and deny information via blinding, destroying night vision, creating a flinch response, and taking advantage of the photonic barrier effect.
Simple (on or off) with a single mode so as to simplify the operation under stress and prevent accidentally going into a dim “admin” mode under stress.
Impact resistant, specifically “potted” where resin has been poured over the electronics inside to prevent them from shaking loose under impact for striking or when waving the light around for signaling for traffic to stop in an emergency.
And quickly accessed without much digging around. I personally am a firm believer in the Thyrm Switchback ring/clips even if that does limit the flashlight selection of brands/models. Funny enough, it limits it to mostly lights filling the other requirements. The Switchback allows for faster access and deployment of the light than any other clip or ring option on the market that I have seen.

I conceal carry, however, it does have a limited amt of ammo you can keep on you & you will run out, plus someone with a knife can close the distance before you can draw and fire. I agree with the minds importance, but in combination with some type of full contact martial art. If you are training somewhere that doesn't allow contact and sparring, go somewhere else. If you do not know how to take a hit, many hits and learn how to handle it and keep going, you really won't be able to handle it out of the blue when you are sucker punched or worse.

    I tease. Sorry.
I live in a very rural place. I wish I had a rifle or some sort of firing apparatus. Mainly for the animals who come around occasionally and threaten my pets. What I have is a siren in a can (works surprisingly well I must say) and a 3 foot long, 2 inch diameter solid tree limb resides next to my door. I haven't had an occasion to test that out for which I'm grateful.

I guess it depends on the mind set of the bad guy. I carry a Stinger Tactical Whip which is100% pain compliance but non lethal. I live in a free state I can carry a Becker BK 9 with no issues or my 1911 either one. But I stay aware with my head on a swivel. I stay out of bad places.

I have seen pepper spray used at point blank range on a dude wearing glasses and jacked to the eyeballs on some drug and it didn't even phase him. I'm not sure how much was due to the glasses and how much the drugs, but my friend seeing it didn't phase him sprayed again changing the angle to get it under his glasses, again it didn't phase him at all. I think the thing that momentarily confused him, allowing her to spray him a second time was the fact that something was being sprayed in his face.

@ It’s not about blinding, it’s about inhaling and irritating ability to breathe, nasal and throat constriction, a response that is physical not mental as in drug influenced resistance. However, if that person is attacking, escalation to more lethal means may be necessary. (That’s why spray, not gel is more effective.)

Your mind. Followed by a sidearm with good training. Any time you can avoid a situation and you escalate it instead, you’re a fool. That said, a flashlight is great for PID of your possible threat. A knife is great for making space to get to your handgun. Your handgun is great for getting to your rifle. But if at all possible, avoid over escalate. If you cannot avoid the situation, you most likely won’t have the resource of time needed to go find a weapon to defend innocent lives against evil. Needing a weapon for self defense and not having one is akin to needing a parachute and not having one. There’s no good way out of the situation.

    Hi
So it all depends on what country you're in and what laws are and whether it's permissive or non permissive environment
It could be anything from a torch to yourself or even calling on Christ or something like a knife a gun a stick a dog etc😊

Mindset. It’s the least trained and most useful self defense tool.

A flashlight is not a defense tool. Not for most. Ask any welder if a flash has ever stopped them for any length of time. lol The 3 stooges invented a self defense against a flashlight attack way back. Just cover your eyes. Look away. Just like we teach our 16 year olds to not stare at the bright lights.
Anyone who thinks a bright flashlight will magically buy them time, hasn't been in many street encounters. On the contrary, my EDC flashlight is very dim in comparision. I don't want every person within 500 yards knowing my location.
If a person doesn't have and practice good self awareness, it doesn't matter what kind of weapon they carry for self defense. Also, the person must be willing and able to flip the switch from calm to violent. Not like sparring in a gym. All the physical self defense techniques in the World are useless unless the defender is capable of meeting the force with equal or more violence. Winner decides when the fight is over. Defend yourself and get the heck out of Dodge. Hanging around might give the attacker a 2nd chance. Or his buddies.
If anyone is ever in a serious self defense situation and has used a flashlight (not as a club) to stop a threat, I'd love to hear the details.

You're brain 1st, 2× karambit knife, or 2× 18 inch pieces of hard wood 1inch diameter, or 2× 18 inch "blades. Unfortunately firearms for "self defense" is prohibited in my country.
