I honestly don't understand why people call him obnoxious, I think it's very pleasant to listen to him speak and he seems to be a nice, warm person. Besides a wonderful musician who stays curious and creative.
You heard him talk about the studio system. It's populated with the corporate types who are really dispensable to the final product, yet managed to ensconce themselves there to enrich themselves and make the whole music production process painful. You discern the same theme when Smith talked about a speaker before him trotting out all the MBA-speak as he plugged a promotion for Pepsi. If Smith is obnoxious, I speculate it would be a piece of propaganda spread by the corporate leeches who just didn't like the fact Smith calls them for their con jobs.
He’s adorable. When he was younger he could kind of get a bit snobby at times but who is actually all that tolerable at 22? Haha. He’s a total gem. He clams up, though, the more famous he gets. I think he gets cagey. He’s never been comfortable with a huge amount of fame.
I was ten feet from Curt and his wife in Valencia last summer, I’ve always been a fan of Tears for Fears. And literally had seen them months before in the uk before I moved But, I let him be. I knew he is a private guy and didn’t want to approach you have to respect they are people.
Curt is his own person. Not trying to fit a narrative. I understand why he went silent but I’m also thrilled he’s written/created the new album with Roland. I saw them recently (May 2022). They seemed to really enjoy performing their work their way. I’m appreciative for all the great songs and memories I have affiliated with them.
9:21 - "if I'm happy I don't write songs". I can SO relate to that. I've been writing alot of songs lately (nowhere near his professional standard obv! But it helps therapeutically.)
Very insightful... I'm so glad you continually express your creativity in your own way. Yes, us fans don't know the real you. But the amazing talent we've seen for decades now makes us love you & wish we really knew you. I don't blame you one bit for disliking the crazy fans who ripped your shirt off. When I first fell in love with TFF I was 13, & at that age, with no father in the house, you & Roland made a huge impact on me...
March 2022 and I'm only just watching this now wtf! However what an insightful interview/talk. I was 6 when I 1st heard TFF and over the years, the lyrics told me alot about the artists and hence my deepest appreciation for TFF. Kurt is one of those artists where you got a taste of them as a person through the lyrics.....LOVE IT 🙏
I actually got a lot out of this in terms of coming out of your comfort zone and challenging yourself which is something that's been holding me back for a while (so I may end up coming back to this and watching it again and again). I am an actor; creating a non-profit organization which teaches a free acting workshop to veterans with post traumatic stress disorder; our primary goal is to prevent veteran suicide through the healing gift of acting.. because acting literally saved my life. I feel terrified to be teaching something I never went to school for, all of my experience has been on stage and on camera; I've performed in front of over 1,000 live audiences; I've even performed with celebrities in the audience but for some reason have trouble just being me within a small group (to teach) and I still don't know why. But I'm determined to step out of my own comfort zone; challenge myself and hopefully create something which might one day change lives - hopefully save lives.
really enjoyed this Curt. Grew up with your music and then forgot how much i like Tears for Fears until you rekindled my interest when i saw you at Camp Bestival. Missed your at Hyde Park event but i am keen to see the band again soon. As for this TED - thought it was really insightful. thanks
I know that he's not fond of the gift of "celebrity" when an artist is blessed to actually get paid to do what they love. I just wish that he'd allow us to love him however we chose--while we can, considering what's he's giving us. His contribution will last for eternity, even after he's gone. That's just the beauty of music. If we're screaming our heads off, and ripping off his shirts--so be it! Roland once said that he likes the "cuddles". He was younger then, of course.
...so much so that if I had the chance during my teenage years, I might have been one of those crazy fans undressing you. Thank god I grew up, and have enjoyed your music as you've also matured and your music has evolved. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. :)
I appreciate what Curt Smith went through in the consideration of Fame. But it doesn't really matter what you do, but who are you are. I found it as our attitude and behavior that follows the veins of our evolutional flow. If we allow ourselves to become too polluted with too much information we limit ourselves. We no longer have the capacity to apply the lessons learned on the journey that interests us. Now it seems we're just trying to tread water in any system we find ourselves in. So to me it's interesting when I can actually see this transitioning happening to other people. When it becomes stunning and people are stunned it's like a blockage in a vein. To go forward sometimes they have to go back to the simpler times, natural and unrehearsed. We are symptomatic of cause and effect. Sometimes we just have to take a pause.
I think that Curt is first honest, humble, skilled and curious in life so as testing many ways, but overall I also think that he should be very diplomatic and patient as Roland Orzabal even if he is great, I guess that he could sometimes be a little bit weird.
Firstly, I'm borrowing my daughters Google account (don't have one yet). I am Alice Erskine. I don't know how this all works, specially so many years later. In case you see this, I left a comment on your 12/22/2010 post of this wonderful video on your FB. Hope you read it.
Curt did perform to Manila??? So we were breathing the same air that time. 12/13k audiences is a LOT to be honest but i wasn’t one of it 💔 Great talk, fame gives you an overwhelm experience. Of course as a person, it makes you uncomfortable. I don’t know what those “fans” were saying that he’s living in his best life and yet not grateful for that. I mean, could you be grateful if someone ripped your shirt? Could you?... I guess not.
Albeit a very dry/wry sense of humor. Curt strikes me, only from watching his/their interviews of course, as serious and no-nonsense - very much in touch with reality, as evidenced by his/their lyrics. All I've ever seen of him so all I expect.
Curt, I gotta tell you though, you were HOTTTT, incredibly beautiful when you were young. You were prettier than Roland. I loved the way you sang with the kids, back then, you seem so soft and approachable... then the cracks started appearing!!. Anyways, you were incredibly gorgeous... ooh la la!!
albert huerta curt states here that he felt uncomfortable with the fame and didn’t like it also he wanted to do his own thing so he wanted to live a normal life and enjoys that much better with his family he has
Intellectual? If it takes an intellectual to be on Ted Talk, does that mean one must be an intellectual to qualify to be worthy of watching it? Would you qualify? But, hey, I understand what you are saying. Still, Curt has a unique experience - how many people create one of the biggest bands in the world, then walk away from it because they understand how artificial fame is and how important life and family are? There is much to be learned from that alone. BTW, try getting any of the so-called intellectuals that are on the show to write some tunes that contribute to changing peoples lives. LOL
So... one needs a PhD to do a freakin TedTalk? Since when? Here's a thought: The man is incredibly accomplished. Are you? Where is your TedTalk? Link it. Please, enlighten us!
Well you should have been grateful to the fans who made you famous. Roland is really the star. Curt is so obnoxious. You lost your identity Mr. Hollywood, change your accent and all... Because of those fans, you living the high life. Go talk to those bands playing day in, day out, trying to make it in the very difficult business. Get a grip Curt...
You obviously haven't followed him on social media over the years. Curt Smith is one of the most respectable celebrities out there. He doesn't flaunt, he's not "obnoxious," and he is absolutely grateful. He deserves every ounce of credit he gets, just as Roland does. Tears For Fears is Roland and Curt whether you like it or not. And really? Picking on his accent and claiming he "lost his identity?" As if you know him and who he's supposed to be. How ridiculously childish.
I honestly don't understand why people call him obnoxious, I think it's very pleasant to listen to him speak and he seems to be a nice, warm person. Besides a wonderful musician who stays curious and creative.
I never heard anyone call him obnoxious. He's one of the nicest men you can meet.
I’ve always respected overall how curt tries to stay true to himself. A lot of people now forget that in the day to day life and don’t realize it.
Its so nice hearing from an intelligent, insightful, honest musician that isn't f@cked up by their own ego.
An amazing human being.
I was ten feet from Curt and his wife in Valencia last summer, I’ve always been a fan of Tears for Fears. And literally had seen them months before in the uk before I moved But, I let him be. I knew he is a private guy and didn’t want to approach you have to respect they are people.
I’m 14 and I’m so glad that I’m a fan of this band
Same I’m 13 and I’m glad my mum brought me up with this kind of music
Curt is his own person. Not trying to fit a narrative. I understand why he went silent but I’m also thrilled he’s written/created the new album with Roland. I saw them recently (May 2022). They seemed to really enjoy performing their work their way. I’m appreciative for all the great songs and memories I have affiliated with them.
I’m introverted just like him. Nothing wrong with it, I completely empathise with him. And I think he’s actually very funny.
9:21 - "if I'm happy I don't write songs". I can SO relate to that. I've been writing alot of songs lately (nowhere near his professional standard obv! But it helps therapeutically.)
Wtf. Curt Smith on Ted. and i only find out 9 years Later. I thought I was a huge fan
Eli Sonic same lmao
Me too😅

I love Curt

So adore this man!! - Tysm for this vid.

After their concert in 2004 at the Beacon Theater in NYC he smiled and walked onto bus. Curt signed what he could and was a lovely man.
Very true. An honest and inspiring talk from a wonder person and creator.
big fan of him!!
Curt is the best
...so much so that if I had the chance during my teenage years, I might have been one of those crazy fans undressing you. Thank god I grew up, and have enjoyed your music as you've also matured and your music has evolved. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. :)

Si, nunca lo hacen, pero igual es lindo hablando inglés, se le ve q una linda persona
I think that Curt is first honest, humble, skilled and curious in life so as testing many ways, but overall I also think that he should be very diplomatic and patient as Roland Orzabal even if he is great, I guess that he could sometimes be a little bit weird.

Why did tears for tears break up ? I'm 25 so I wasn't around.
albert huerta curt states here that he felt uncomfortable with the fame and didn’t like it also he wanted to do his own thing so he wanted to live a normal life and enjoys that much better with his family he has
How long have roland and curt been separated?
Since early 90s
I'm a big fan. My mom used to play their music when I was a kid. I understood the music as I got older and like it. Anyway thanks for the info.
Separation old news. Together again today.
Great Talk. I was hoping he would end with a song. Then I’m thinking, it’s not Curt and Friends, like some corny tv show from the 70s. Lol. 🙄.
I bet a lot of people quit watching because of the computer voice intro..
Good Lord...can this dude blather (...and blather...and blather...)
I'd rather hear Roland, honestly. Roland kept it up after Curt bailed out.
what do you think a ted talk is? he’s supposed to “blather.”
JESUS you were my fav from TFF not now stop talking just use our perfect voice.
Curt Smith did a TED talk? Hey, I like Curt Smith, I love him in fact, but he's not exactly an intellectual.
Intellectual? If it takes an intellectual to be on Ted Talk, does that mean one must be an intellectual to qualify to be worthy of watching it? Would you qualify? Um. Wow. Such a tear-down. Sounds personal! Are you an ex?
Don't drink and type.
