Tram and Light Rail in Karlsruhe, Germany

  • Today we are in Karlsruhe in south-west Germany not far from France.
    Karlsruhe is a midsize city with approximately 300,000 people; it is the second-largest city (after Stuttgart) in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. In Germany it is known for its excellent technical university, its Baroque palace as well as hosting Germany’s two highest courts: the Federal Constitutional Court and the German Supreme Court. It is also known for its expansive tram and light rail system, which achieved international recognition and gets copied around the world as the “Karlsruhe Model”.
    The city has 71 km of tram lines, which serve the city proper. This tram system is shared with a light rail system called “Stadtbahn Karlsruhe”, which has a system length of 262 km and reaches far beyond Karlsruhe itself. Many of the light rail lines actually use mainline railway tracks outside of the city. This gives smaller towns around Karlsruhe a direct rail access into the city centre and its high street.
    This film shows tram and light rail traffic at various stations around the city centre. European cities often have a pedestrian-only city core, which in Karlsruhe is directly served by the tram network. Since several years there is ongoing construction works to build a tram and light rail tunnel under the city centre.
    The tram and light rail stocks used in Karlsruhe are quite diverse with models from several eras. At the time of filming the following stocks were in use: GT6-70D/N, GT8-70D/N, NET-2012 (tram) and GT6-80C, GT8-80C, GT8-100C/2S, GT8-100D/2S-M, and ET-2010 (light rail).
    More information on the tram system: en.wikipedia.o...

    Enjoy!

    I really miss Germany, especially Karlsruhe (aside from Frankfurt where my plane landed) as it was my first city I visited when I first got to Germany. Definitely will be going back someday. :)

    I was in this city 5 years ago for 5 days only. It was the only place I've been in Europe so far. I rode the train on those 5 days and it was very convenient. I hope we can have these light rail trains in Cebu City as it doesn't need to be elevated and is much accessible to all passengers.

      They are building a tram tunnel under the Kaiserstraße, the main shopping street. And to keep the contruction area dry, they are pumping the groundwater via the pipelines out of the city.

      A "bit" late, but that was not the case here. The blue pipes were for emergency flooding of the underground construction sites in case of the ground breaking to prevent buildings from sinking in and collapsing.

    Why do so many cities join two trams together? It doesn't make sense, it is much more helpful to run them as two separate services, or get a single unit that is already six sections long...

    • @mz7316
      @mz7316 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In Karlsruhe, it is likely because buying longer trains isn't an option because some lines have lower demand than others and running more frequently is impossible because the system is already at capacity and adding so many additional trains without even more construction than their current tunnel project is impossible. Also, a long tram-train would be 75m long and isn't offered by manufacturers, probably requires new maintenance facilities, etc... Coupling two together makes so much more sense.
