      This is 100% correct. I swapped an 04 STi 6 speed into my Bugeye in 2015. The amount of research and leg work I had to do in order to complete my swap the way I did was staggering. I was going on a very budget approach so I wanted to use very specific parts. The only regret I do have is not doing a newer transmission with the stub adapters for the front axles. At the time though, that wasn't as popular of an option in my reading. Having said that, everything I learned along the way including the final drive ratio and how it's different based on the center diff's ratio (1:1 or 1.1:1 IIRC); combined with the different options in axles and why the hubs are the way they are, was covered in the first 10 minutes of this video.

    I'm going to try and get a 06-07 STI 6 speed at the end of the year for my 06 WRX and been doing my research so correct if I'm wrong. In order to do the swap I will need the 06-07 transmission, either a auto drive shaft (if I'm keeping my r160) or get the STI shaft and differential. Now the next part is if I'm keeping my r160 I can keep my axles and hubs but I'm hearing the diff is weak, but if I go the r180 route and get hybrid axles it might be better. Just want to make sure I got everything right there thank you.

    Holy moly, that's tons of info. Correct me if I'm wrong, but here's what I got for my specific application (stock 03 WRX sedan): If I were to do a 6-speed swap I would really only need the transmission, STI shift linkage, drive shaft, and the conversion to make the male/female front axels work, but should probably upgrade to the STI clutch and flywheel as well? Thanks for any info!

    Idk if you're still taking time to answer questions. But first and foremost I used this video to buy and install a 6spd in my WRX. It was all good unill I made 502 awhp. I since went to rwd (shortly back to awd) but I just bought an r180 and the rear knuckles from an 05+ sti. I will be taking all the parking break things with it as well as the hubs. So my question is will the rear knuckles bolt up to the 05 wrx shock/strut? I have 2 pot breaks aleady .

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really isn't that bad. If you factor in the labor that it costs to rebuild a 5-speed, the 6-speed swap really is a pretty good value in many cases.
      The wiring can be a little involved, but it is not bad in our experience.

    Your guys' videos are so awesome. Super informative and well explained. Thank you guys for taking the time to make these videos to help us all out.
    Are all the steps the same for swapping in a JDM 6 speed into a USDM 2005 WRX? My only concern is that perhaps the speedo cable on my USDM WRX wouldnt match up to the JDM 6 speed plug and I cant seem to find any info on it out there

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment and thanks for your question.
      The JDM 6-speed will install the same as the USDM. The speed-o cable is the same, though some of the JDM transmissions have the opposite polarity on the neutral and reverse switches.
      In short, they are just slightly different in certain years. but still very straight forward to use.
      I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your question. You can absolutely do that. The STI 6MT will bolt up to any EJ20 block, so there really are no limitations from using a 2.0 liter block. All of this video and our FAQ video would still apply.
      Thanks for watching!

  • @Crazyced
    @Crazyced 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One correction: male WRX axles won't properly fit an early model 6 speed that used to have axle stubs. The sun gears and seals from a stubless 6 speed need to be swapped.

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for that point. Yes, if your 6MT has stubs, then you need the male to female axles to work with the transmission. Since we focus on the 2007 STI transmission, this is not an issue, but if you are getting an early JDM transmission, you could run into this.

      @FlatironsTuning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. It sounds like you got a JDM transmission that has the reverse polarity for the neutral safety switch.

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. No, your R160 wouldn't work because it is the wrong ratio.
      I'd actually recommend against putting in an STI transmission unless you have installed a turbo engine. The reason is that the gears are all going to be taller. 6th for instance is much taller than your current 5th, and you will not be able to make use of it very much because your engine just doesn't make enough torque.

    I have a question, I have a 2004 Wrx wagon and I’m planning on a 6 speed swap, I got my hands on a 06 sti trans, I was wondering if I wanted to use my 5 speed flywheel and clutch (since I recently upgraded) which clutch fork would I use the 5speed or 6speed (I have both) and also I was going to pair it with my stock Wrx rear diff and an auto drive shaft. Will that setup work?

      Thanks for your question. The first thing I would say is that you would most likely want to install a DCCD controller. Beyond that, yes, the R160 is reliable up to about 400 whp. Beyond that, the R180 is a better platform, and if you are launching the car the R180 is a safer bet as well.

    So I’m still a bit new with my 02wrx
    It’s the 4EAT
    Since as of a month ago I damaged both my front and read diff
    I was told to either buy new diff front and back for the AT for 2k or spend 6-9k and do the whole sti swap since the sti had bigger hubs and almost everything was different
    So while I’m still trying to decide what I’m gonna do with the car Ik a person who is parting out their sti and is offering the 04 trans with diff, axels, drive shaft and shifter linkage
    Would I still have to change the 5x100 hubs and calipers and my rear diff?

    I’ve been reading and watching your videos a lot lately, and I came across some info that you may be able to fit the rear 2 pot wrx calipers to the r180 rear hubs if you just use the group “n” or gravel spec rotors, they have a 190mm handbrake and 290mm o/d, and if you get the early 04 sti with the 5x100 stud pattern, the calipers use the same bolt spacing as well, so I’m lead to believe... can you shed any light on this? @@dustinpeters8609 Okay. If you have a wagon, then the Sedan/STI lower control arms will be about 10mm wider on each side. This can make wheel and tire fitment more tricky on the wagon, so you may want to keep your WRX wagon suspension. But if you want to run STI axles etc., then yes, you would need to swap them out.

    Another awesome video! Thanks so much for keeping the GD chassis relevant. I do have some confusion about the REAR track width. Supposing full shabang swap, all STI hubs, brembos, and R180. All the WRX's have left/right rear axles but the STI has the same length left and right. The WRX rear axles are shorter on the driver's side due to the R160 being offset. How are the STI's axles the same? Is the R180 not offset? Do I need the STI rear subframe to center the R180? Thanks again!

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your question. Some of the GC cars had different length rear axles, but the GD does not. We just ran into this on our Rally car. You will see left and right listed, but they are the same part number.
      Long story short, if you are putting in an R180, you would need conversion axles to keep your WRX hubs. But if you are using a complete STI driveline including hubs and axles, you just move all of those components over, and you will be good to go.
      Hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your question. The short answer is yes. Both would come with some pretty big hurdles. Converting from an Auto to manual is no simple task because you have to weld in a new pedal box and all that entails.
      Putting a 6 cylinder engine where there was only an 4 cylinder is also not an easy process. And if you are wanting to turbo it in addition, that will be a very involved process too.
      I guess a starting point would be how willing you are to run a stand-alone ECU. If you were planning on that all ready, you may have an easier time starting out with a MT car since the bulk of your work will be wiring, etc.
      If you are comfortable with fab work, and you are on the fence about turboing the engine, then maybe start with the 6-cylinder.

    • @FlatironsTuning

      Thanks for the question, but I honestly think that the answer is no. Because the turbo Subaru's make a lot more power than the NA cars, the gearing in the STI trans is much taller. In other words, you would be adding a gear, but most likely you wouldn't be able to use it, and with the taller gears, you would likely have to use a lot more throttle to keep the car moving the rest of the time as well.

    I have one question regarding the 6sp swap into GD WRX. Do we not have to swap the trans crossmember for the sti transmission? Will it fit on the WRX crossmember? I have an 04 FXT that I am currently running 02 wrx drivetrain on, except the FXT driveshaft. I just blew the wrx trans and I will be putting an 04 STI trans in. I am looking to use the wrx axles and I have an R160 3.90 rear diff from an impreza to match the trans.

    Hello, would it be difficult or possible to swap my 4eat 2005 wrx (sedan, 2.0L ej205 usda) into a 6mt STi? I'm guessing these videos will apply, with the exception of mine being a 4eat.

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. Yes, swapping out the pedal box is required for this, and is a lot of work. And depending on the ECU, there can be some things that need to be done there to get the car to run properly. I believe with an 05 4EAT, you can ground one of the pins to get the car to run properly with a manual transmission, but I'm not 100% sure.
      It can be done, but it isn't easy.

    So if I had an STi transmission with no axle stubs and I wanted to put it into my '02 GD WRX, I could use '04-'05 WRX axles that have the male/male connections? Or do the '04-'05 WRX axles not have the same spline counts as the '02-'03 hubs/axles? So I would have to get the kit you guys sell without a doubt?
    Also I've found a couple STi transmissions, some JDM from different years and models than 06-07 USDM STi's. But they're always no-stubs with a 3.9 front diff, and a 1.1:1 transfer gear ratio to accept the GD WRX's 3.54 rear diff - I would assume that the kits would accept most of these earlier 6-speeds?

    • @FlatironsTuning

    I know a lot of Subaru parts are interchangeable, I was concerned about a crunching noise in the trans when going into 4th, mechanic said gearbox will blow in about a year. When the time comes I wanna do an sti trans swap, is this possible? And am I able to just bolt on the gearbox and nothing else e.g. clutch, flywheel, driveshaft etc? • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question Sam. The short answer is that yes, you can do an STI transmission swap in an Impreza, but you will need much more than the transmission itself. Your swap is very similar to the GD talked about here. I'd also recommend going through the FAQ video because it talkes about rear differentials. Your Impreza diff will not work with an STI transmission, so you would have to address that too.

    I'm about to bite the bullet and do the jdm 2003 sti trans swap with the plated rear diff and suretrac front diff for a street car/track day setup for my 2006 wrx.
    will i regret not going with the hellical front diff in the 2006 sti setup? need a stronger setup and hoping its gonna be worth it and not noticeably bad on understeer ?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks for your question. The AP Suretrac is still in the category of a torque biasing differential. It has a slightly different behaviour in slick conditions than a gear type TBD, but if you have one wheel on ice, it will still behave as an open diff.
      Up front, there is nothing wrong with this at all up to about 400 whp or more. If you find that you start spinning a front wheel coming out of a corner, that is where you would want to look at a clutch type diff.
      Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

    I have a 2002 wrx 4eat, what would be the process of getting myself into a 6 speed?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. That is a very involved swap. You have a big task ahead because you don't have a clutch pedal, a pedal box to hold it, or any of the holes that you would need to run the clutch through the fire wall. It is possible, but it is a large amount of work. It may well be easier to find a MT car to do the swap than try to convert from the auto.
      Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
