Its unfortunate that americans choose to call their game football seeing as the rest of the world call soccer football but thats just one of those oddities. The fact remains this is the best that the sport of RUGBY has to offer: it includes both CODES of the game. Your analogy doesn't work because they're two entirely different sports.

Union is more commonly played than league and has better publicity, so when referring to union, people usually generalise and just say rugby. rugby came first. football came after and we are pretty much the only country that plays it. ive played both and rugby is harder
