- Warning, this video does contain spoilers! I completed the game with just Diddy Kong, and it was incredibly fun to do it with him. =] I was happy to see that Diddy does indeed have his own version of the ending, however, you of course have to beat the boss with Diddy to see it.

For everyone still curious as to how you get this ending (or even just how to play as Diddy alone), it is quite simple. 2-Player Co-op > Kill Donkey Kong > use player 2's controller to control Diddy.

So diddy Kong can land his head on the moon pretty hard and beat it out of orbit pretty much like Donkey Kong punching a moon out of orbit. So these Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are really strong to punch the moon out of it's orbit.

Yet these two somehow manage to get captured in the original donkey kong country trilogy.
I think the ending highlights the absurdity of it all. There's a wink-and-a-nod to the way the moon drops as if to say "please just laugh with us and try not to take any logic here seriously" and I got a kick out of it.
The ending is so adorable with Donkey catching him in his arms.

It’s weird how you can’t play as Diddy Kong without using the co-op mode, but Nintendo went through the trouble of making alternate versions of the final cutscenes as if you could.

Diddy head alone can exert over 3000 MT (Megatons) making him a planet level threat. However this was on accident so he could be potentially solar system level if his true power is shown. I mean he can move in a space, breathe in space, and travel back to earth in seconds.

Wish this final boss would include vine climbing/swinging, ground pounding, roll attacks to damage. Would've made it epic. Oh that this thing can also regenerate its hands if the other took too long to get destroyed.
I 100% completed this game, even on Hard Mode, and I never knew about this.

You know what would’ve made this boss harder? If he would ball his fist and swing across the screen, one high enough to duck and one low enough to jump over. The speeds would be random, sometimes being slow and sometimes being fast.
The boss is a remade Andross from Star Fox 64 and Zero as well as Wham Bam Rock/Jewel from Kirby Super Star (Ultra)

You learn the answer in "Feathered Fiend". They need the bananas in order to mass-produce their Tiki army and eventually take over the world (or DK's Island, at least).

And I agree. I wish they would flesh out relationships a bit better in general. A good example is Diddy and Dixie. They’re supposed to be a couple, but they don’t really, y’know, DO anything. Hold hands, be protective of each other, be seen on a date before something bad happens. Anything! Also, DK and Cranky. They should seriously clear up if Cranky is DK’s father or grandfather. He’s been called both before. lol
Oh, thank heaven, I thought I was the only one left on the planet who actually wanted to see characterization and story in a Donkey Kong game.
A little-known fact about Diddy and Dixie is that a lot of the promo art for DKC2 featured them holding hands. That's not enough, but it is something. I think the things you've suggested would go a long way towards demonstrating their affection for one another, and they'd be absolutely adorable as well. Honestly, those two might be my favorite Nintendo couple. I always saw their loyalty to one another as defining factors of their relationship. Case in point, the way Dixie speaks to Diddy in the DKC2 instruction manual's story, it's clear that she's worried about him and isn't about to let him go into danger alone. That's what makes Dixie my favorite Kong character.
And DK and Cranky. So, he's referred to as DK's grandfather in pretty much every game except DK64 [to the best of my recollection], and in that latter game, Cranky just calls him 'son' once or twice. As of Tropical Freeze, Cranky is DK's grandfather again, so I think that's what Nintendo wants us to believe and DK64 is an outlier.
Also... what if Cranky occasionally calls DK 'son' because he raised him? A lot of fans have speculated that Donkey Kong Jr. from the arcade games was DK's father, and since we haven't seen him in such a long time, maybe he died or left and Cranky is the one who actually took care of Donkey Kong? It's not uncommon for a child's grandparents to raise him if the parents can't or won't.
The lore in this universe is richer than most people would believe.
Josiah Schiewe I’m with you there. DK has a lot of untapped potential in terms of lore. There’s a ton of interesting stuff you could delve into just by looking at the environments.
Yeah, I remember that promo art with them holding hands and the other things, but I think they could stand to go further with it. It doesn’t have to be ridiculous lovey-dovey stuff. Just the little things. Mannerisms. The way they treat each other. So on and so forth. I’d say they’re one of my favorite couples in general. Diddy and Dixie were two of my childhood heroes growing up when I still owned a SNES and played DKC2. They are literally equals to me. I don’t like either more than the other. I love ‘em to death.
Ahhh, I never thought of it that way. Yeah, most theories point to DK Jr. as being current DK’s father, and of course Cranky is absolutely DK the First. So Cranky raising current DK and calling him “son” (like “sonny”) makes a lot of sense.
I would honestly prefer it if they DIDN'T do a bunch of ridiculous lovey-dovey stuff. I'm a writer; that's not how you spin a truly good romance. I think Diddy and Dixie are best characterized by simple devotion to one another and the strength to stand together through the tough situations they face. I mean, they're basically either kids or teenagers, and they've been born into what is essentially a constant blood feud between two rival tribes in the jungle. If that is taken in a more realistic light instead of simply as a cartoon, the world of Donkey Kong is actually a pretty dark one. I'd love to see that explored more!
DKC2 is my favorite Donkey Kong game. I didn't have a SNES growing up, but I did play the GBA port sometime in my mid-to-late-teens. Even at that age, which is probably somewhat beyond the intended audience range, I still loved it. Everything about it. The characters, the worlds, the music... oh, heavens, the music... it's pretty much one of the best games I've ever played.
Josiah Schiewe Same. To be honest, I’ll admit I can be a sucker for romance, but in this case, it isn’t necessary. It can be more implied than outright expressed. The most I could see Nintendo doing is maybe a hug, or maybe have them be seen randomly grabbing a bite together before some crisis pops up, urging them to find DK for a new adventure. Something like that. I imagine them as being in their teens at this point, so seeing a strong bond shouldn’t be out of the question here. Problem is Nintendo still acknowledges that they are a couple, but they don’t do anything to show it anymore.
Yeah. DKC2 especially is pretty dark when you consider the context. In that game you are on enemy territory, with peril around every corner. And yeah, it’s still one of my top favorite games of all time. The atmosphere, the challenge, the music, setting, and my favorite pair as the main duo makes it perfect. I wouldn’t mind seeing it remastered, although I would be afraid it might lose some of the magic that makes it so great in the transition to HD.
