My Father rebuilt a castle house in Hollywood. Many of the ceilings were vaulted curved and ornate. He ended up hiring a dear old carpenter friend to help him as he had extensive knowledge in how to construct those ceilings. They were beautiful but probably one of the most complicated and difficult tasks. Along with a stone spiral staircase those were a master builders’ projects. They used rare and precious woods so waste was not an option. I felt privileged to observe and see the finished castle.❤
@@suburbanhomestead I think it depends on what you plan to do with the rest of the house. If you want a cohesive feel aesthetically, I would not do the barrel ceiling unless you plan to keep some design concepts throughout the house to tie it together. Otherwise it will be the odd room.

It's frustrating when people add-on or "renovate" old homes with no regard to the style or time-period of the house, but wow you made that awkward, plain, disjointed room a real jewel!! Also, the barrel ceiling and library ruins are genuis ideas.
I think we have similar mindsets when it comes to intervention within old homes. Ideally, everyone would be mindful when creating spaces. I hope this series helps.
I agree that you are tackling very relatable challenges in your videos. Tearing everything out and building back from scratch is just not feasible for most people. It’s extremely helpful to see someone work with what they have to transform a room.
If you own the home and plan to be there for a while, add the barrel ceiling and library ruins if it's more than a notion and something that you want to invest the time and effort in for the end result. There is nothing like curling up under a throw with a good book and a cup of tea or hot chocolate in a room that's cozy and you can just "be". Yes, it will be a lot of work and only you know if it's worth it. If you decide to go for it, LET US SEE 🙂!
I don't know why this popped up on my feed but I'm so glad it did. You've turned an awkward space into one of the loveliest rooms I've seen. The finish on the shelves is perfect and all the curios and art work make it a wonderful sanctuary and cosy space to linger in. I would leave the upper shelf as it is, without the plaster frieze. Maybe make one or two pieces but leave room for a mix of other things. Very inspiring, I'd love to see more of your home
When he started wallpapering the wall with pages of a dictionary, you had to hoover my jaw off the floor! This was no run of the mill home reno video with all ikea pieces, but truly a work of art and passion. Even the video style, narration and editing are all wonderfully engaging. Hoping you do more interior/construction videos or even art projects, for instance, I absolutely *need* a video on that gorgeous canvas tapestry that you conjured out of nowhere and called a rug! I loved your original idea for above the shelving but I really like what you've done with it by putting all the interesting collections you have. Perhaps you can make a little book nook out of your original plan and put it on one of those shelves.
That's perfect I never really cared for the open floor plans that everybody got into. I'm hearing now that people are going back to having more individual rooms in their house. Let's face it there's times we need to separate and be alone.
I feel that the pandemic made people realize the necessity for divided room, especially since the whole point of open floor was entertaining large groups.

My parents loved books and when they bought their first home in 1971, they made the dining room into a library. It made the typical suburban home something unique and I always loved that room.

Yes actually "building!" The thing is, unless you or a family member who doesn't mind can do this, the cost for that build would be beyond most people's budgets.

When you talked about limiting construction waste, it made my heart smile. Three mornings a week I help remove trash at illegal dumpsites across my county, so much of it is discarded building materials! Two things: the window at night is like a black negative, I think a red blind or woven tapestry like fabric in a Roman shade, would add warmth and be less jarring to the space. Two: I think that the curtains to the closet are fabulous because they create an air of mystery as to what they might be hiding. Your bookshelves are a masterpiece of elegance and thrift. The dictionary wallpaper adds just the right touch of whimsy. The selection and arrangement of the “bits and bobs”? C’est Magnifique!👏👏👏👏
As a rabid bibliophile with hundreds and hundreds of non fiction books, I was delighted when your TH-cam channel with Extreme Room Makeover - My closet is now a library!, popped up in my feed today. You are a kindred spirit in so many ways. Have spent time looking at your channel. Really liked your 9 GARDENING HACKS That Actually Work. In winter here in the California SIerra we cover all our fall/winter vegetables (rutabaga, turnip, parsnips, carrots, leeks, kale, spinach, cabbages) with three feet of straw, which acts to insulate and keep them from freezing, while allowing us to harvest. In fall when our heirloom tomatoes die back, we gently lay the plants over onto the soil and cover with straw and compost. Come spring they send up new growth, stronger plants. This saves us money and produces more heirloom tomato plants which we share with family, friends.
I've never come across your channel before, but this was recommended to me and I'm so glad it was! I absolutely adored this video and the vibes of your library. It really reminds me of my favourite spaces in Oxford - not just the libraries, which were obviously gorgeous, but especially all the different studies of my history professors. They were always bursting with books and fascinating antiques and curiosities they'd collected over decades. The furniture was always slightly dilapidated but gorgeous, the colour palettes were usually warm and autumnal, and they were always like beautiful little jewel boxes, just intoxicatingly lovely. It was sometimes hard to focus on my tutorials because I'd get so distracted looking at the pretty things! Anyway, your library hits all the sweet spots and I love it. I think the barrel ceiling would be very cool. And you have a new subscriber:)
I know I'm late to this, but...do the arched ceiling with moldings, that will be stunning. I love the idea of the library ruins frieze, but it will be pretty tricky to clean/dust, so just keep that in mind.

When I was young, growing up in my parents' house I remember always dreaming about how I wanted to make an old-fashioned library room in my own house one day. Yours is divine! I would encourage a curved or vaulted ceiling at some point in the future if you feel accomplished enough in your design skills to pull it off. Even though the room is small, It would be awesome! Even adding some painted frescos on the ceiling would make it exceptional - not necessarily trying do a miniature replica of a chapel, but to add a bookish, knowledge and learning atmosphere.

This is the first video of yours I've watched and it was fantastic. I'd love to see more! I'm guessing your whole house has these vibes, i.e. the bedroom sneak peak at 18:25. Wowed by that painted canvas rug you casually mention. Impressed by the design animations. Please make more room tours, DIY, and interior design videos! The frieze idea looks incredibly tedious to me, and the objects you're displaying now look cool as-is.
I'd love to see more interior design/transformation videos like this. I think the plaster broken library and barrel ceiling might make the room feel overwhelming. With the large collection of books and objects, I think the room has a good balance between large collection and not appearing too busy, but I think adding a big feature like that would be competing too much for people's attention.
Thanks! I am very happy with its current state. My mind is just a bit excessive at times. That being said I’m still partial to the barrel ceiling but it probably needed a bigger room to really work.

Keep the barrel ceiling idea for a larger room in the future. As for the floor I really think a muted painted canvas floor is the way to go. Please seriously consider doing this. ( : I would love to see this in this room in the future. It would be a good move to prevent carpet dust mites that might aggravate your asthma. This is the first time I ever saw any of your videos. You are definitely a very creative person. I appreciate you taking us thru the step by step process in the creation of the library.

I think that is the most sensible way of tackling it. I probably have to first focus and everything else in the house, since it seems to be OK at this point as it is, but as you can gather, I am tempted to embark on a project with lots of intricate elements.
I would certainly like to see more videos like these on your channel. The times you show the inside of your house have illustrated how purposeful and creative you are inside, just as you are outside. I too have an older home (1920s) and work to create it a unique space. This video gave me a ton of new ideas for parts of my house.
This is such a wonderful, clever transformation. I love that you emphasized and explained the vital importance of proportions. Regardless of the nuances of personal style, a space feels pleasing and harmonious with good proportions, and I think most people intuitively respond to that. My two cents on the back-burnered projects: as amazing as the frieze ideas is (what detail!!) , I wonder if it would be a bit top heavy in that space, but a barrel ceiling would seem to make the space visually soar upward (space for dreams 🙂).
keep up with the videos. Craftmanship is disappearing. these videos are inspiring to the younger generation. Videos such as these have helped my grand daughter decide she would like a career in woodworking, restoration construction and design.

You are a genius I had not thought about creating book ends with them. I’d have to see if they would be perhaps too heavy for shipping and fragile but it’s still a nice idea. I’m glad you pick up on some of the ethics of creating with a light footprint and intentionality I think the human spirit suffers if creativity is not seen as essential.

Your library reminds me of the cabinet of wonders in the novel “Wonderstruck”. Quirky and so fascinating! I think it will change organically over time with new treasures and books. What keeps me coming back to your channel is your ability to create and elevate using many found and repurposed pieces. In my home I take pride in using things that have been handed down to me because I love the sense of history and the stories each piece tells over time. Other pieces I have are from thrift shops, flea markets, and estate sales. These are my favorites!

I love the woodworking techniques that you used to build the shelves. I especially loved how you cut the edges of some of the shelves to tie into the doorways-very beautiful. I have plans to transform an unused bedroom into a library-apothecary. This is going in my diy save list for ideas. The best part for me was designing the bookcases with the added on edging. It really adds an extra flare you don't see in standard modules. I also liked your symmetry perspective, it really makes the room flow better.

While I loved the concept of the frieze, what you ended up doing with all the curated curiosities just suits the space so well. Personally, I adore what you’ve created here. Well done!! 🎉🎉🎉
I love love love what you did with that space. I have a similar room but it's a bit larger (8X10). It has one closet with 2 sliding doors but it would still work. The depth of the closet is very shallow so I could remove the doors and curtain off the bottom half and add shelves on the inside of the closet on the top half. The curtain on the bottom could be used to conceal seldom-used/seasonal objects. I could also do what you did with the lower shelf; and at 30" high, could turn that double closet into an office nook. The curtained space below would allow room for "knee space" while sitting there, especially if I used two panels that could be pushed to each side. I wanted so badly to place a kerosene lamp and/or a pair of brass candle holders onto one of your shelves, and maybe a lap throw on the arm of your rocker. 🙂 I have subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to enjoying your other videos. I agree that you are tackling very relatable challenges in your videos. Tearing everything out and building back from scratch is just not feasible for most people. It’s extremely helpful to see someone work with what they have to transform a room.
If you own the home and plan to be there for a while, add the barrel ceiling and library ruins if it's more than a notion and something that you want to invest the time and effort in for the end result. There is nothing like curling up under a throw with a good book and a cup of tea or hot chocolate in a room that's cozy and you can just "be". Yes, it will be a lot of work and only you know if it's worth it. If you decide to go for it, LET US SEE 🙂!

I don't know why this popped up on my feed but I'm so glad it did. You've turned an awkward space into one of the loveliest rooms I've seen. The finish on the shelves is perfect and all the curios and art work make it a wonderful sanctuary and cosy space to linger in. I would leave the upper shelf as it is, without the plaster frieze. Maybe make one or two pieces but leave room for a mix of other things. Very inspiring, I'd love to see more of your home

This was no run of the mill home reno video with all ikea pieces, but truly a work of art and passion. Even the video style, narration and editing are all wonderfully engaging. Hoping you do more interior/construction videos or even art projects, for instance, I absolutely *need* a video on that gorgeous canvas tapestry that you conjured out of nowhere and called a rug! That's perfect I never really cared for the open floor plans that everybody got into. I'm hearing now that people are going back to having more individual rooms in their house. Let's face it there's times we need to separate and be alone.
I feel that the pandemic made people realize the necessity for divided room, especially since the whole point of open floor was entertaining large groups.
I never did either. Maybe I'm part Hobbit, but I love the little corners of my house to look like a comforting place to escape.

Yes actually "building!" The thing is, unless you or a family member who doesn't mind can do this, the cost for that build would be beyond most people's budgets.

Two things: the window at night is like a black negative, I think a red blind or woven tapestry like fabric in a Roman shade, would add warmth and be less jarring to the space. Two: I think that the curtains to the closet are fabulous because they create an air of mystery as to what they might be hiding. Your bookshelves are a masterpiece of elegance and thrift. The dictionary wallpaper adds just the right touch of whimsy. The selection and arrangement of the “bits and bobs”? C’est Magnifique!👏👏👏👏

In winter here in the California SIerra we cover all our fall/winter vegetables (rutabaga, turnip, parsnips, carrots, leeks, kale, spinach, cabbages) with three feet of straw, which acts to insulate and keep them from freezing, while allowing us to harvest.
In fall when our heirloom tomatoes die back, we gently lay the plants over onto the soil and cover with straw and compost. Come spring they send up new growth, stronger plants. This saves us money and produces more heirloom tomato plants which we share with family, friends.
I've never come across your channel before, but this was recommended to me and I'm so glad it was! I absolutely adored this video and the vibes of your library. It really reminds me of my favourite spaces in Oxford - not just the libraries, which were obviously gorgeous, but especially all the different studies of my history professors. They were always bursting with books and fascinating antiques and curiosities they'd collected over decades. The furniture was always slightly dilapidated but gorgeous, the colour palettes were usually warm and autumnal, and they were always like beautiful little jewel boxes, just intoxicatingly lovely. It was sometimes hard to focus on my tutorials because I'd get so distracted looking at the pretty things!
Anyway, your library hits all the sweet spots and I love it. I think the barrel ceiling would be very cool. And you have a new subscriber:)
I know I'm late to this, but...do the arched ceiling with moldings, that will be stunning. I love the idea of the library ruins frieze, but it will be pretty tricky to clean/dust, so just keep that in mind.

When I was young, growing up in my parents' house I remember always dreaming about how I wanted to make an old-fashioned library room in my own house one day. Yours is divine! I would encourage a curved or vaulted ceiling at some point in the future if you feel accomplished enough in your design skills to pull it off. Even though the room is small, It would be awesome! Even adding some painted frescos on the ceiling would make it exceptional - not necessarily trying do a miniature replica of a chapel, but to add a bookish, knowledge and learning atmosphere.
I completely agree on the frescos on the ceiling. The barreled ceiling seems to be the most popular item to add. May your imagination continue to guide you

This is the first video of yours I've watched and it was fantastic. I'd love to see more! I'm guessing your whole house has these vibes, i.e. the bedroom sneak peak at 18:25. Wowed by that painted canvas rug you casually mention. Impressed by the design animations. Please make more room tours, DIY, and interior design videos! The frieze idea looks incredibly tedious to me, and the objects you're displaying now look cool as-is.

I think the plaster broken library and barrel ceiling might make the room feel overwhelming. With the large collection of books and objects, I think the room has a good balance between large collection and not appearing too busy, but I think adding a big feature like that would be competing too much for people's attention.
Thanks! I am very happy with its current state. My mind is just a bit excessive at times. That being said I’m still partial to the barrel ceiling but it probably needed a bigger room to really work.

Keep the barrel ceiling idea for a larger room in the future. As for the floor I really think a muted painted canvas floor is the way to go. Please seriously consider doing this. ( : I would love to see this in this room in the future. It would be a good move to prevent carpet dust mites that might aggravate your asthma. This is the first time I ever saw any of your videos. You are definitely a very creative person. I appreciate you taking us thru the step by step process in the creation of the library.

I think that is the most sensible way of tackling it. I probably have to first focus and everything else in the house, since it seems to be OK at this point as it is, but as you can gather, I am tempted to embark on a project with lots of intricate elements.

I would certainly like to see more videos like these on your channel. The times you show the inside of your house have illustrated how purposeful and creative you are inside, just as you are outside. I too have an older home (1920s) and work to create it a unique space. This video gave me a ton of new ideas for parts of my house.
This is such a wonderful, clever transformation. I love that you emphasized and explained the vital importance of proportions. Regardless of the nuances of personal style, a space feels pleasing and harmonious with good proportions, and I think most people intuitively respond to that. My two cents on the back-burnered projects: as amazing as the frieze ideas is (what detail!!) , I wonder if it would be a bit top heavy in that space, but a barrel ceiling would seem to make the space visually soar upward (space for dreams 🙂).

You are a genius I had not thought about creating book ends with them. I’d have to see if they would be perhaps too heavy for shipping and fragile but it’s still a nice idea. I’m glad you pick up on some of the ethics of creating with a light footprint and intentionality I think the human spirit suffers if creativity is not seen as essential.

Your library reminds me of the cabinet of wonders in the novel “Wonderstruck”. Quirky and so fascinating! I think it will change organically over time with new treasures and books. What keeps me coming back to your channel is your ability to create and elevate using many found and repurposed pieces. In my home I take pride in using things that have been handed down to me because I love the sense of history and the stories each piece tells over time. Other pieces I have are from thrift shops, flea markets, and estate sales. These are my favorites!

I have plans to transform an unused bedroom into a library-apothecary. This is going in my diy save list for ideas. The best part for me was designing the bookcases with the added on edging. It really adds an extra flare you don't see in standard modules. I also liked your symmetry perspective, it really makes the room flow better.

I love love love what you did with that space. I have a similar room but it's a bit larger (8X10). It has one closet with 2 sliding doors but it would still work. The depth of the closet is very shallow so I could remove the doors and curtain off the bottom half and add shelves on the inside of the closet on the top half. The curtain on the bottom could be used to conceal seldom-used/seasonal objects. I could also do what you did with the lower shelf; and at 30" high, could turn that double closet into an office nook. The curtained space below would allow room for "knee space" while sitting there, especially if I used two panels that could be pushed to each side. I wanted so badly to place a kerosene lamp and/or a pair of brass candle holders onto one of your shelves, and maybe a lap throw on the arm of your rocker. 🙂 I have subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to enjoying your other videos.
