Pakistan has come up with an innovative new way to go after tax evaders. It has threatened to block the mobile SIM cards of half a million tax defaulters. Pakistan is sent a list to the telecom operators in the country, who have to disconnect the defaulters' SIM cards by the 15th of May. The telecom operators are studying the order, and it may still be challenged in court. But if the new rule gets a legal nod, then it may successfully improve tax collection in Pakistan. The threat has worked in the past, to convince people to get vaccinated during the Covid-19 pandemic. But even if it works, should governments be allowed to weaponise mobile phone connections?

Bad idea because defaulters whose SIM will be blocked will use SIM registered in the name of their spouse or childrens who are not tax payers at all

all sims were connected with the computerised national identity (cnic) cards in 2012. the those who didn't, their sims were all blocked. All sims in the entire country is now connected with cnic.
Actually this seems to be a good move because it won't really affect a normal person as they will simply go and buy a new sim card which is pretty cheap in Pakistan. The wealthier ones will get affected because 1. They buy special sims with special numbers for a very high price and 2. Their one main number is really important to them as most of the people they deal with only have that one specific number, loosing it will affect their businesses.

I think this is a good idea. India should do this, too. All citizens must pay their due taxes on time, every time.
The idea should be a 'constant' reminder to the tax defaulter - even if they have purchased the SIM in one of their family member's names, but this will become embarrassing eventually pushing many to clearing their bills at some point.
Honestly, except for husband/wife/kids most other family members don't help.
If the extended family does help, then they will at some point remind (embarrass) you about you defaulting on taxes because their needs can change in the future, and they don't want to be responsible if you do something wrong.
Pakistan has adopted unorthodox methods for recovering money. When Musharraf displaced Nawaz Sharif, he sent soldiers to the places of defaulters of bank loans for forcing them to pay their debts. In Pakistan only such coercive methods work. If even half the taxpayers pay their taxes promptly, Pakistan wouldn’t have to run around with their begging bowl to China, imf or Saudi Arabia.

60% of Pakistan's economy is undocumented, it's a good move to increase tax collection as Sim cards get only registered with ID cards. If one refuses to pay taxes he'll never be able to have a sim or broadband internet connection. Pakistan's NADRA is digitalised so its easy for the govt to identify defaulters

@@PreMal2023 and that is exactly why Pakistan needs IMF to help reform Pakistan's economy, we don't need 3B$, Pakistan already earns 100B$ per year from exports and remmitences. Entire real estate and agriculture economy in Pakistan is untaxed including agriculture related industries.
