  • Why People No Longer Read Books | Between the Lines with Palki Sharma
Gone are the days when people sought refuge in libraries, engaging in the age-old pastime of reading books. Now, our noses are assaulted by the sterile aroma of freshly manufactured gadgets, emitting a dull blue light that promises everything and delivers, well, mostly cat videos.
As social media consumes most of our days, books have taken a backseat across the globe with many not even reading a single book in a year. So is reading dead? Palki Sharma tells you on Between the Lines.

I would like to get a content from you on the trend of Indians choosing non-IT job oriented studies. We know even if students choose electronics or mechanical still work on IT. But the data that you present should show the overall trend with Indians choosing the stream of work. This will give us a view to us where Indians will be and how many markets can Indians penetrate into out of IT itself. I know you can add versatile sides to this ask and present even more good informative content. 🙂✌

I LOVE BOOKS . BOOKS ARE THE SOUL OF LIFE
The FATTER the fiction/ non fiction book ,the more i love to read it .I have once walked out of a bad movie in the interval and sat and finished a wheel of time series book in the lobby :) . My mother is the one who used to give me books instead of toys to play with
      a) Retail stores price books ridiculously high so pricing is an issue .Libraries r needed
b)Schools& parents & ADHD in folks have contributed to this situation

There's no better way to learn, evolve and relax than reading books. Please don't give it up guys. Even 10 min daily of uninterrupted reading of a book will add a lot of value. Keep reading!

I think it's because we get bored with social media. If often either feels childish (lots of petty drama, arguments and people being negative about everything), toxic or it's just the same things over and over and as we get older, we want a different experience. Books tells different stories that we can really get into or even get us thinking or using our imaginations once again or maybe just makes us happy and laugh at times. That's my thoughts and experience at least as to why.

I'm proud to say I read on a daily basis and have been doing so for years now. Earlier, access to books was a bit harder since there are no public libraries and the like around me, but with the pandemic and online classes, I got my first phone. No looking back. Probably not a single day has gone without reading. Heck I am subscribed to multiple newsletters, it's not just fiction that I read.

Reading ebooks, listening to audiobooks are also best way of sticking to daily learning practice and adapts to current generation. Nowadays children's are more exposed to visual learning through animations to understand concepts even better which was quite hard when reading via books.. preparation through visual learning aids in creativity, better learning and practical understanding which was impossible in the past where school labs are the only ways for better understanding. @@achillesglacia7700I somewhat disagree, not completely though. As someone who knows 6 languages, including how to read them at least, a few I can write also, it is not just about expressing oneself. The words can fire one's imagination in ways that is sometimes difficult or different than learning something visually. Giving a small example here. Read a book and then watch a movie. Seldom the movie lives upto your imagination. Also words, when read, can mean something else entirely to one person than it would to another when not expressed vocally/without emotion. We interpret the emotions and meaning for ourselves.
This by no means discredits visual learning. Both have their pros and cons.

As an English teacher, I strongly recommend that young and inexperienced readers begin with short graded readers such as the Oxford Bookworm Series. These graded readers are intended for second language students and contain many pictures to accompany the texts. The readers are arranged in 6 levels (according to level of difficulty in vocabulary and grammatical structures). I have used them for many years in the Middle East with teenagers and young adults. The students I taught in Riyadh loved them and became very avid readers, gradually building their own home libraries. Many of these stories retell famous English classics and modern stories in language accessible to beginner and intermediate level students. Later, the students can progress to the stories in their original form.

you are absolutely right..social media is the real distraction. I also have the notion that people are not reading books nowadays, however every year book sales are going up now a days. I am from Guwahati, Assam and every time there is a book fair in the town, people buy a lot of books and there are lakhs of turnover beating previous records (I am speaking about official records). Now Iam confused as these facts are contradicting each other.

Just would like to Share as a teacher, that still my students ask for physical Copies of notes for preparing for Exams, even though they are provided with digital notes.
    My conclusion:
1.Visuals help in faster understanding, but
    2. books provide that stability required to store that knowledge and reproduce.
    3. May be books might be helping them to imagine and produce their own visuals which lasts longer inb their memories.

It's shocking to know that book market is plummeting globally. I love reading books and from pandemic my interest in geopolitics has increased and now I prefer to buy books related to geopolitics. I used to read novels and books related to personal development. Thanks palki mam and entire team for raising this issue. I will encourage my friends and family to buy books and enjoy reading rather than engaging in this social media menace.

I have a collection of more than 3000 books on various genres. Some of them are first publications as well. Reading is indeed a pleasure and collecting / procuring the old ones are absolutely gratifying. Restoring them is even more an enjoyable experience. Hope awareness prevail to get the crowd back on track especially the younger generations.

Hi Palki. I really appreciate how you and your team come up with such a good idea, collect all the relevant details and present them so nicely. I have been a regular follower for Vantage and Between the lines. I enjoy these shows. Further, at this platform I want to raise an important issue of using personal whatsapp at workplace these days. Actually, One of my dear friend and many others person working in corporate sectors are suffering from this disease. I am calling this it a disease, because, using whatsapp should actually be a personal choice, however it is mainly being hijacked these days for corporate use without our choice. If we don't use or stop using whatsapp these days, our bosses / management call it an intention of not being the part of business growth. But, it;s actually not true. Moreover, there are many side effects of this technology, which is impacting our personal life and health as well. I think use of whatsapp should be regulated for business purpose. It raises employers expectations to seek response from employee anytime. Company's may employ corporate any instant messaging application only at the work place with in defined worktime. Hijacking personal whatsapp, should be banned. I think you may make one video on this, or on a similar broader issue.

All we need is a good old book. So true! I am currently reading Mailbu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This beautiful book is about family and it shows you how family can be the people that love you more than anything else in the world but also the ones that cause you the most amount of heartbreak. The fact that the entire storyline of this book takes place throughout one single night but you're still able to dive in and know so much about every individual character is a reading experience of its own.
