Thanks for another informative video. I have tried to make my own leads but struggled to get the lead hot enough to pour with a camping stove so just ordered a more powerful stove. But now thinking that maybe I am using the wrong type of pan - is there a preferred type to use ? Many thanks for all the videos you do, very helpful to a newbie like me. Tight lines.

      Hey Robert how are you?
So first thing I would do is check the gas is burning right, sometimes the canister gets cold and starts off burning right only to die down to next to nothing without you realising! Most gas stoves will head lead up pretty quickly to be honest.
Pan wise i just use an old saucepan I got from the tip and then I use a ladle to pour the molten lead into the moulds otherwise you run the risk of the handle snapping on the pan which was highlighted to me by a mate and makes sense!

Great video Ben.. When I melt my lead I use an old Dutch oven on a burner. Once the lead is up to temperature and I've skimmed off the junk, I throw in about a quarter of a tea light candle and this helps with the pour and gets rid of the pour lines in the finished product.
One thing I purchased was a bench vice. I had the same clamps as you and had one break as I was pouring a 1lb bell weight..lead went everywhere, fortunately not on me...was the last time I was allowed to make leads in the kitchen 😂. Great video as usual.

Hey mate how are you? Yeah there’s a few things that can be done to improve this process 100% if you wanted to, love the candle wax idea I shall try that one 👋🏻
Appreciate the support as always 🥳💪🏻

Well done ben Great little video hope you don't mind me saying but if you put a little kink in the top of your saucepan to help with the pouring👍

you could use welding sleeves if u dont have long sleeve tops

    • @theamputeeangler
      @theamputeeangler  ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah I don’t have welding sleeves either but unless you’re silly with the pouring it’s not to bad to work with in terms of the heat more just the fumes but again another very valid point thank you!

Hi Ben, as always a good honest video with some useful information in it. I have 5oz and 8oz grip lead moulds which I use for beach and up-tiding also a 1kg bell mould for pretty much all my boat fishing needs as you pour into the bottom of an open mould and can make weights from a few grams to 1kg. What are the uses and advantages of the ball weights?
My top tip if I may, get your gas from home bargains £4.49 for four, almost half the price of amazon, I usually pick up 8 cans as I do all my cooking on the boat with these little camping stoves.

      Hey Brian thanks for watching!
I don’t have a B&M near me so easier to Oder as they arrive next day but yeah they’re fairly easily available if you wanted to save a few quid instore not online 🤙🏻
I prefer ball leads for certain fishing probably more just as a preference thing but i I find they go down abit quicker than certain leads like a watch lead which flutters more so I prefer balls for wrecking and unless you are bait fishing and want the lead to roll the bait about which a ball lead does then there’s no real advantage I don’t think.

I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a th-cam.com/users/postUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.

A pan with a spout is much easier for pouring.

    • @theamputeeangler

Yeah I agree, i hammered one into this one not long after this was filmed, it was a freebie pan from the scrap yard but I also now use a ladle, find that far easier
