A professional unbiased Phone Camera review, FINALLY!!!!!! I PRAY you continue the camera reviews, they're so detailed! :D PS: it's fun to see you interacting with us the viewers :-)
+Sebastien To I feel we can always bring more critique (not just criticism) to reviews, but it's my mission at PN to always back up that critique with evidence. If something is good about a phone camera or bad, I need to be able to show it on video. I have my own personal bias, as any human will, but actually SHOWING pros and cons in fairly consistent tests helps keep me honest :-)
This is by far the best camera review for a phone u have ever seen so far. It's in depth, and in a good variety of real world scenarios. A freaking plus
Yes! Thank you!! Finally a serious review of the camera! I'm tired of hunting information.. watching 40 unboxing and review videos to get a somewhat whole picture of what the camera is like. You MUST keep up with these kind of reviews!! Thumbs up and again, thank you!
also, the fact that you mentioned that the native size is already 16:9 is amazing.. on the S7 you actually get around 8-9MP as opposed to 16MP on the G4 and the G5 if you want the photo to occupy the whole screen.
Thank fucking gods someone actually reviewed the camera in a real way. Literally the number one thing I look for in a phone is quality camera/video. You're the best. Thank you.
Hands down the best G5 camera review on TH-cam :-) Just an update: with the Android Nougat update, the G5 becomes capable of recording HD video with 60fps.
Finally a phone camera with 16:9 resolution. Hate that normal cameras has other ratios, so if you want it to look nice on your pc, you have to reduce the mpixels.
The way you make a mobile review Juan, makes me want to have that phone even though it was not on my mind👍🏼😎 P.s - this is a fantastic phone, just like its review 😊
Great job as always Juan! Also, great that you are able to get so much information into the length of the video, I think that is something most people fail to acknowledge. Can't wait for the camera review of the HTC 10.
JuanBagnell I've got to say in my mind it is Juan Carlos Bagnell > DxOMark in terms of how the camera performs in the real world. So I'll patiently wait for it.
Kwadwo Boadu That's certainly high praise. I think there's a value in sampling review methods from a couple different outlets. DXO is less likely to weigh things like app performance seriously into their rankings as they're a company focused on selling a rigorous scientific analysis. As reviewers we "sell" a consumer perspective on daily life with these gadgets, and by "sell" I mean we hope you'll engage with ads so we can keep the lights on here. More information will always be a good thing, especially for a technical art as subjective as photography.
Fantastic review! It's nice to hear someone who knows the terminology and throw it all together into something that's super useful. Can't wait to see the camera review for the HTC 10
you r only the second guy that was honest about the wide angle camera that when u use it sometimes it makes the pic look distorted great review can't wait till my note 6 comes out
+Lisa Allen I can't understand people that ignore or gloss over that crazy barrel distortion. It doesn't take away that this is still a cool feature, but it's going to curve a lot of shots.
Excellent, the only reason I'm subscribed, great depth and information. Just a great review that I see other tech channels forget that sometimes image quality and shots have to come second to the quality of actual content. Awesome.
Excellent review. Finally someone who actually knows what to look for in the camera. Love the G5's camera setup, but I'm sorely disappointed in the lack of 1080p60, poorly implemented stabilization, slow shutter in video and the lack of any manual controls for the video. Basically, the still shot system is nearly perfect, but the video needs a lot of work. LG could've claimed the crown for best smartphone cam for 2016 with the G5. Too bad the half-baked video recording holds it back.
Good stuff Juan.....very informative and your technical knowledge of photography is high....thoroughly enjoyed it :) as a photographer myself, the geeky details were much appreciated.....even though we miss Michael Fisher, you do a great job Juan! Looking forward to more phone camera reviews from you and the team!!
Huge fan of this specific camera review - personally the camera is the most important factor for me on a phone. Enjoyed the video a lot, please keep them coming! Huawei P9 next? :)
I love how you actually make critical comments in audio and video recording. I hear too many other reviews saying "it's great as you'd expect from a flagship"
+anotheran That bugs the crap out of me too. We DEPEND on phone cameras to capture important moments and memories. There's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all "bestest" camera.
+JuanBagnell agreed. It's like the idea of different lens produce different results from our DSLRs. I like how you bring up barrel distortion too. It's a common criteria in camera reviews but rarely brought up in phone reviews
+Eric L I'm trying to find a happy balance between scientifically rigorous testing and real world scenarios that consumers will care about, but I don't understand the number of people who just ignore things like fringing and aberration. I REALLY like the G5 camera, but at night you KNOW it's going to mess with street lamps...
+JuanBagnell I think it's something difficult for mainstream to understand yet. That happy medium you're talking about will slowly shift as ppl get more techie. I was just checking out some high contrast photos I've taken and spotting the fringing. I think most ppl just label it as blurry or noise or just blame jpeg compression
I really like your camera reviews,i think that this is first time someone mentioned .jpeg and .dng size on android phone. I cant wait to see HTC 10 camera review from you. HTC has one of the best camera flash processing but everything other si so bad optics, processing,WB,dynamic range, etc. Im so locking forward to see what did HTC done to camera this year. nice video, dude, as usual. question: how far can they go with the camera performance ?? every year, phone cameras are gettin better, but do you see a limit, they can reach ?? at one point, are we gonna see radical hardware changes, so they can improve even more the cameras on a phone ?
Superb camera review once again. Was the OIS in the wide angle video better than in the standard video, I have noticed from some samples that it was. Looking forward to seeing how the HTC 10 gets on. Thanks Juan.
+Scott Smith So using the software stabilization, it's smoother thanks to the wider field of view. But I made a mistake in the video (put up an annotation correction) that the wide camera doesn't actually have hardware OIS.
Great, comprehensive camera review in a vid of under 17 min. 😀👍 In a month or two I hope to see side-by-side print comparisons between all the major smartphone flagships. (I'll be very curious to see camera performances from the HTC 10 and, if applicable, Huawei's new Leica shooter on their P9.)
Now THIS is a review! Thanks. Maybe it's just my style of photography, but I like the distortion from the wide angle lens. But then again, on my dslr I use my fisheye a lot of the time.
great review! would love one of those for the Huawei P9/P9 Plus. the dual sensor setup promises low light performance that's better than the Galaxy S7, so it'd be interesting to compare the 2 phone's cameras.
Awesome work, as always! Looking forward to a HTC10 camera review, as well as the P9, though it does not seem to deliver as promised from what I have seen so far.
Once again a fantastic review from pocketnow ..you guys have now raised the bar of camera review which will force other to follow.. this is definitely going to benefit we customers ...can please give your rating(on a scale of 10) for camera' on s7 ,htc 10 and Lg g5. .Also it would great if can include some rating system in your(camera) review so that it makes it much more clear!!
Hey Juan bagnell what kind of headphones are you wearing and how do they function if you don't mind me asking? Thank you and you make real good videos.
@Pocketnow Lg g4 now record 4k at 48mbps after android 6 update, and it even records at 64mbps and 1080p 60fps with manual video mode, using ported V10 camera app, so G4 still rocks
I trust you Juan.lol Holding on to my V10 until I pay it off via monthly installments. Not trading this one in. It's late. I'll watch your Galaxy S7 camera review later in the morning.
I am kind of let down by the G5. After the V10 I was in high hopes it would carry over to the G5. That being said this year is the most interesting year so far for camera phones. Cant wait for the P9 review that one seems really interesting
+Adam Mckeithan It's still a really solid camera, but I too am bummed they didn't include more video features, especially since the hardware is more powerful. SUPER curious to see what Huawei and Leica have produced. Hoping we can get one soon-ish.
Great review Juan! Very impressed with the G5's cameras. My money still went with the S7 but I think the next iteration of the G could finally persuade me to move over to LG if they refine this phone like Samsung did with the S6/S7.
+GeorgeGringo21 It's a great track for them to be on. I was lukewarm on the GS6, and I feel better about the S7. I think that kind of refinement here would be welcome.
+Mukhlis Rohaizak Moving forward we're probably only going to be covering new phones. Next on the schedule is the HTC 10. Then later in the year we'll try and do some more shootouts.
Nice review! Subscribed! :) One question, can the OIS be turned off for video? That jello distortion is the only thing that troubles me. And awaiting the same for HTC 10 camera.
Awesome review as usual, i think that the difference in the glass between both lenses is a bit surprising, i mean, the tunnel light shot with the distortion was a bit weird. I wish they could allow you to download the camera app of the V10 to this. Overall i think it is a more flexible and better option than others, but not everything including the v10. The noise and the over exposure on the night video is just.... Smh, that should not be a thing on a f 1.8 lens, it is toooo noisy.
JuanBagnell it makes me sadder to see the noisy low light video, because none of them looked clean, even the pics looked cleaner and overexposed, yet the video was a sandfest.
Nice like the look and been wanting to replace my old set which just died on me 😢. Thanks for the quick reply. Alot of reviewers arent as engaged with the viewers. Those megapickels rock!!
Terrific camera review, even by dedicated camera review standards! I won't buy this phone, but this is a great reference resource. Very impressive camera too it seems.
Hey Mr. +JuanBagnell , yr camera reviews are always better than most and makes me happy. So as usual nice review. But I have a few recommendations for yr next one if that's HTC 10 (which I am expecting as that is the phone everyone is curious about now-a-days). So here they are: 1. No 1 concern for me is whether 10 supports 30 sec shot or not. What I saw in the videos, the highest limit is 2 sec which is a shame IMO. Dedicated smartphone photographers like me surely expect more than 2 sec. So if not out of the box it supports 30 sec, please try with some 3rd party app like "proshot" and see if this is possible. 2. My 2nd concern is HTC 10 shows notification if the laser focus is blocked. Now LG G4 also has laser focus, but it never does so. Even in laser focus blocked, G4 can focus correctly, maybe using phase detection. So please see if that's possible with HTC 10. This is crucial because u see now-a-days lots of cool accessories are in the market e.g. Beastgrip and I, among of many, use them for my photography and that, for obvious reason, blocks the flash and laser focus. But these accessories are crucial for many situations. 3. Finally the raw images. Please compare the raw images of LG G4/G5 and HTC 10 in respect of how much detail u can gain from the shadows n highlights as well as how much colour it retains. Thanks for reading my post and I will be highly delighted if u include these in your next video. Btw this is my smartphone photography gallery: 500px.com/drnipun487/galleries/lg-g4-photography . Check it out if u get some time. Thanks again. Looking forward to yr video.
+Nipun Hazra Great ideas. For the main camera review we probably won't be doing a lot of comparing, but I am planning a few camera showdowns between G5, GS7, and HTC 10. I'll check your gallery out :-)
japanluv Thanks man... Thanks a lot for managing your time to check my gallery... I am hanging in between LG G5 & HTC 10. Only thing that is pulling me to LG G5 is 16:9 sensor, full 30 sec s/s and that wide angle lens. Otherwise noone can beat the build quality and development support of HTC. Plus that camera is being praised by everyone. I wish HTC would at least give full 30 sec long exposure capability.
+Nipun Hazra I had HTC as my first smartphone which was an xda something called, after that Samsung all the way until now. Had to renew the contract and had a good deal on G5 that I couldnt refuse so I thought to leave Samsung for a while. I wanted try newer HTC and Sony but somehow I stayed with Samsung up until now.Any camera app would you recommend for more video control like 24p mode? Checked Open Camera earlier after I replied to you but need to play with it.

ive been with the g5 since saturday january 14 and i love the cam
Hands down the best G5 camera review on TH-cam :-) Just an update: with the Android Nougat update, the G5 becomes capable of recording HD video with 60fps.
Love the hard work you guys put on your product. Stay amazing!!

Mind blown Juan... Just what I needed lol great outro BTW
+Jason Booth glad you enjoyed it!

+Anthony Troupe Heh-heh...

Best Camera Deep Dive. Would love to see this for the GS7 and the HTC 10.
Wow, I really enjoy every Video of Juan. very informative and fun to watch :)
Keep up the good work!
+Julian Rabsch Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Did you manually set the settings in Manual mode ? Where is the demos on how to use the different settings and the results of those settings ?
I really like your camera reviews,i think that this is first time someone mentioned .jpeg and .dng size on android phone.
I cant wait to see HTC 10 camera review from you.
HTC has one of the best camera flash processing but everything other si so bad optics, processing,WB,dynamic range, etc.
Im so locking forward to see what did HTC done to camera this year.
Since i cant afford my self new HTC to test camera, now there is someone worth watching.
Best camera reviewer on youtube!!!
+Ognjen Čolić Agreed. VERY interested to see what HTC might have in store for us. They are due a good camera :-)
Looking forward to the HTC 10 Real Camera Review!
+Jehan Kateli Next up on my camera review schedule! Stay tuned :-)
Very nice review! One of the best I've seen
SECOND!
+JuanBagnell Hahahaha
+JuanBagnell Are you a trekkie too? (Odo reference)
please let us know wich camera is better between the G5 and HTC 10 I need the best camera phone with usb type c so s7 is out of the picture
nice video, dude, as usual.
question:
how far can they go with the camera performance ??
every year, phone cameras are gettin better, but do you see a limit, they can reach ??
at one point, are we gonna see radical hardware changes, so they can improve even more the cameras on a phone ?
+John Matthews Yup. Raised on classic Trek and TNG. DS9 was good times too. I can't speak Klingon anymore though...
I'm not a camera or photography buff at all and probably never wil be but I do enjoy these videos, they're very informative.
+Wayne Richter Glad you're digging it. :-)
Excellent review! Keep the camera reviews coming.
Once again, great review!
+Sami Cooper :-)
Man...i really like your work/videos! :)
+Miguel Ferreira Glad you're enjoying the new reviews :-)
all reviews need to be like this. honest and un-bias. thank you!
+Joshua Allen (durron19) You're welcome :-)
Superb camera review once again. Was the OIS in the wide angle video better than in the standard video, I have noticed from some samples that it was. Looking forward to seeing how the HTC 10 gets on. Thanks Juan.
+Scott Smith So using the software stabilization, it's smoother thanks to the wider field of view. But I made a mistake in the video (put up an annotation correction) that the wide camera doesn't actually have hardware OIS.
Great, comprehensive camera review in a vid of under 17 min. 😀👍
In a month or two I hope to see side-by-side print comparisons between all the major smartphone flagships. (I'll be very curious to see camera performances from the HTC 10 and, if applicable, Huawei's new Leica shooter on their P9.)
+Fresh Snow LOL I was a bit edgy about the fact that this camera video was 6 minutes longer than our full review...
Was waiting for this video for a long time. I think I know what phone i'm getting now :)
+Rocket right on :-)
i got the LG g4 and i'm so impressive with his camera!!! the best color and natural reproduction have LG g4 !
+FFsolutions We're REALLY trying to get our hands on a P9. HTC is coming up next! Stay tuned :-)
Thank you for the heads-up, looking forward to the upcoming content! :)
I'm sorry I doubted if you could replace Michael Fisher
I love this "Real Camera Review" series
+russel junior :-)
+JuanBagnell HTC 10 Real Camera Review please😁

Love Juan reviews, i waa looking for this CAMERA REVIEW, i love u juan
+UltraDXSASC dawwww... Blushing over here...
Did you ever revisit this camera after the software upgrades, e.g., the addition of 60fps @ 1080p?
Once again a fantastic review from pocketnow ..you guys have now raised the bar of camera review which will force other to follow.. this is definitely going to benefit we customers ...can please give your rating(on a scale of 10) for camera' on s7 ,htc 10 and Lg g5. .Also it would great if can include some rating system in your(camera) review so that it makes it much more clear!!
Juan pls tell me which is better , S7 or G5 ( for camera performance)
+SENOZA J comparison coming soon. Stay tuned :-)
G5
S7
another awesome review! keep it up JC!
+Hisoka Is My Name :-)
Hey Juan bagnell what kind of headphones are you wearing and how do they function if you don't mind me asking? Thank you and you make real good videos.
So excited for the real camera review for the HTC 10
+Nick Myrant Me too LOL
Hey Mr. Bagnell, will you be doing such a video say, for a comparison between HTC 10 and Samsung S7?
When Pocketnow says, "Lets do something about this", it makes me very happy.
+Pravin Patil I kinda stole that from the ATB vids... Shhhh... Don't tell anyone...
Odo! "Deep Space 9"! Hah! And the "creepy gate" makes another appearance. Great review!
+Jon Komatsu I loves that creepy gate.
But seriously the "beauty" filters creep me out...
So, when is the GS7 vs 6s, vs 950 vs G5 camera battle going up then?
+Triple J Next up is the HTC 10 review, then we'll look at some comparisons.
Thanks for the full review on the camera...
Wicked review, can't wait for the HTC 10 :D
+Vandrefalk Me neither :-D
this was really useful and will you be doing the same for the HTC 10 ?
+Anthony Ferrari We are looking to put the 10 through the same set of tests. Stay tuned :-)
It's a dual LED flash though and has the two seperate colors.
hey...great review as always. Do the comparison video of all the flagships.(s7,6s,g5,htc10,lumia 950)
More shots like these please :D 1:52, 2:32, 3:20 G5 vs S7 :))))) I love macro shots a lot ^_^
I can't wait for Juan to get his hands on the HTC 10, it's been rated to be the same as the S7.
+Grim Oh it's on. It's on like donkey kong. Should be running that phone next week!
great review ! good job guys :D !
Great Review! Soo LG G5 can record slow-motion at 720p@240fps?
Another great camera review thank you for the awesome content
+Jon Coffey You're very welcome. Thank YOU for watching!
+Rachi Siders That V10 is a monster. Can't wait to see what they do with a follow up.
Can the two lens focus on different spot separately? Will this give better HDR result?
Cant wait for your htc camera review
+Γιαννης Παπαδοπουλος me neither ;-)
Great review Juan! Very impressed with the G5's cameras. My money still went with the S7 but I think the next iteration of the G could finally persuade me to move over to LG if they refine this phone like Samsung did with the S6/S7.
+GeorgeGringo21 It's a great track for them to be on. I was lukewarm on the GS6, and I feel better about the S7. I think that kind of refinement here would be welcome.
Juan, can you do camera comparison from all flagship phones? Lumia 950, GS7, iP6s+, Sony Z5 or Sony X, HTC10, LG G5
+Mukhlis Rohaizak Moving forward we're probably only going to be covering new phones. Next on the schedule is the HTC 10. Then later in the year we'll try and do some more shootouts.
Nice review! Subscribed! :)
One question, can the OIS be turned off for video? That jello distortion is the only thing that troubles me.
And awaiting the same for HTC 10 camera.
+Janis Veide Nope. I believe OIS is managed at a hardware level.
+JuanBagnell Thanks!
Sad to hear that. Will have to test it first with a few apps (so no preorder with bonuses).
Janis Veide
If you find something please let me know, but I'd be willing to bet that OIS won't be affected by any apps.
+Khotta Bogard I was really sad to see those V10 controls didn't make it into the G5...
JuanBagnell it makes me sadder to see the noisy low light video, because none of them looked clean, even the pics looked cleaner and overexposed, yet the video was a sandfest.
I wonder how the lumia 1020 camera compares to today's smartphones
Really enjoy your videos! Very well done. Keep up the good work. Can you review the xiaomi mi5 please?
Great camera review as will your reviews. By the way. What are the black bluetooth headset u have?
+Elliut N Those are my Aftershokz Bluez 2S. Really fun pair of bone conduction headphones. I reviewed them on my old channel.
Nice like the look and been wanting to replace my old set which just died on me 😢. Thanks for the quick reply. Alot of reviewers arent as engaged with the viewers. Those megapickels rock!!
Elliut N
Megapickles are SO DAMN TASTY!!!
;-)
Nice shot of Crave on Ventura, pass by there all the time
+Gevork Gevorkyan It's a cool spot, but I'm not hip enough to hang out there when there's an in-n-out right up the street. ;-)
+JuanBagnell oh ya gotta have those animal style fries!! Great job on the video, love you level of detail you go through on the cameras
+Gevork Gevorkyan I keep flirting with being vegan, but IN-n-out keeps existing... You can see my dilemma...
ty for detailed explanation of lg g5!
Terrific camera review, even by dedicated camera review standards! I won't buy this phone, but this is a great reference resource. Very impressive camera too it seems.
+Cheradenine Zakalwe It's a monster for stills. No joke.
Wouldnt be possible to correct the barrel distortion of the wide angle camera with software?
Hey Mr. +JuanBagnell , yr camera reviews are always better than most and makes me happy. So as usual nice review. But I have a few recommendations for yr next one if that's HTC 10 (which I am expecting as that is the phone everyone is curious about now-a-days). So here they are:
I'll check your gallery out :-)
+JuanBagnell hey man, u really did reply!!! awesome. waiting for yr videos man
You got some really nice shots in that link.Congratulations:D Planning to play with G5 and see what I come up with.
japanluv Thanks man...
Finally an actual review that LOOKS into the camera beyond a shitty photo
