      Yeah, it is pretty neat looking, but I'm not sure how many types of patterns you can tie with it. I mean, I tie and fish about a half dozen scuds like this any given year. Are there other patterns that use it? Probably... I'm just not familiar with them.

    I never realized how many scuds inhabit our waters until I started turning over rocks when I was out fishing. In Idaho we have a good population of fresh water shrimp and the trout love them. That pattern in pink or gray is especially effective along with the olive that you tied. Thanks for the fun tie Matt. Oh by the way if you put some orange in the middle of that pattern it looks like a pregnant scud. Sometimes that makes a difference as well. Have a great week. Warmest regards my friend.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly right Mark! I did one last year with the orange in the middle - it was a gammarus which is pretty much the same as a freshwater scud. th-cam.com/video/GMQRIebCPk4/w-d-xo.html

    That is one cool tie Matt! I like how you used mono line to make this pattern. Hey Matt, a few weeks ago I sent you an email about a tieing vise, after some research, and finding several of your vise reviews, I went with a Regal medallion c-clamp vise. I got it in the mail a few days ago, tried it out, and I absolutely love it. Just what I needed. My final decision about the vise came after watching your review. Thanks a lot Matt, this vise will probably out live me. Absolutely love it. Thanks for all you do. 👍👍

    Wow Matt, you could've been in ZZ Top's "Sharp dressed man", or maybe "Sharp fly dresser" 👍Nicely done nymph. Remember years ago Fly Tyer featured all those Czech nymphs tied by the competition fly fishing anglers like George Daniel and Lance Eagan? I loved Daniel's "Cat Nymph" tied with micro polar chenille for the body. BobMarriottsFlyFish channel has a 10 year old video of Daniel tying it. It's a little different procedure than Craven's. I like the looks of this style more than the probably more efficient perdigon style. Thanks Matt, great video. 😎🎸

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Joe! Great comment again. Speaking of micro polar chenille, I got some furry foam in my last order. I tried coming up with a hopper that it would look good on, but it ended up looking like a regular hopper, but with a micro chenille body. Have you ever used this stuff? It's pretty cool looking, but I think a lot of people use it for crab patterns. I'm not sure how much utility it'll have for trout flies. www.jsflyfishing.com/products/furry-foam

    • @joeduca8582
      @joeduca8582 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Savage Flies clouser crayfish. I used chenille for the shell, didn't have any f foam. Never had the stuff in hand, all I've heard that it's not a floating foam(?) and you can split it(?) That's all that I sorta know 😉

    • @joeduca8582
      @joeduca8582 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SavageFlies I forgot I bought some felted wool sheets to cut into strips and wrap for nymph bodies. Cool idea but never followed through I may have bought it to use as a crayfish carapace, but I've bought tons of stuff at craft and dollar stores, that sadly are now $1.25 storesor closing their doors all together

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm... I just assumed it would float okay but now that I take a closer look, I'll bet it doesn't float well, if at all. That's probably why it would work for crab patterns.

    • @joeduca8582
      @joeduca8582 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Savage Flies yeah, they also use those stick on felt disks that you put on chair and table legs to protect floors. I have some of those too... probably never will tie a 🦀 pattern, but you never know.

    Nice scud pattern. A nice fly for spring creek as well as ponds in the South for panfish. Craven is notable for designing durable, not necessarily simple, flies with an eye toward what makes a fish select a fly to eat. Thanks for another great video.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ed! I can definitely see this working in spring creeks, or up toward the dams in our tailwaters. I hear a lot of scuds get washed out of the reservoirs and there will be a higher concentration just downstream of the dam outlet. I haven't learned that from experience, but I've read it. :-)

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure it would come out the same Neil. It would give you the flat shape, but probably wouldn't be as shiny which gives the bug a little bit of a reflection, like the real ones would have. You could probably use Swiss straw, and then put a light coat of UV resin on it and see how that turns out.

  • @anablakp3200
    @anablakp3200 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are many colors of the product Thin Skin. "Fly Specks" is one of them and that is what you used for the shell back.

  • @FlyTyer1948
    @FlyTyer1948 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is a good looking fly that could pass as either a scud or caddis. Also, you created a very nice dubbing mix. Two suggestions: try cutting a “V” or blunt “V” in the Thin Skin before removing the backing. It makes the tie-in much easier to control. Also, starting the ostrich herl a bit further behind the hook eye, wrap back & then forwards over it, stopping short of the eye to avoid having herl fibers to clean up after whip finishing.
    Sartorial splendor: If you continue more formal dress for videos, you really need to get some neckties with the Savage Flies logo. You also need to either keep a hand vac or shop vac next to your tying table for cleaning up your attire after each session. If you don’t, people at work will complain that you are shedding hair & feathers all over the office. ;-)

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great tips Bob! I did see one set of instructions that mentioned cutting it to a point before tying in. I should have probably done that. Now speaking of my newfound sartorial style, I was at my tailors the other day, wearing one of my many bow ties, and he mentioned that he could take any necktie I have and turn it into a bow tie for me. So I'm sure he could make one from scratch if I had the material. But where could I have some material made with a tiny Savage Flies logo on it? Hmmm... I might have to research that. It would be a cool tie to have. :-)

    • @FlyTyer1948
