Like your tutorials but I'm upset cuz I cannot see your very first drawing it's just too light and if I can't get the first drawing then I can't keep going.

Ive been drawing since I was 2 and half years old, still to this day with all my architectural renderings, I still am fascinated that with the use of our hands we can create something that wasnt there a few minutes ago. Like that cliff and canyon. Great work sir :)
Hello Paul 😊 at long last an excellent tutor that explains the drawing process simply and easy to follow. I’m now using your technique and putting it into my acrylic painting. Thank you Paul.
Just seeing you draw in the outlines at the beginning flipped a switch in my head and made me think "how did I not realize this sooner?!". I had been drawing human faces and hands for months and gained a basic understanding of perspective but for some reason drawing landscapes felt foreign to me and It didn't occur to me to use the same observation techniques that I used previously when drawing from reference. This video reminded me that a lot of the fundamentals I learned before apply to all subjects not just one.
This is awesome!!! I enjoy drawing such things as cliffs, crevasses, rocks, mountains, and waterfalls, but I never have gotten the shading quite right. You've made it so easy to understand, and I'm sure that I can now do a rendering of the limestone cliffs around me here in Missouri. They're not high, sharp cliffs, but are only about 100 feet at the most, and rather blunted on the faces---that is, they look as if they're made of stones stacked one atop the other, miles and miles of horizontal stacked stones. They're also a rather bright orange color---I always thought limestone was white, but it isn't---so are very challenging to color. They aren't just one or two shades of orange, but are everything from a deep beige to a dark burnt orange, with a lot of golden-orange mixed in. Getting the idea across in black and white is also quite a huge challenge, but I'm determined to do it!
The trick is to train your eye to ignore the colour and concentrate on the tone.If you are creating a drawing you need to look tonally, colour will confuse matters. Remember, a black and white photo can look very realistic yet it contains no colour, it's all about the tone. Good luck.
I am just thinking about starting to draw. Your videos are great. It is wonderful that you have taken so much of your time to help other with the art. Thank you so much. You are very inspiring.
Glad you enjoy the videos, I do think anyone can draw it's all about confidence. Check out my other videos at th-cam.com/users/paulpriestleyart Cheers Paul
This tutorial is such a big help for me. I spend hours walking the eastern coast of Canada taking photos to paint. I have never been able to paint realistic rocks or cliffs. I am now starting to draw the exercises and funny thing…..I can draw rocks…and trees to my satisfaction…….will also see how this applies to acrylics since I have many nice photos. You speak clearly, give the info. and some helpful hints…..Thankyou so much, I am learning and can hardly wait to see my efforts in a full landscape. Just one question? How do we protect our graphite and charcoal drawings from smudging ??
Glad you enjoy my videos. To stop smudging rest your hand on a scrap of paper when drawing. If you have finished the drawing spray it with fixative, or cheap hair spray as it is effectively the same thing. Cheers
Good morning, Paul Priestley. I just posted your website link and a message onto my Facebook Page. To let a lot of my Artist Friends know about you :) I'm going to practice drawing Cliffs and Crevasses now. Love the 3D effect, something that I've been interested in learning and doing. Thanks again for teaching us :) Have a Great Day.
This was my first time watching your tutorial. I can't draw to save my own life, but you make it seems so easy. I will definitely try to follow your tutorial. Also would you have a tutorial how to draw a cliff facade, view straight on but not from an angle. I would like to draw on my outdoor cement block. Thank you, Bonna , USA.
Hi Bonna, Glad you enjoyed the video, I'm afraid I don't have anymore videos on drawing cliffs. I do have lots of other videos starting from absolute beginners. You can find them on th-cam.com/users/paulpriestleyart Cheers Paul
Thank you very much, Paul, for that amazing lesson!!! Yeah, as guys said bellow, you're excellent teacher. And your English is so musical for my ears. :) I'm so happy that I found your channel! Looking forward for improving my drawing skills with your lessons. Thanks a lot one more time! All the best to you! Hugs, Irina, Finland
Just started drawing and this really helps. I love your explanations of how things go and work together. When your good at something it’s easy to take little details for granted that others don’t know.

Very nice and makes me feel like I can do it. I usually use my finger to smudge and blend shadows to make it look much better, I'd just like to share that out. Edit: Can you try to teach how to make fabric drawings and shirt creases?
Really pleased you enjoyed the video. You might find this video useful as it covers how to draw folds - th-cam.com/video/vX6inCDpslk/w-d-xo.html Cheers
Looks like your technique can easily be adapted for pen and ink drawings. That's really one of my issues with learning certain techniques on graphite- most of them can only be applied to graphite.
Dear Paul, thank you for this video. I have few questions: 1) Instead of using lines, can we do the shading technique (pencil with palm grip) and achieve these effects? 2) Can we suggest the shape of cliffs and ground with shading technique (similar to how you have done through lines)? 3) The palm grip shading technique is more closer to painting. What do you think? Thank you
+Umer Niazi Dear Umer The thing about painting is there is not one way of doing things. I suggest you experiment with the ways you have suggested and you'll find it works just as well. Rules are for breaking in the art world. Cheers Paul
I love your tutorials but the beginning when do the initial sketch you say that it might be too light well for me I cant see them hardly. Would it be possible to make it slightly darker. Thank you
Hi Paul, Do you think you could do this sometime in watercolor? This would be a great help, because this is the type of painting she I would like too do. Thanks
Mmm yeah, but i want to draw a cliff from like the bottom of the page, as if i'm looking over one, not right on the edge though if you get me, around 30 to 40 feet from the edge...I don't know how to make it look like a cliff at all from that angle, because it would just be grass, know what i mean?.
If you are standing where you suggest you can't see the cliff so you don't need to draw it. Everything apart from where you are standing is going to be very light in tone, that's about it really.
I like that you started off mentioning the 'tools'/pencils you are using to create this drawing; thank you for that sir

Looks like your technique can easily be adapted for pen and ink drawings. That's really one of my issues with learning certain techniques on graphite- most of them can only be applied to graphite.
You can't create the subtlety of tone in pen that you can with graphite. You create tone by use of line with pen as you pointed out from the video
