  • If you've ever rented an apartment in New York City, then you know, it is a very stressful process. Once you finally think you've found the place, the next hurdle is making sure you earn 40 times the rent. FOX 5 NY's Duarte Geraldino is digging into this housing requirement and the option is now available for New Yorkers who don't meet it.

You have to be super rich or super poor to live in this city. Being in the middle just means you're paying too much for everything.

That's because it can take YEARS to evict a non paying tenant. We're talking clear cut cases of default. The city of New York is directly to blame for the rise of this third party insurance provider.

Rent is absolutely too damn high with the landlords profiting from rent hikes. While we, the tenants are suffering in silence with horrible living conditions. What happened to very low affordable housing for the lower working middle class of people. Shame on you, Mayor, City Council, for making it impossible to live in the city we love.

It is very bad the living conditions many people endure and don't report in fear of retaliation or illegal rent increase. I'm currently fighting a slumlord who owns over 100 buildings and does not upkeep any of them. It's time we force their hands

@@jokerpilled2535 honestly if you give people (not that it's our obligation to) the information needed to defend themselves and be the example, they will quickly follow and act faster. It sucks that most don't act and flee which allows slumlords to get away with it but enough outrage can spark some movement.

I'm a small landlord myself; as much as I'd love to let my tenants live for free, money is needed to maintain the building, pay property taxes and bills, and occasionally renovate it... but fuck, I don't charge anywhere near the outrageous rents we see everywhere today

Having to earn 40x the rent is crazy. It stops working people from renting a decent apartment. I understand landlords wanting to protect themselves from renting to someone who could stop paying rent down the line but how are regular New Yorkers supposed to find housing.

This country relies on the backs of the working class. Yet the top 10% treat the bottom 90% of the population as expendable. If you don't take care of the engine the entire car sits inoperable. Boggles my mind how people who devote their entire lives to long term financial gain cannot comprehend sustainability.

We wouldn't need a third party guarantor if the eviction laws WERE NOT INSANE.
If the city allowed landlords to evict tenants who are clearly in breach of their contract within 3 months vs SEVERAL YEARS wouldn't need an outside party like this to come in.
Im sure the city will move to ban this type of insurance as well because its not fair to as of yet undefined someone that will be affected by this.
Every effort to make things better is gonna be slapped away by the poltical class whos gonna ride this burning heap of trash right into the gutter.

Win the apartment lottery. Seriously google it.
The laws make it hard for middle class to rent. But make it almost impossible for small landlords to be landlords. Impossible to get squatters or nonpayers out. High taxes and weird rules.

  • @GreenOcean1990

It is very easy to blame landlords but they too have to pay increasing taxes, heating oil costs, maintenance workers costs, contractors' costs, materials, labor, housekeeping etc and so many more costs that come along with owning/maintaining a building in NY. People think landlords are minting money, contrary to whats actually happening. I know several whose rents are not enough to make all those payments and more. Look at the tip of the pyramid, not in the middle, that gets pressured from both sides. Ignorance and blaming the people in the middle isn't the solution. You are only shooting the messenger who brings you your important parcels.
