  • Here is a retired Chesapeake Bay Waterman showing his expert technique to making a net for crabbing on the bay. It is an age old craft that is dwindling as is the commercial fishing on the bay. heres where you can purchase your own copy of this video. tilghmanmuseum.org/index.php/t...

    Twelve years ago this was posted...let this video be never forgotten...this teaches you the proper way to weave a net using one continuous piece of cordage...many other newer videos are too clumsy and require you to cut and re-tie the line several times.it don't matter how old this footage is...it's by far the greatest video on net weave. 😊

    This an amazing video and I'm so glad to have found it. It has become almost impossible to find a quality tied crab net. I hope to learn to tie these nets and then keep his legacy alive.

    That's the best net-making video I've ever seen. You can feel all the experience behind, making the teaching meaningful and easy to understand.
    Thank you very much for showing us!

    I just used this method to put a new bottom in a crab ring...came out great!!! Thanks for sharing!!!! To those who were asking about the lap jig, just make one!!! I used an old cutting board and a couple screws....Unless you plan on going pro, this will do....Looking for a ring?? I plan to make a trout net from an old tennis rackett from goodwill!!

    Mr. Wilson Roe donates his time each weekend to the Tilghman Watermen's Museum demonstrating net making on the front porch. The Museum appreciates him sharing his talent with the many visitors of the Museum.

    My husband made the jig for me, but made the holes closer for a finer mesh. It works, but how do I figure how many to start with to make my net big enough? We use a 30" ring that we drop with bait in the bottom. I am working on one but I am having to add extra mesh to hopefully make it large enough to attach it to the big ring.

    where'd he get the lap jig

  • @persiablu
    @persiablu 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @tubeme620 I think you could start on a strait line and butt up the loops just like he does on the ring. Then tie up the line to make the center, or "piko" (what my grampa told me it's called)

    What size is the pegs and how deep are they inserted? Thanks

      I do appreciate Mr Roe's excellent instruction. I have watched this 4-part series several times over the last few years, and never tire of it. I'm of about the same vintage as Mr Roe. I grew up in a small hamlet on the banks of the Tennessee River (Pickwick Lake) where commercial fishing was a source of livelihood for many, so in my youth I got to watch quite a lot of net making and always found it mesmerizing.
      I realize this question is now four years old, and probably long forgotten by lojack223, but I'll throw my two cents in, for the benefit of any others who may care. If you consider most solid wood stock such as that is on the order of 3/4" thick, and also by visually comparing or gauging against the tape measure markings, the oak stock used in the jig shown is probably on the order of 5/8" to 3/4" thick, and the pegs appear to be about one-third as thick, so 1/4" steel dowels would be a good bet.
      Again, judging against the tape measure, I'd say the oak pieces (i.e. other than the seat) are probably between 1 1/2" and 2" wide, so I would guess the holes for the movable peg are probably 1/2 to 3/4" deep, ...too deep and it would be troublesome to extract and re-insert each time, too shallow and it would be wobbly. (Because a tight fit would result in air suction when pulling out/pushing in.) The rearmost peg is probably deeper ...maybe even full depth of that piece of wood, because you would not want it wobbling around.
