The company that is currently releasing al the classic SSI games is called SNEG, they may be licensing these titles rather than being the IP owners however. Psygnosis is owned by Sony and they seem to be happy just sitting on that game catalogue. Sony and Warner Bros. have been making some costly errors this past year so if Atari plays there cards right (and Sony and Warner are really desperate) they could make an offer if the stars aline and get those libraries.
I love your regular or one-off podcasts. Do what makes you happy. An Atari ST mini would be awesome! Dungeon Master was the "killer app" I remember from my days as a lad.
I did the version of Breakout for the ST that you show at about the 10-minute mark. It's a shame you showed it in ST Low resolution instead of on the Falcon030. Your speculation about the game was a bit off. The main goal for the game was to do a GEM Desk Accessory that worked in *all* the graphics modes available across the entire ST line, from the original 520ST to the TT030 and Falcon030, including monochrome. It also showed off the digital sound capabilities of the STE and Falcon030. The sounds you hear for the ball hitting the walls, bricks, and paddle are positioned in stereo according to where they happen on screen. Unfortunately, the idea to do the game happened at the last minute and I only had about 3 weeks to do everything (*part-time*) before the Falcon030 pack-in disks were finalized. There was no time to do anything with the sound for older ST models. Years later, I did a much fancier version for Windows, but there were all sorts of clones, so it was really a personal project that never got released anywhere.
No, I switched between 1040 ST and 4100 STe, but a lot of the later Microprose games running from an HD only worked in ST mode so kept it as my default
A desktop accessory version of Breakout was the first ST game. It was shown when the ST was demonstrated at the Winter CES January 1985. Looks more primitive than the version in the video. May not have been running on final hardware looking at the YT video of it
There’s a ton of shareware they could probably get away with including on an ST retro console, like Cold Revenge (altho Paramount might come after them) and Arena Earth.
@@sunspot42 I remember that! Good early game! I will do a video on the Budgie UK licenseware that they could probably easily license also. There were a lot of good ST arcade style ganes that arrived via share abd license Ware
The ST had a lot of great games, but it was never geared towards the traditional Atari arcade games such as Berzerk or Breakout. Now, Infogrames made many great games for the ST (besides Hostages) like TNT or North and South.
A great way to beef up the catalogue would be to look at all the homebrew games (just like they did with Bentley Bear Crystal Quest for the 7800). This might be the best bet to find games which push the limit of the machine. There are also some games which are really fun to play even if they're not technically groundgreaking such as Shotgun (currently in preview)
Very interesting list and as a UK ST owner I had a lot of the games and still have the original discs stored away. The Atari ST was probably bigger in the UK, Germany and France than the US and so probably easier to buy good games although there was a fair share of low rent budget titles too.
It was hard to buy anything ST in the USA, but what the big software places did sell, was usually of decent quality from big USA publishers while it lasted. It wasn't until we found an import shop 50 miles away that we were introduced to the full breadth of ST games from the UK and Europe, and that's when our trye ST obsession started!
I just found a Typo Attack cartridge.... I was horrible at it but it's just due to the slight differences in the keyboard layouts....... need to do more typing on my Atari 8-bit.
He alerted us. Also put a link to Atariage in there and we also mention that But if you know the exact person or source I’ll edit the description with the new info

That would be awesome actually. The current Atari would be good stewards of it

Thanks POV! And yeah, DM was the killer app.

Oh hey Mike!
Nice! Great story about this game. Awesome job! I like to use the emulator like it’s my old 1040 ST
AHH that's because Steve doesn't default to STE emulation like I do (Jeff). Thanks for telling us this, Mike! Fellow but more imprint Fulton!

@@JesterEric The video shows the version I did in 1992. There may have been a version shown at the 1985 Winter CES but if so, it was never released.
If I was Atari or a company selling retro tech, I would hire Jeff and Steve Fulton as consultants. What a great rundown.

Ohh, also Hex by Mark of the Unicorn, probably the best early ST game. That and Starglider.

Pretty sure they also own “The Humans / Dino Dudes.” They probably don’t even know they own it.
Noted. Thanks!

YES! This should be there move. Like The New FASTER racing game.

Did Hardball use a raster scan interrupt to overlay a low res screen over a medium res screen?
I think so. They did some cool early stuff with the ST. i wish they had continued to make game s for it.
Wasn't found by coffee boy...

What about gauntlet.
“Atari Games” game which means it’s owned by Warner Brothers.
So if they dont own the rights to the Falcon they cant put Llamazap on an ST mini
They don't own the trademark to "Falcon", not sure if that extends to the actual chipset, etc.
I believe Sony bought the Falcon design for their PS2 back in the day just for the looks. I don't think they bought software IPs.
In 1995, the music company C-Lab bought the rights to the Falcon hardware
