The Best *#@! Christmas Ever: An Atari 8-bit Journey Into The Vertical Blank

- The final, definitive version of the story we've been trying to tell for the past 6 years. Christmas 1983, the Atari 8-bit computer Christmas was, for many reasons, the best *#@! Christmas ever. This new version gives a rounder picture, explains The Vertical Blank, obsesses over Star Wars, and tries to explain the actual result of Christmas 1983, once and for all.

This was awesome! kind of like a "Christmas Story" for Atari kids. thanks, for sharing... with all the craziness, stress and anxiety in the world today, your video brought me back, even for just an hour, to a much better time.
A brilliant and heartfelt tribute, not only to our beloved Atari but also to your parents. Funny how your experiences resembled my own and I’ll bet so many other’s too. Thanks for the memories. I sent a link to this to my best friend and we’ll both have a great time reminiscing. Happy Holidays and thanks again! Stay Atari!
Stay Atari!
Awesome and touching!
thanks!
great video, loved the story of how you two got your Atari 800, and how you never gave up on the dream.
I myself bought a 400 in 1983 , two months before christmas, was brought to my house as a fun time to check it out . Once I played Star Raiders I knew I had to own this machine, I lucked out and the guy that owned it was looking to sell,. 400 dollars later, I owned a 400 ,tape drive, Star Raiders and Space Invaders. I later upgraded to 48 K ,a 1050 disk drive and the Action Programming cart, and created a game I named Midas Maze for analog magazine. issue 52.
. I now program using the Godot Game engine. if not the for chance meeting with my 400 I would have never learned to program.
so....thank you Atari, thank you Star Raiders, and thank you guys for this wonderful story, filled me with the same feeling I got back in 1983.,
Yes! Awesome story. I think many people got their inspiration this way!
Awesome. Thanks and that sounds like an awesome haul for $400. I'm looking to take on Action! some day.
On Christmas Eve "shopping" for Atari computer equipment, your dad demonstrated his acting chops, after all. Some stars shine bright or go nova, others are but a twinkle. They're all special.
he did!
That's a great account of your childhood and that Xmas. Very interesting!! I was a little older, in '81 I bought a TRS-80 Color Computer with 4k RAM and a cassette deck. I was 18 y/o.
Same basic timeframe. Very cool.
So loved this!! Great way to frame and tell this story, and had me thinking of my own "origin story".... my guess is that everyone that watches this will be doing the same. Thank you for sharing.
Funny, I almost called it "Origin Story", and I hope it's somewhat universal, or that others can find a way to connect their own story to it.
Thx for the video. We had very similar lives. My dad bought me my Atari 400 in '79. I worked on CRT's in electronics class in HS. My dream came true after that by joining USAF and working on the (then) new F-15E airplane. Really enjoyed you sharing that part of your life. 👍. Merry Xmas
F15E! Wow. Very cool.
Thank you, soooo much for caring and sharing!!! For I too, can relate in soooo many ways with my father (racing dirt bikes / doing brake jobs / and anything to save a buck or two / not to mention his infinity for collecting Case Knives and such) plus growing up in the same era. I was constantly threatened with the "skid row" theme of life and as it turns out, I am a very successful gamer/software developer/mucho money maker, and do not live in my mother's basement. And yes, I'm married with my awesome love of my life, who supports my crazy collection of video-games!!! Once again, thank you!!!
@@markracer3281 awesome!!! Our dads are proud!
Remarkable! There is so much in this 8-Bit journey; I am overwhelmed. I had never the movie Westworld but I was intrigued seeing the poster on this channel, so I watched it this year. It was definitely lacking, especially in 2024, but I felt I needed to experience the movie. I will be watching this episode next Christmas as well.
Thanks @Jolt7800, happy there was something here you could connect with.
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank, there was a lot I could connect with
Epic tale, perfect watch for Christmas Eve, loved it thank you guys
You are welcome!!
I think you and i are pretty close to contemporaries (bornin '70 myself). I don't understand why and how fun technology so eluded you. When i was 4 or 5 i lived, dirt poor, with my mom, but I got to see first gen pong clones, and those electric racecar toys when at other people's houses. Soon after, my life got very atypical, but I can't understand how or why it was so difficult to be at friends houses with moms and dads who weren't failed actors. I like, and just subscribed to your channel, but i gotta say...i don't get it!
These are just vignettes that the overall story, not a complete and total picture of every event, which would be impossible. I'm happy your mom made it good for you, our mom did what she could too.
