As a retired flight nurse in the USA there are so many calls that will be with me into eternity. Many of these aren’t because of how gruesome the case was, or how unusual, etc., but because of the people. The parents of a child that who had injuries too severe to support life - I did any and everything to support and protect those parents. Another child that I had run up to me in a Walmart store because I had “saved his life.” I remembered him not for what had made him unwell, but for how grateful he had been. I always treated patients like family , with love and kindness. Love and kindness do more for pain than any drug. You have to be “called “ to this kind of work. If you aren’t, you won’t survive this field of work. It takes a toll on you physically, mentally, and emotionally - and yet there is nothing else I could ever do. I look back on my career with joy. You are the richest person in the world when you are fulfilled.
A random internet stranger wants to thank you for being a miracle worker. Even if you didn't save everyone, the kindness in your heart clearly shines through, and sometimes, that's exactly what a family needs. It sounds like you definitely found your calling in life and did extremely well at it. As someone who had frequent visits to our house until my father passed away, I consider all medics to be miracle workers, even if you're "just doing your job." Thanks for being an incredible human being.

As a retired paramedic I have to agree with even if we can’t save the patient we can give kindness to those left behind. That was the greatest honor o f my career, giving comfort to someone on the worst day of their lives.

Now that I’m older I couldn’t do these jobs anymore. I was a dispatcher, an EMT and a Police Sgt and I’ve seen so much I just couldn’t anymore. It takes so much of you. I commend all those in the field. When I began my journey I had a Sgt say to me “remember your life as it is right now. The best you can hope for at the end of the journey is to have everything you have right now”. He was so right and I don’t even remember his name but it stuck with me.
Wow and I thought we have it harder in the united states of America I'm not a firefighter or paramedic or police officer I'm just a retired truck driver live life being retired but watch these videos that shows a lot of amazing people who are out there serving and helping people who are in danger life and death thank you for your service
Well, one of those good things about emergency services in the United States is that I most large cities the “ambulance” is provided by the fire department. Thus when the paramedics are dispatched, a fire truck is dispatched too to provide manpower for cases such as the older man unable to walk. Really needed them when my mother was suffering from a urinary tract infection that went septic. Unfortunately it was too late and we lost her.

I don't know about the industry, but is that why there are independent or contract ambulances in some areas to back up the county?
And that's why we don't want socialized medical care in the US

Seems the NHS needs to start creating Urgent Care Clinics at various locations in areas that require a lot of ambulances. That way the patients could either take themselves there, or the ambulance crews could deliver the less critical cases there for treatment. Also, they could have a crew base at these Urgent Care Clinics that could deploy to pick up the people who have fallen... 🎉😊

It's a nasty addiction!my husband had emphysyma after smoking 4 packs a day for over 30 years,he managed to kick them a couple of years before he passed of a heart attack,like the gentleman in the video,we had eaten breakfast together,then I went to sort the bedrooms out,I found him unresponsive on the settee,the ambulance crew tried for over 40 mins to revive him,but he was gone.Both my sons smoke today,even though they saw what their father went through first hand and there is a family history of lung disease in the family.I know if you really want to,you can cut them out,I did, my hubby did,albeit a bit late,but obviously my sons are hiding behind their fingers(a saying we have here in Greece.)because they don't have any health problems yet.as I said,it's a nasty addiction which slowly steals your ability to breathe.
I couldn't believe that either. I smoked on and off for nearly 20 years, it was harder to quit than drinking for me. I went cold turkey and daily mantras. But the real desire to wan to smoke took years to go away when hanging out with smokers or after a few drinks. After a few years I have no desired but I make a lot of other healthier choices too that helps. My husband smokes cigars, and I can't get him to quit.

Paul passed away right in front of his family from emphysema ,which is caused by smoking, yet there they are still smoking. Smoking kills. Thankful I live in the USA where very few ppl smoke .

I know the UK has "111", too, but they, and we here in the US, need a major ad campaign to keep people from calling the EMERGENCY number when someone is not actively bleeding or dying. And here (US) needs to have a second 3 digit number for us to call for "non-emergencies but I need help" calls. I was in a fender bender the other day and needed a cop for a report, but it wasn't an emergency. Since I was out of town in a rural area I didn't know WHOM to call, so I kind of had to call 911. Felt terrible about it. Maybe a "444" "For help" would be an idea.
non emergency is just their regular number. If you have a smart phone you look it up from you map app. I guess people aren't used to looking up regular old numbers anymore, remember we use to cal 411?

There are major differences with what the paramedics do in the UK and the US. In the US, the paras job is to get you to a hospital and to stabilize you if they can. In the UK, their job is to fix what they can before they go to hospital. Which is why they have less ambulances, and the calls take much more time than they do in the US.
We're fighting for more skills, but we also make the same as people that work fast food and grocery stores.

Why did the shooting appear to get priority over the stabbing in the care sent?
It seems to me that they need to hire more parametric and ambulances as well as having some local area parametric in the townships who can be on call and respond to the patients in their homes prior to the ambulances arrival. Especially for the people who have fallen and can't get up... 😢

The situation has gotten worse since Brexit, as I believe this was before Brexit. The NHS funding has 😢funnelled into private care because of the current government.

A care home that has people with dementia...they can be quite strong, unpredictable and violent.
I do not know why you need 5 paramedics to take care of an overdose, even a basic life support unit with narcan can manage that, it is a waste of time and resources. Most cases during this episode could be managed by one crew of two medics specially with such high call volume.

A lot of the people in America that think we should have free health insurance they don’t see a lot of these consequences where you can’t get medical care and timely manner. They said they had 15 ambulances to cover 8 1/2 million people that’s insane I mean I can’t even believe that whoever put that program together, needs to have their head examined.

I know here were I live we have first responders/firefighters who come out on calls that are for minor stuff like elderly falls that just possibly need picked up or minor scraps that access them and if it turns out they are more than just a minor fall and need an ambulance they call for one to keep the ambulances available for emergencies.... just wondering why they don't have their firefighters or fire brigade do that?

I wonder how many people die waiting for an ambulance? Here in America, it's only if you live in a remote area or in the aftermath of a serious disaster that you'd have to wait an hour or more for an ambulance.

How on earth do you know? According to research, in the US, _ "While there is an unavoidable delay between a 911 call and EMS arrival, to our knowledge, no current published data exist to quantify these time frames."_ Despite that, the research got hold of figures - which they decided to ignore - of, "encounters with arrival times 120 minutes or longer or transport times 180 minutes or longer". See the National Library of Medicine, "Emergency Medical Services Response Times in Rural, Suburban, and Urban Areas".
Probably has more to do with the fact that in the USA you only call for a ambulance when it’s really a emergency since we have to pay so much money for the ride. So most people get there selfs to the hospital if it’s at all possible.

Imagine being in the US and health insurance doesn’t cover ambulance service because for profit healthcare allows them to charge thousands and thousands of dollars leaving people beholden to them. They even report you to the credit agencies and ruin your credit. People file bankruptcy over medical bills here. Insanity.
Because every medical service negotiates with the insurance companies they pay outrageous amounts for things that cost dollars.
I didn’t have insurance and paid $4 for a prescription. On insurance I pay a $60 copay for the same medication. That tells you all you need to know.
Have you ever called for an ambulance only to be told there are no ambulances available? Can you imagine calling 911 because your acrylic nail has broken and is stabbing you?
@@xo2quilt That happens in the US as well. It's well over 12% in the US, partly because, unlike most other developed agencies, the service is fragmented into over 20,000 agencies. Plus, in the US, it's often the _fire service_ that's sent out to deal with medical emergencies! And in some countries, the crank call rate is 80%+.
@@CatholicSatan Wow, guess I have been blessed to live in the right places. Crank calls should be traced and those people made to pay for the costs associated with their crank calls!
@@CatholicSatan in Hong Kong fire engines are equipped to deal with medical emergencies to a point. I've called 999 for people when 999 was flooded, the automated system told me to call a special fire services medical emergency line.
@@CatholicSatan I there are 80% crank calls, they need to make it a crime if it isn’t already. Then enforce it with zero tolerance. The US has specific crime statutes for misuse of the 911 system. They vary in detail from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
The US is a patchwork of law because each state makes their own laws and each state has a state law enforcement agency. Then each county has a sheriff who is elected. Each municipality has its own police force. That includes municipalities that are surrounded by another municipality. It would be confusing for people from other countries. I think the UK has individual police agencies for municipalities but only one national police (correct me if I am wrong, but that is how I understand it.
I live outside a large city in an unincorporated area of the county. We have our own fire service which includes ambulances and the county has a library system. Our healthcare system is a nightmare as the whole world knows. Even so, it is MUCH better after Obama got some legislation passed.
Too bad we can’t take lessons from each other to develop the most efficient and cost effective protocols possible for each public service without burying people in taxes.
Of the 26 heart attacks I wonder what percent are from drug addiction and obesity. That's an important distinction.
Family history plays a big part. My husband just had a five way bypass. Never smoked, never used drugs rarely even over the counter,exercised religiously, ate healthy, good weight.
This is going to sound heartless. But if there it's a wait for help for with immanent threat to life, over doses should not get priority over accidental injuries or sudden attacks in illness with life threatening symptoms both must come first. So often they don't even want the treatment while someone else wants to live.

15! 15 ambulances it doesn't sound like London is giving the proper services needed for their citizens. I bet the royal family can spare a little bit more money for their loyal citizens. Maybe sale a jewel or two?
I think it’s a very bad approach to tell people that an ambulance is not required. I think it would be far better to tell people that they are backed up up. Just tell them the truth. Tell them that they have been swamped with life-threatening calls and they’ve simply run out of ambulances but they’re working as hard as they can to clear these calls. As an American living under the 911 system, I know things can get backed up and have kilter at times. But it’s better to tell people the truth then tell them their situation does not require an ambulance.
Imagine being in one of these situations and needing an ambulance, for then to ask you for your debit card details because private health insurance isn't affordable....this is what you'll get if you vote tory at the next GE.

Actually, London has a population of 9,176,530; this must've been prior to 2020. My world almanac says the higher number. This is the drawback of socialized medicine -- care is rationed, so not so many doctors, nurses, ambulances, paramedics, etc..

@@michelefritchie6198 Health care in the US is rationed up the wazoo. Have you never heard of insurance companies or doctors or hospitals refusing care because the patient was "not in network"? Or because you have a pre-existing condition? US health insurance companies are rightly known as "death panels". Over 10% of the population has no health insurance and medical outcomes in the US are _way_ below other developed countries. Of the top ten countries, 8 are in Europe (including the UK) plus Canada and Australia, the US ranks as 23rd.
@@CatholicSatan Where I live, we have a problem with patient dumping. It's usually poor, indigent, and elderly patients who get dumped, out on the street, after being treated, with no way to contact someone to care for them or take them home. I was in a shelter, and one night a cab dumped a 90 year old lady, who had nothing but the hospital gown on her at the shelter. Our shelter director, after getting the lady's story, went to the cab driver and told him to take this lady back to the hospital or she was calling the cops on him. The cabbie obeyed.
Health care rationing is more defined as limiting the number of procedures that doctors and hospitals are allowed to perform. In Canada, I've heard of people having to wait five years for certain lifesaving procedures, or having dental care.
But I agree, insurance companies were once the friend of the less wealthy, now they're money-grubbing for-profit companies. On the flip side, hospitals can go broke treating too many people without insurance.
Try living somewhere else for a year and you will know.
A heroin overdose is NOT a situation that should be prioritised
We EMTs don't presume to try and play God and decide who is more WORTH saving. That's a slippery slope. Thinking like that leads to: a person of this age is less of a priority, a person who is drunk is less of a priority, a person who caused the traffic accident is less of a priority, a person of this ethnic group is less of a priority, a person of that religion is less of a priority, a person suffering from mental illness is less of a priority. Everyone is someone's child, parent, partner, family, or friend. No one is worthless.
