It seems to me that one of the clues to the phenomenon of Diana is the combination of Slavic, Eastern and Western culture in her and in her voice. It is like the embodiment of the idea of All Man as opposed to the Western Superman (F. M. Dostoevsky). It is like Russia itself with its multipolarity and the ability to accommodate different peoples, cultures and beliefs. Diana is a carrier of the Russian cultural code, which resonates in the soul of many people.

I had seen two or three other performances ("Human", "Wicked Game", and "Dernière Danse" if I remember correctly) before I saw this one. With those others, I admired Diana's voice and artistry. This performance took me to an entirely different level of admiration. It basically ruined my desire to pay any attention to any other deserving artist. Three and a half years later, I very rarely listen to anyone else.
Diana speaks to me, somehow, on something greater than a voice-to-ears level. I don't understand it, so I can't explain it. I'm just grateful to be here for it.

One video of Diana's, in my sight, is a total masterpiece the like of which I don't remember ever seeing before in my long life. It's a must see for anyone that loves singing with unending emotion. The background of the song is essential to know. The title of the song is "Ornery (or "Fastidious" or "Finicky") Horses". The song has nothing to do with horses in reality - the horses are being used as a metaphor for life. The author of song is begging the horses to slow down (he is aware he is approaching death), but, at the same time he is whipping them along (his chaotic lifestyle) - he knows that his lifestyle is taking him to an early death, however, he is unable to change it.....the composer of the song, Vladimir Vysotsky, was a singer-songwriter, poet, and actor as well as an alcoholic & drug addict and died in 1980 at the age of 42. th-cam.com/video/lu8iW9BcWmY/w-d-xo.html . The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying.
There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers.
There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home.
At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family.
The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.
The belief of water being the bound between the living and the dead was held right across northern Europe. The so called bog mummies were messengers sent to the world of the dead.

I would like to turn your attention to Diana's own composition "Revelation", which started as a seminar project of her music studies and turned out to be a publishable production.

Other people have described her screechy technique as vocal fry.
But yes, clearly a uniquely talented performer.
When Diana was practicing for "It's a Man's World" her vocal coach noticed that Diana's voice sounded off, that there was something wrong. The coach figured out that Diana had never learned/been taught to care for her voice and was developing nodules on her vocal cords. The nodules were able to be treated non-surgically, but "Rechenka" is the first song after the discovery of the nodules. I wonder if that might account for some of the rasp that you're hearing here.

I'm lucky that i became a fan of Diana's world from this song. And could see how she grow in her talents.
As for the song, i saw info that it's Novgorod ritual song. Thus, it's nothern ancient Rus folklore, where was a strong influence of scandinavian culture.
Ничего подобного, такие песни пели на всей территории древней Руси и России так же и в южных регионах где не было никакого влияния скандинавской культуры.
@@Alexandr58268 Ну, про влияние скандинавов можно целую диссертацию написать, начиная с факта, что Рюрик пришел с севера и сел на престоле условно южной Руси. А так же что "из варяг в греки" путь не мог не привнести на всю Русь это влияние. Но речь про песню. Я лишь сказал, что видел инфу именно про эту песню, что она называется "Новгородская обрядовая". Я это не утверждаю. И естественно, что такие песни пели везде, и не только на Руси.

This is an old wedding ritual song, it's like a puzzle, it consists of phrases taken from ritual songs. Where it is sung in a whisper is like the words of a deceased mother, because in Russia since ancient times it was believed that the river is the border between the world of the living and the dead, as in the mythology of others countries. So the girl-orphan came to the river to tell the mother that she was being given away for the unloved, to a strange family, ask for blessings and cry.
This is pretty much Diana's theme song, if there is such a thing. It's a very old traditional Russian song, and she is just the master of it. It's still hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that she was only fourteen years old here. Yes, the "yodeling technique" she does is very difficult. But, add to that, she's being picked up and set into a boat without missing a beat. Very few reactors mention that and it seems to me to be an important thing to point out.

yodelling effect is a throat singing, very common in Eastern Siberia. Especially in Yakut singing, there are three types of throat singing and this looks like one of it.

This song has nothing to do with Kazakhstan, it's an original Russian folk song. Yes, our folk songs are mostly that dark, especially when it comes to wedding songs. And Diana's vocal takes it to an absolutely another level. Even if u know nothing about the Russian language or culture, u still get goosebumps from her performance. There's another high skilled Russian folk singer Pelageya with a brilliant voice, check out on her too
