    Just found your channel and subscribed a few days ago. Nice job with the videos and in getting your daughters outside. One comment: the Lynch guide doesn’t produce revenue for the FTC, but buying the official guide does. Buying the official guide helps fund maintenance of the trail.

      Thanks! And that's a great point. I have been a member of the FTC and supported that way, but never thought about the book!

    I ran across this video when researching the FHT a while back. I'm putting together a trip for early November, and I have rewatched a couple times in the past few days. It has been a long time since I have done any hiking, so I am doing a couple hours each day on my treadmill. It helps me with my training because every time you guys are on an uphill in the video, I increase the incline on the treadmill. I'm also watching some of your other videos from up in the Great White North, and it looks like there are some good trails that I might like to hike when things are back to normal.

    I plan to hike this one around march-april and i was wondering if you need a bear canister or bear hang is enough? Is there any place to pick up food or you need to bring all of it? Thanks

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We used URSacks, but the FHT volunteers have been installing bear poles in some campsites. We took all of our food with us, but there are plenty of access points to stash a cache or two along the way.

    Hey! Great video. My son and daughter and I are gonnago up in Oct to do night 3 day hike. We are all in good shape, but don't have a sense for how many miles we would do in one day. Our plan is drive up (from Charleston) Friday am, park and find a shuttle, then hike for 2 nights back to the car. Any thoughts?

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey - thanks so much for joining us! Subbed back - can't wait to watch your videos! No, we did not cache anything at all. Lots of water and really, we pack light/compact enough food that it was not a big deal to carry what we needed. Plus, I'm the type of guy who would worry about not having the stash there when we needed it if an animal or person found it... Thinking of going back out this spring myself - in the opposite direction this time. Hope to see you on the trail!

    Awesome video. I was planning on section hiking the AT with my wife and daughter but then I came across the Foothills Trail. Just wondering what tent did you use and what was your pack weight? I want to keep my base weight below 20-25 lbs and their weights below 15 lbs. Do you think those are acceptable weights or should I aim for lower?
    Like you, Ill probably be carrying the tent for all of use to sleep in so Im in the market for a 3-4 person lightweight tent. Any suggestions?

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one we used was the Big Agnes Copper Spur 4. When divided tip 3 was, the weight was quite low per person.

    Looked like an awesome hike. Kudos to your daughters for making that trek. Considering doing this myself early fall. You wouldn't happened to have saved the coordinates on those camp site by any chance? Some look great for hammock use.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Tyler. It was! And the girls were great. After this, they could do most of the long hikes we have in our minds... You definitely should do it!! With regard to GPS info - I can certainly check if you let me know what sites in particular. (most are in the guidebook or the antigravity gear map) While I did not store them specifically, we likely have some info in GAIA GPS and on my Garmin inReach that might help. And yes - the trail is actually better suited for a hammock than a tent in many places.

    • @ChrisfromFL
      @ChrisfromFL 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Tyler, I will be hammocking the Foothills Trail in October 2018. I'm starting on the 18th. I did an over nighter from Whitewater Falls to Sloan's Creek a few years ago. But I was totally out of shape following some surgery and being from South Florida did not help me prepare for the elevation changes. So now that I'm retired and in better shape I'm going to try a thru hike. Believe me, one nice thing about FHT, there are plenty of trees and finding a places to hang is NOT a problem.

    If you had to remove items from your pack from this trip what would you all have not brought?

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great question but also very trip specific. On this trip I think I would've left home a few Battery's that I brought for charging our cameras and other equipment. The sun was out pretty much every day in full force meeting my solar charger was way ahead of my needs. That would've save me a couple of pounds in batteries. I have to say however that this is in hindsight and on the North Boundary Trail last fall I was under powered with batteries and was worried every day about getting enough solar charging done on such a long trip

    Enjoyed watching! Wish I had before my boys and I did a 3-day section from Frozen Creek Access (Canebreak Trail) to Laurel Valley during Labor Day weekend recently (hot! and humid!) -- I hadn't done any reading beforehand and the stairs of Heart[rate]ache Ridge took us by surprise (302 up and 294 down, I read about it that night in my hammock). My younger son and I plan to section hiking the AT starting next Spring Break. Do you have any plans to do the AT with daughters?

      @HowestheHike  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! And wow - what a great section for you guys. But yes - hot and humid makes it a bit crazy!! We have no firm plans right now for any AT sections, but it has been part of our thoughts. So who knows, maybe we will see you guys on the trail!

      @UCYKf_ksohj-OJiuh9LYdBVg Hey guys, like the video. Had hoped to do this 6 day plan in the spring with my 16yr daughter and 13yrs son. Coronavirus has delayed it to the point that we'll need to do it at the start of July. We live in the area so are familiar with the weather, but just wanted to ask the two of you what you thought our 'distance' chances (or reality check on those) should be? Can we realistically do the 6 day plan in July!?

    • @HowestheHike
