    Patrick, it wasn't boring at all. For those interested in extended cruising (especially solo) this is really hot stuff...Thank you. I also like your philosophy and words around being able to rewrite your ending....That really resonates with me as I'm not far off your age and I plan to have at least another 20 years of mucking about on sailboats....keep em coming big fella!

    Patrick- so great to have you back! I was genuinely worried that something had beset you! Again- what a refreshing video. I'm never going to own a boat (in fact I've only sailed dinghies in my school days) but I have become fascinated by sailing videos and love to see how the various systems are used to ease the challenge of open water sailing. I'm looking forward to hearing more. Welcome back! You have been missed.

    Hi Patrick. Hope your well. So many good points made well in this video. Volvo Penta: The engines are good, generally based on Perkins diesels but, and its a big but. They fit the cheapest ancillaries! Cast iron elbows, Undersized raw water pumps, poorly designed heat exchangers that have bad sealing solutions between the raw water and coolant. The standard Volvo exhaust muffler is a joke with a life expectancy of 2 years and made completely of the wrong materials! The Vetus equivalent being a far superior product at a fraction of the price. And that air box / filter!!!! We have changed to a K&N product half the price, lasts forever. Volvo really need to get their house in order. Their reputation is failing fast! We think you made the right choice of boat for you. Forget the blue rinse brigade, they are all busy trying to justify their £500k + investments in a boat that rolls uncontrollably at anchor, only sails at 60 degrees upwind and you cant get off of from the stern. 😁 Thats a cracking boat and the changes you have made make real sense. I bet she is fast! Looking forward to the next instalment. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew

Well, you certainly have made some serious upgrades since you bought her; It will be interesting to see what you actually think of all your investment in a few months time. So nice and happy to see you, Patrick, you know I'm a tech man, so for me, the video was just fantastic. "Fast Lane" will require a lot of physical effort, which is great to keep you in good shape, also, it is "more connected to nature" (sorry my English), with so many things to tweak and trim to make it go fast (I remember my 19ft sailing school boat, the most sophisticated thing was a compass). With all due respect, now you became the old version of another lovely character, Hugo Picard, The sailing Frenchman, who is also dealing with that Mini full of dynnema lines. "I'll be sailing every day for the next two months..." that's one of the most enjoyable things that can happen to a guy like us. And who knows, maybe in the future we can see Alessa reaching A Coruña!!!. Thanks for the video and kind regards.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, it is clearly excellent equipment, as the vast majority of long distance racers use it. I note now that more and more 'cruisers' are using it as well. My own experience is that it maintains course in weather MUCH, MUCH better than RayMarine. The sensors and computer software are fantastic in anticipating movement and applying the corrections in a timely manner. On the 'less great' side of the ledger is that the installation process is not super user friendly. It is anything but 'plug and play'. I did mine completely by myself, and struggled, but once it was all set up, I loved it. I have since changed boats, and my new boat has Ray Marine. What a difference.... :-( -- but it's OK for cruising I guess, and much less expensive than NKE. Fair winds.

    Patrick, not boring at all. Love the technical stuff. So your NEW compass is GYRO which gives you True Heading ? So, no dull company with the virgin any more ? Is your autopilot coupled with the Gyro Compass in Heading mode and your GPS Chart Plotter in Course and Track mode ?

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha. Yes, that is the beauty, as well as the complexity of this NKE system: by pressing a couple of menu keys, you can change guidance from Gyro Compass, to True Wind, to Apparent Wind, to GPS/waypoint tracking or just 'block the tiller at a set angle' mode. It also means you need to understand all of the sensitivity calibrations of those various modes.

    Patrick, is this boat smaller than the baveria? What were your reasons for The change briefly. I’m looking to buy my first boat and I keep thinking 40ft then 32ft back again. I will probably be solo like yourself most of the time. Thanks Dave

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends what kind of sailing you plan to do David. If you plan to sail across large bodies of water/oceans, then I think the sweet spot is 38-42 feet. This is long enough and heavy enough to be fairly comfortable in 2-3 meter seas (that are common when crossing oceans), yet not too big to handle in a marina by yourself. If you plan to primarily do coastal sailing, then a 28-32 foot boat is fine. Fair winds.

    G'Day Patrick - Greetings from Wellington, New Zealand
    I hope you're recovering 150% AOK after your surgery - just saw comments on this - hope nothing serious
    Miss your videos and am excited at seeing your new yacht
    I might have missed something but would be really interested to know what happened to 'Isobel' and your reasons for letting her go (was it the typical 'the greater the size, the more the $$$' etc.?)
    I sold my Beneteau First 285 in May - miss her terribly and am now on the hunt for a new boat - looking at Beneteau First 36.7 or even a 40.7 (one of which I just missed out on)
    Time for a bigger boat while 'I still can'
    Trust you're well and Merry Xmas

      @patricklaine6958  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well hello RG! Recovering very well from my surgery. Many thanks. I'll be back out on the water mid January. As for the sale of my previous boat, it was not to save money. I watched a number of videos on the performance of those tiny 'mini transat' boats, and simply wanted to experience something like that, without going to the extreme of getting an unbearably uncomfortable 6.50 meter boat. I'll find out next Spring if my wish will be rewarded with glee or regret. :-)

    Boat name is great. I don't think you really had a choice - but that is absolutely fine ;)
    Very sensible modification with the forestay. I think you might need port and starboard running lights if you get caught out at night with no wind - you are not really supposed to use a steaming light with a tricolour.
    I hope you have a lot of fun this month getting to know your new boat.
    Self-steering gear looks awesome.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Paul. I'm embarrassed to say the (very obvious) idea for the name came from viewers, not me. I'll have to look into the light situation for clarity. The vast majority of small racing boats just have the 3 colour masthead light. I once crossed a sailboat (very, very close) at night without seeing his top of mast 3 color as it was lost in background city lights. I much prefer deck level lights, but am told that on our small boats, they are very difficult for ships to see in pitching seas. My intention when motoring was just to turn on the mid-mast steaming light in addition to the 3 colour. I'm not sure if that is legal or not......

    • @boatbuilderjon5636
      @boatbuilderjon5636 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@patricklaine6958 Colregs say tricolour for sailing , mast head and side lights when under propulsion but as they say side lights at 1m above sea level are slight worse than useless - any reflection blinds you and can only been seen my anyone else just before they run you down :-)

    Good day Patrick, I hope all is well and you've been enjoying your Bongo 28'. Your videos (and Christian Williams, but you were the first I discovered lol) infected me with the sailing bug. Having known absolutely nothing of sailing, your TH-cam contributions were both instructive and inspiring. I thought 'What the hell, why not?'. And on that premise I purchased a 1979 Tanzer 22'. My mantra has always been: "Between Google and TH-cam, one can pretty much do anything these days." I still hold to that, and witness it on a nearly daily basis. But if it weren't for the likes of yourself, there wouldn't have been that final nudge to get me on my way. For that, I thank you. This will be my second summer and the first full season with her on Georgian Bay, Lake Huron, and can't wait to see what is in store.I hope all is well, merci beaucoup!

    One small radio related remark: RG8x has better radio characteristics but it is thicker and thus has a higher minimum bend radius. So cable spaces that are OK for RG58 may bend RG8x too much. I used to brag about my RG8 (thicker yet) cable during my CB days :-)

    • @patricklaine6958

I'm interested in how this style of boat performs overnight on autopilot and how the accommodations work out.

    Hi Patrick. Really surprised that your forestay solution was only „half done“. I‘ve installed a second position for my inner forestay, the aft one is for the storm jib, the forrard one for flying a second foresail. The backing plate has a vertical lug welded onto it to take the fork of the rigging screw (turnbuckle). Doing as you‘ve done, with a single eye nut, offset to starboard, is not a good solution. Replacing the underdeck backing plate with a custom made plate would cost maybe € 100.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm considering installing a second stay as well Bill..... Will study the different ways to do this on this small boat. As to my deck reinforcement, the tension force comes from the top of the mast 15 meters away. Does a 4 cm offset at the base really make a difference? Not sure. At any rate, the previous owners for 12 years did not notice a problem with this plate arrangement, so I did this purely for peace of mind, rather than any critical design flaw. I'll watch this fixture closely nonetheless.

      That's the plan Philippe! There are already new sailors for the 2023 mini transat arriving in La Rochelle with their boats. I'll buddy with a couple of them and pick their brains on sails, NKE settings, and rigging. That said, I never intend to race. I'll still be doing long distance passages, so I want to protect the equipment, and preserve my energy ---- but I want to go faster than in the past.

    Not boring in the least. Any thought of a small extending bowsprit with an electric windlass? As I was watching, that's the plan I thought you were following, but then you went for internal reinforcement when bowsprits usually reinforce externally.
    Coincidentally, Sam Holmes Sailing has confronted several of the same issues, but he's fixed up a Cape Dory with a Yanmar diesel.
    Still, you may want to watch his solutions play out on his channel.
    Also hoping that, when you report on the high end system you've installed, you'll throw out a few ideas for intermdiate and more budgetary options as you did with your new VHS antenna. I'm on the budget end, but very interested in how your choices compare. Best wishes!

      My boat does have an extendable bowsprit Joseph, and is tied with dyneema to the bow at the waterline. However, this only provides support when I am flying the spinnaker. I reinforced in the anchor locker to provide more support for the genoa. Fair winds.

    • @patricklaine6958

      These light, fast, 'surfing' boats need a sophisticated autopilot much more than a deep draft cruiser. If you don't have one, with this kind of hull form, the boat will quickly turn sideways/broach/etc. That said, there are high performance autopilots available for much less money. Time will tell if my investment was not a good one.

Thanks for taking the time to post all of your videos for us to view and learn from your experience's.

      It's a bit of a delicate topic Rex. (If you watch my series of videos, I have woven in many of the topics you suggest.) Professional sailing instructors do not appreciate it when TH-camrs "teach" because we often teach it incorrectly, or at least not in the proper context. Thus, I try to limit my videos to 'demonstrating' my technique, rather than teaching. The best place to learn is with a sailing instructor, not on TH-cam. It's also a lot more fun that way ---- sailing up and down the coast with an instructor and 3-4 other students. It is less expensive than you might think. I started that way. :-)
