TikTok really did a bad thing on my mental health and I quit it a few months ago. I have not felt this calm around social media in at least two years. I was really shocked to see the impact a simple app can have on you.

I'm really, really happy you've found a sense of calm Maxine. I don't want to discourage or push people too firmly about *how* to behave but I do think that it's super valuable to consciously study how the things we regularly do actually make us feel and your example is a perfect one. I had a similar experience with TikTok, I would just endlessly doom scroll but it wasn't the content itself that affected me, a lot of that was like growing artists and musicians or comedians and memes - stuff that was educational, inspiring, or just funny and entertaining - it was the fact that I was sitting there k n o w i n g I had things that needed to be done but I just couldn't get off the dang app and do them, I already struggle enough as it is with executive dysfunction and adhd paralysis and TikTok just made it so much worse and t h a t is what made me hate myself. If I want content like that I'll go through yt shorts but I tend not to scroll through them and just look at the ones in my feed so it's easier to turn off 😊

Journaling just kept me in a neverending cycle of wallowing in my own depression and anxiety. You're absolutely right that it makes a person the center of their own universe, which we need far less of in this social media age.

What Natcha mentions is that it is worth the try but not something people need to feel they “should” be doing bc it varies from person to person. It did work for me, it helped me with my insomnia and managing strong, difficult emotions. It sucks that you risk demonetization by talking about a topic that affects half of the population. I'm almost 30 years old and I only just recently learned within the last couple of years, the best way to clean my vagina. What you said is exactly what I follow. And that type of information is wonderful especially for young girls because that's something I don't remember learning in sex ed. This was an awesome video Natacha! Can't wait for more 😁

Yes exactly!!! Like how messed up is it that our society is so misogynistic and patriarchal that women get PUNISHED for educating other women in feminine health issues that effect all of us. I know I didn’t learn these things in sex Ed. The worst part is this doesn’t even have anything to do with sex it’s literally no different than saying “it’s not good for your hair to shampoo everyday” yet it’s treated differently bc women are so sexualized that even talking about how to clean ourselves is considered “X-rated” it’s so gross and I have lost a lot of respect for TH-cam bc of that.

Oh my gosh on the 10,000 steps one and tracking: I got a free fitbit a few years ago and it almost immediately turned me into a monster. I'd force myself to reach a certain number of active minutes, steps (and i went for 20,000, it was taking over my entire life), even stair levels. If you tend to have obsessive thoughts and habits, I feel like health tracking is one of the most mentally damaging things you can do. It's been like two years since i took the fitbit off for good, and i still am trying to overcome the anxiety that comes with not "getting my steps in". Thanks for throwing in the graphs about #of steps and risk, that helps a lot!

Comment regarding journaling. Personally I had journaled throughout my entire life and it definitely matters WHAT one journals about. I had stages where I was angry journaling and I found that detrimental to my mental health. It put me in a perpetual victim mentality and like you, Natacha, I was losing perspective on a larger picture. After doing the science of happiness course curated online by Stanford university, I discovered the gratitude journaling. That did the opposite, it put me in a very positive mindset. These days I find the most effective way to journal for me is a combination of problem solving (aka writing out my problems and finding solutions to them by asking constructive and objective questions) and expressing gratitude. I can still be angry/sad/anxious yet I can write down some solutions to these feelings and appreciate what I already have going for me.

I think my personal bias is towards over-analysis and the biggest help for that is remember that my life is pretty inconsequential in the big scheme of all the ways I can try to help and good things I can contribute to much bigger than myself.
Sending you love and thank you for that! 🤍

I have learned the same, this is so important. Focusing on too much negative journaling can be so harmful (or at least not as beneficial). I use the Day One app and it has an "On this day" feature showing what happened a year ago on a given day which I absolutely love. It's amazing to see my growth! 🥰 It not only improves my physical and mental health, but also career and relationships indirectly. Wether it's free flow of writing or guided questions it can definitely improve how I talk to people, how to express my needs in a better way (personal and work) etc. Health has many deeper layers. Not sure how studies can actually measure this. 🤔😀

journaling is what got me out of my depression, because it helped me write down all my bad thoughts, then look at them, and realize by reading them out lout that some of my fears/insecurities were insane and didn't match reality
reading through my journal also helped me notice my own patterns and certain recurring fears/behaviors so that i could track my progress and have a better understanding of myself

@@harrie4667 ❤️ it’s rewarding when we find these tools that help us out of a bad spot. Your ability to self reflect and be aware of your thoughts is fantastic. Keep it up!

I’ve been off Facebook for over 2 years, and of TikTok for 6 months. I told myself it would be a 2 week break from Facebook, and when I tried to go back on the habit was broken and it just felt like a waste time. It has helped my mental health so much. And fun story, my therapist gave me the final push to delete TikTok, I started watching shows that I loved but hadn’t watched in awhile because I was always in a TikTok spiral. I rewatched crazy ex girlfriend. It reminded me of my love for theater/musicals, so I signed up for a musical theater dance class, and now I’m auditioning for a musical on Friday! I haven’t been in a show in 10+ years.

I absolutely love journaling. It feels like chatting with a friend to me. I find I'm much clearer-headed after getting anxious thoughts down on paper. I've also been journaling for years and it's been majorly helpful to re-read old journals. Sometimes I see patterns in my behavior and attitude that provide insight on how to help myself grow. It's a great tool if it's your cup of tea! I can totally understand how it wouldn't be for everyone, but I'm so introspective and thoughtful that it's a relief to write things down, almost like giving myself permission to stop thinking in circles.

Used to drink a Bang a day, and I bought a pitcher and measuring class.
Day by day, I lowered the amount to where now I'm only doing 150 milligrams a day before my workouts and my rest days are caffeine free

I have a hard time focusing on the good things sometimes, so journaling gives me an outlet to focus on small wins or good things that happened throughout the day. It also lets me work through harder issues that maybe I'm having within myself (like getting to the root of anxiety) or process how I could handle an argument with my partner better!
It definitely doesn't work for everyone but I personally love it! I also appreciate the tip about water. I drink usually around 2L of water and for me that's perfect! I'll drink a little more on some days obviously, but I cannot imagine drinking much more than that.

Love your balanced look at these things. I'd like to put out there that spironolactone was initially developed to help lower blood pressure in heart attack victims. It just had a bonus side-effect of reducing hormonal acne in women (I believe it lowers testosterone levels). Just be aware of that if you decide you want to take it. It's prescription based, anyway, so you'll have to discuss with a doctor. I used it for a while and it definitely did clear up my acne. However, I'm someone who has naturally low blood pressure as it is, and after a few months of use, I went off of it because I found it was making my blood pressure dip way too low. Chronic low blood pressure can have serious health implications. I didn't want to risk organ failure just for clear skin on my face. I'm sure it's perfectly safe for people whose blood pressure is usually in normal ranges, though.

Hey, because of the journaling topic, I LOVED the book „5 people you will meet in heaven“, it is not even Christian although the title is heaven. It was such a mind opening thing for me, showing me the bigger picture in life. A really good short read. Definitely a recommendation!
The worst self help advice or habit I had was; excessively watching self improvement stuff and being so overwhelmed that I procrastinated all the time. Didn’t even started learning or doing sport or something else. All the time someone would just pop up in my feed and tell me THE ULTIMATE solution to this and that. My cure for all the things these self help dudes and girls tried to overcome (procrastination, motivation problems, wasting time, …) was to quit all of it and just chill. Do the work I have to do, even if I’m doing it totally wrong according to the newest studies (that are going to be debunked) I am still doing something.

Omg I feel the same way about journaling! My biggest issue is with anxiety and overthinking, so journaling just makes me feel like I'm focusing so much on myself and not the bigger picture. I prefer to talk my anxieties out with my loved ones, or workout/do yoga (to help get me back in my body and out of my head) - which help my mental health much more than journaling ever has. Spot on video again Natacha xx
