And then New England walked in (didn't colonize the land but the 1800s saw huge Portuguese and azorean immigration to the areas due to the whaling boom)
Nope, when it's translate to the local language (Tetun) is; "Timor-Lorosa'e", which Timor/Timur=east, loro=sun, sa'e=up,rise, mean; the land of the rising sun in the east.
Kind of off topic, but a fusion restaurant mixing the flavours of Portugal & all its ex-colonies (incl. the Kristangs of Malacca & Bombay Catholics) would be delicious. Call it "Ultramar"
@lunalingo4461 I'm not a great cook, but it's part of a wider pipe dream if I ever win the lottery, including restaurants with other combinations e.g. one fusing Italian, Libyan, Somali, Eritrean & Ethiopian cuisine (pork or no pork? that would be interesting)
The People have two official languages, Portuguese (which is used primarily in News station and official letter) and Tetun (which kinda weird language combining Portuguese, Indonesian and the Native language)
They have difficulties when arriving in Portugal because of language barriers, google says 25% speak Portuguese but idk how true it is, they mostly like us tho because we help them.
For those Americans who had never heard of East Timor, search “Henry Kissinger East Timor” There’s a reason why you don’t know it, and it’s because the US funded killing of 200,000 people is something they’d prefer you not remember.
it’s an incredibly underdeveloped country as a result with very little opportunities. there are countless cases-like LEGAL cases-the east timorese have tried to file against the mining companies absolutely destroying their country, but there literally aren’t enough literate or educated people for them to defend themselves.
Americans would learn so much by looking up "Henry Kissinger" followed by any global south country, especially in SEA and Latin America (Chile, Argentina, Cambodia, South Vietnam, East Timor etc...) the Nixon-Kissinger regime was one of the most vile and disgusting to date
First time I heard of East Timor was a few years ago cuz I was an Immigration Officer and the person came to me with what I thought was a fake passport/made up country. So I Google the country and I'm like wow, I've never heard of there before. They didn't even need a visa
Regarding East Timor, I'll never forget reading the 2001 book 'A Dirty Little War' by Australian journalist John Martinkus about the secret war Indonesia was waging against the fledgling nation of East Timor - a war that eventually erupted and led to Australia's troops being called in so that the East Timorese could finally claim their independence. After reading about what the Indonesian-backed local militias did to their own people, to be honest I could happily have strung them up, but the East Timorese leader Xanana Gusmao said 'as Catholics, we must forgive them.' Despite what they'd been through, they were able to send three athletes to the 2000 Sydney Olympics, competing as 'Independent Olympic Athletes' because they didn't yet have a national Olympic committee. 🇹🇱
So, the geopolitical meme-space has been abuzz with this country as of late. Almost as if someone famous that had something to do with this relatively obscure country’s history died or something. But we all know Geography Now isn’t political at all…. Guess we’ll never know. 😉😉
You have the names wrong of 2 of those. Cabo Verde, not Cape Verde Timor-Leste not East Timor Essentially what you're doing is the same as me making a video about the USA states of Green Mountain, Flowery, Red Island and Mountainous. If I WERE to write about them, I'd put their ACTUAL names, Vermont, Florida, Rhode Island and Montana. Similar to how I'd say I watched a video on GeographyNow. I wouldn't say I watched it on DirtDrawingNow. Especially because, given that Cabo Verde is the official name in English, and is the Portuguese for Cape Green, you should either say Cabo Verde, or if you do insist on translation, go for Cape Green. Which would mean instead of talking about their capital Praia, you'll need to call it Beach, as that's what it means
You got it all wrong man. Yes Brazil would be dominant if the party but Angola would in with everyone . Even more that Portugal. Ask me and people who really know how it is. Angola gets along with everyone and is the life of the party among the Portuguese speaking countries. 😊😊😊😊😊
Describing the relationship between a colonial power and some of its former victims who had to fight and die for their freedom, as a family, is really weird l.
Imagine if we, the Portuguese, were still crying about what the Italians (aka the Roman empire) did to us! I bet you're from one of those young countries that are still trying to blame their shortcomings on others while forgetting that even the language you speak most likely came from them. Yes, 200 years is a young country.
@ Literally what harm did the Roman Empire do to you? Extract taxes? It’s completely incomparable to what your people did to the Angolans. And no, I am from the United States, the wealthiest county on the planet.
And then Macau comes in and turns wveryone into gambling addicts.
He's more likely to win all their money rather than getting them hooked on it 🤣
You beat me to exactly this sentiment
Lol the problem is, there’s only like 10 people left that speak Portuguese in Macau

I remember learning that only a small percentage speaks Portuguese nowadays even though it's an official language.
Another official language is Tetum/Tetun.
