  • Hostility against France in their former West African colonies has hit an all-time high. In Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger the pushback has been angry, messy and noisy. This week Talk Africa explores the genesis of anti-French sentiment in Francophone West Africa, how it’s playing out, its geopolitical context, the likely outcomes for the wider Sahel region, and what the future may hold for France-Africa relations.

@tkk3852 Yes!! Support Niger. This is all about Uranium and Niger waking up and deciding not to just give away the uranium/gas to France. France is making a stance about resources that are Not even theirs. I love how social media is not allowing them Western country and Euro to Control the Narrative any longer.

The backlash against the French in Africa is more than understandable. What is also needed is a backlash against France from the diaspora and others in Europe and the US. There should be protests outside every French embassy telling France to GTF out of Africa. There should also be protests in France itself. Good people who stand by and watch while others do bad things are essentially complicit.

As an Anglophone Cameroonian, I feel it when my fellow Cameroonian on the panel there (David Otto-Endeley) says that the French 'brand' in Africa has become so toxic. We have one of the world's longest-serving (40 years in office) and one of the oldest in terms of age (Biya is 90!) and most Cameroonians believe he has been kept in office so long because he serves France and not even Cameroon. While we are not likely to see a coup in Biya's lifetime, our fear is that his prolonged stay in power will leave a vacuum and tussle for power which like in Niger, the military will take advantage of , sadly. Yes, African leaders must start serving Africans and not getting rich and being in the good books of their Western 'masters' at the expense of the masses. Very healthy discussion, though Mr. Toker kept rambling and never saying anything concrete in my opinion bc he came across as a French apologist

I get your point and well said to an extent. I totally agree with what you said about old president Biya. However, achieving true independence must start from a grassroots level. And thus, you must start by properly decolonizing yourself mentally. As you mentioned " as a Anglophone Cameroonian " I put it to you that you are a Cameroonian and a African, period! Why do you guys in Cameroon and French speaking African countries choose to degrade yourselves publicly by categorising yourselves as 'Francophone' and 'Anglophone' frankly I find it absolutely pathetic. And I'm sure most independently thinking Africans will like my comment and agree with me. Subsequently, that's why this comment will get more likes than your comment.

Saving you from yourselves may have been the justification at the time, but the world has changed drastically since then in its knowledge and understanding. Today, it’s about making money, which is no different than your objective. I agree that African nations have the short end of the stick and arrangements to renegotiate agreements should be happening to increase African countries stake, but as we see even in the U.S., it takes money to make money. African countries appear not to have the infrastructure to achieve and maintain independence and still feed their people. It is incredibly naive to think that whoever infuses capital into these countries isn’t going to do it without also taking control. Lofty platitudes are wonderful soundbites but unless there is financing, nothing can happen.

    • @ItopaAl

@@ninadaly7639 I really do think you miss the nature of western capitalist imperialism and the reality of what they term loan or infusion of capital into a system it already robs from in tangible material terms and presumes its printed paper fiat currency is apt compensation; which it would never have been (not by a long shot) if it weren't for a plethora of armtwisting institutions it'd set up as coercive, punitive, and subversive instruments. That said, it is also erroneous to suppose the brigand's code of "if not me then someone else would have cooked your goose" applies to everyone. Some cultures trade, you know, and there is a natural code of justice and ethics which, albeit enshrined in the constitutions of even western cultures, they conveniently overlook when dealing with other people. My take is that the western people have been held hostage by their oligarchs which they willingly fed to become the devourers they are today by being weaned on illusions of their collective superiorty over others. For them, it is a clash of cultures - a them versus us mentality - while on the other hand, we don't have that luxury, but seek not to be extinguished as a people, either literally or figuratively.

Today, let's ask the United States when and by whom it was chosen that it should send weapons to other countries that are at war, but the countries are not required. I have settled this question because he and his puppets are sent to armed countries in war or help one side and then if the other country does that, they bring arguments that they are not supposed to do the things that they are doing. I travel to France and the United States.

I think everyone wants each country to take charge of their own destiny, but what does this mean? I could be wrong here, but the main complaint of the coup leaders seems to be corruption and not benefitting enough from the natural resources. Both or these cause the country remain poor, but each one could have been dealt with through the democratic legislature. As for the natural resources, there are really two options: 1) put a higher tax on the companies that mine the resources and use the revenue to to improve the livelihoods of the citizens, or 2) take government control over some or all o the mining options and use the sales to create social programs to benefit the citizens (the government could also pay the citizens a small annual stipend bases off of sales). As for the corruption claims, there should be an arm of the government that investigates these claims and brings the perpetrators to justice in the court system. Without these measure, the country will always be poor and in a start of chaos. Just keep in mind that using terms like economic imbalance doesn't solve the problem. You have to have a clearly defined problem before you can solve the issues.

It's funny, that you even ask that question, Iraq is still occupied by NATO, you've been stealing their oil for 20 years, Iraq told you many times to get lost.. But like always, they West don't care about anyone, they only care about their own interests...

Let them decide their destiny as free people and whatever they do with their freedom is none of anyone's business.
