    Rush has second to none the most loyal fanbase in the world. As a reward they just kept getting better and better like a fine wine. Innovative, creative and the most talented trio ever to grace the face of the earth. Their music may not be for everyone but to us rush fans it has to be listened to regularly. Working Man--Live in Cleveland is a must see. Boys just having a lot of fun and putting smiles on peoples faces. 👍👍👍👍👍

    My favourite Neil Peart drum solo is from waaay back in 1976 on Rush's first live album All The World's a Stage. The song starts with Working Man and transitions into Finding My Way then back to Working Man, and Neil Peart's solo. Fifteen minutes of awesomeness.🎸🎸🥁

    Rush were the forerunners of heavy prog, heavy progressive music hence their constant evolution and some fans prefer their 70's period to their 80's which was more keyboard orientated but most critics will say that the 1981 album Moving Pictures is one of the most perfect rock albums ever made, it's flawless and has something for everyone

    All the members of Rush were raised in and around the Toronto, Canada area. YYZ (and yes, it's "zed". They're Canadian, eh) is the airport code for Toronto Pearson International Airport. When they saw those letters on their luggage they knew they were headed home. The rhythm at the beginning of the song is based on the airport's Morse code transponder signal for the letters YYZ.
    The only times I have ever experienced a crowd singing along with an instrumental have been at Rush concerts. The crowd at this show in Rio topped 80,000 and was the largest live audience they would ever play to. The largest crowds I was personally a part of was around 20,000 at The Gore at George in Washington state. In his book "Ghost Rider: Travels On the Healing Road" Neil mentions that the show at The Gorge Amphitheatre was, up to that time, the largest crowd they had ever played to. But oh to have been in Rio just to experience that energy being exchanged between the band and the audience. That it was an exchange of energy, not one side giving and the other side taking, that made a Rush show so special. It saddens me that you'll never get to have that experience.
    Other Rush instrumentals you might consider would include: "La Villa Strangiato"; "Where's My Thing"; "Leave That Thing Alone"; "The Main Monkey Business" and "Malignant Narcissism"

    Only a South American (or maybe an English) crowd could turn an instrumental into a sing-along!!
    Harri, Neil got 9 minutes a little later in the show with his own drum solo called O Baterista - check it, it was great! Back in the 80's, they would shoe-horn a solo into YYZ (see Exit...Stage Left album), but since the 90's, they would play the song uninterrupted and give Neil his time to shine separately.
    Band and crowd - OFF THE CHAIN!

    RUSH had been together 40 plus years. They started out as more of a heavy rock band then into progressive rock then more new wave then more sophisticated heavy rock. Rush does that to you. The more you listen the more you get pulled in. This is actually pronounced YYZED as that is the way we say it in Canada just like Britain. YYZED is the airport code for Toronto where they are from. The beginning if you hear it Neil play the Morse Code for YYZED at the beginning of the song. One of my favourite Rush songs is Bytor and the Snow Dog of off their second album. Just a FYI I when Rush started out they had a different drummer but he was having some heath issues and left the band. Neil was working in his dad's auto part shop. He had just come back from England trying to get into a band there without success. The manager for Rush had heard of Neil and asked him to audition. Needless to say he got the job with just two weeks to learn all the songs as they were going on tour and yes he did!

    This concert footage is from the end of their 2002 Vapor Trails tour. I saw them twice on this tour in the States. They are each about 48/49 years old here and have been playing together since 1974 when they were in their early 20's. Their last tour was in 2015 and they had since retired as a band. Then with the passing of drummer Neil Peart in January 2020 it officially closed the book on Rush.

  • @matthewhoag2609
    @matthewhoag2609 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yeah that Rio crowd -actually singing along to an instrumental! As far as style, they went through many changes over the years - I think you really have to if you want it stay relevant for 40 years. They started with some Zeppelin and maybe Sabbath roots, were usually on the heavy end, but always progressive. They got very creative with long-form epic pieces like 2112. After that they moved into shorter, more traditional prog rock and brought us some of their best, like Tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio. The mid to late 80’s brought the synths to the forefront, reflecting the popular music of the time, but still with that progressive angle that Rush brings. Early 90’s, the synths moved to the background, and Alex brought some varied guitar sounds to the mix. From ‘96 to the end there were a lot of driving guitar and bass parts. It’s quite the ride over the years, and they sometimes changed before fans were ready, but they always kept it fresh. Here’s a good sampling from the different eras:
    Early days- Working Man, Fly by Night
    Prog Rock - 2112, A Farewell to Kings
    Early 80’s - Freewill, Red Barchetta
    Late 80’s - New World Man, Time Stand Still
    Early 90’s - Roll the Bones, Animate
    Late 90’s - Far Cry, One Little Victory.

    It surprised me a bit that you didn't twig to the fact that the crowd was "singing" along to the instrumental and knew all the "words" by heart. LOL
    I agree with you that the Brazilian crowds are awesome. I'd go as far as to say they are the best in the world even though I've been amond a few really excellent crowds. Best for me was the crowd at the YES concert at Massey Hall in Toronto a year or so before Chris Squire died. They were excellent and the band seem to, one, notice and, two, really appreciate it!!

    Only Rush can make Morse code sound good. YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near Rush's hometown. The band was introduced to the rhythm as Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport. A VHF omnidirectional range system at the airport broadcasts the YYZ identifier code in Morse code. Peart said in interviews later that the rhythm stuck with them. Peart and Geddy Lee have both said "It's always a happy day when YYZ appears on our luggage tags

    Rush kept evolving their sound. Next album not meant to be like previous, from 1974 to 2015. Experimental at times. Some fans divided over different eras, some disliking the synth era. Some joined in the synth era, and unaware of most of the back catalogue, except the core live repertoire .

    The intro is the Morse code for YYZ airport, their home , that pilots must identify, by law, on approach to any airport. Neil heard the Morse code from the cabin of the private jet and the rest is history as they say.
    It’s called ATIS, Automated Airport Information System. The tape is changed every hour with weather, barometric pressure and I believe field elevation. When crews first contact a tower by radio they will tell the controller they have ATIS. Especially in Canada, the CAA (Canadian FAA) are regulatory pricks that are always layout stupid regulations that no other nations require. But I digress.

    • @phillee2814
      @phillee2814 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ATIS is Automated Terminal Information System, and is identified by letter, each day starting with "Information Alpha" and a fresh oe is issued every hour OR if conditions change significantly during that hour. If it changes a loot during the 24hrs, and they get past information zulu, they just go back to the beginning, but miss out information alpha if it is after 23:00 hrs, as that would mean the information letter code would not change at midnight.
      The airport identier beacon is separate and is only needed for instrument approaches, and THAT is the one which identifies the airport in morse. it is not required for VFR (Visual Flight Rules) approaches. I'm sure it is fairly obvious why it is required for instrument approaches though - landing at the wrong airport is at the very least embarrassing and can be dangerous - the wrong airport may not have sufficient runway length, for example, and having to leave the airport by road can get very expensive if the aircraft can be stopped but does not have enough space to leave again! Dismantling an aircraft to carry it a few miles to the correct ddesination on trucks is not cheap. The FOUR letter codes are issued by the ICAO or International Civil Aviation Organisation, and are, in most countries, confusingly and unnecessarily different to those used by IATA, the International Airline Transport Association, which use the three letter codes you see on baggage tags. Not in Canada though - they usually just strip the first letter "C" from the four letter ICAO code to create the three letter IATA code. The FULL designator for Toronto Pearson International Airport, as used in their morse code radio beacon, is CYYZ, which makes me slightly dubious about the story of Neil hearing it on approach in an aircraft and adopting it as a dum rhythm. It is a nice story, but doesn't work.
      For some reason, Canadians, uniqiuely, seem fairly attached to their local airport codes, and they are used as domestic shorhand for the cities even in the non-flying community, or those who fly only by virtue of being self-loading cargo. But ATIS is totally different. Both VFR and IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) approaches need to have obtained the latest ATIS information.
      Nearly all regulatory requirements of Transport Canada (Not CAA - That is the UK's Civil Aviation Authority) are written in in the blood of those whose crashes resulted in the regulation, and often the FAA is negisgent in ignoring the recommendations of the NTSB in implementing them - if NTSB recommendations had been folllowed when they were first called for, the helicopter crash that took Kobe Bryant and his daughter along with 6 other passengers and the pillot would not have happened. I was listening to the NTSB board meeting when they verbally ripped the FAA a new one over that, although politics prevent it being in the final report. They do, however, include a section in their report "Previously Issued Recommendations Classified and Reiterated in This Report" which I guess is as much of a spanking they dared give the FAA in a public ducument.
      But then most countries separate promotion and regulation in their regulatory bodies.
      Combining both in the FAA has given it a uniquely schizophrenic nature, where it counts lives in dollars (and, in a frankly horrifying revelation in that NTSB meeting, can't do basic arithmetic).
      And Yes, I have an FAA airman's certificate and a UK CAA Pilots licence.

    If you want to dip your toes into something a bit heavier you should do Painkiller by Judas Priest. I would be interested for your reaction.
