As you listen, keep in mind that this a group of 3. Unbelievable. They played together for 43 years, and remain the best of friends (RIP Neil Peart). No egos, and the utmost respect for their fans - AKA The Rush Army. Cheers.

Talent at its best. My favourite Rush performance ( recorded in Montreal,1981). Bravo sir for reacting and appreciating this incredible band .. Their transitions are legendary..The greatest band in history! Neil (RIP), Geddy, Alex, WE SALUTE YOU !!!!!!!!!!!

The multitasking to pull this off is incredible. Geddy’s bass actually has a 12-string on the bottom. It’s a Rickenbacker 4080/12. He plays it from Alex’s solo to the end - wish the video showed it better. Also wish it showed them playing synth with the pedals better. Rewind to where Geddy first starts singing - he’s playing those synth tones while on bass and singing! The critics often didn’t understand Rush and called them pretentious and over-complex, but 40 years of packed shows tell a different story. Early on they did many multi-part, story driven epics like this. You will have to do 2112, but do the studio version with lyrics so you can follow the story. Cheers!

Well said!! It is so hard for people to truly get a grasp of the level of musicianship here. Rush live is amazing. Three virtuosos. Not to mention the creativity in the lyrics and musical compositions. Over a 40 yr career span. Adapting, refining, reinventing, throughout the decades. I am so glad they are finally getting the recognition they deserve.

Geddy and The Professor are great musicians and Alex Lifeson is a criminally underrated guitarist.

  • @tencentwonders
    @tencentwonders 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The bass Geddy is playing there is a Rickenbacker 4080/12, which is a 4-string bass on top and a 12-string guitar on the bottom. Geddy also has a 4 string bass/6 string guitar doubleneck, but it's more of an ivory/cream color.
Geddy has pictures of both his book about his bass collection. About the 4080/12, he says this "I called Rickenbacker for help, and its reps provided me with this 4080 bass and twelve-string guitar, which now has a good many miles on it. Built in November 1976, it was one of the earliest doubleneck bass/twelve-strings produced by RIC. It now resides at the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa."

The song is based upon a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge's 1816 poem, Kubla Khan. You'll see Geddy playing the six string electric beneath his bass from around 15:33 to 15:43. Great reaction Harri. You're the best. Cheers.

@@rattan3793 You're absolutely right. I just remembered that when I saw them on this tour, I initially thought his lower guitar was a six string until a friend told me that half of the strings went through the head and the other tuning pegs were on the back of the head. My bad. I did see him play the one with the six string once. I think it was on the Moving Pictures Tour. Good catch.

  • @debbieplato5107

Yeah! More Rush!! I actually prefer this performance over the album. You are on track about the lyrics. It is about Xanadu a mythical place where you gain immortality. The person who gains these actually ends up regretting his immortality. Yes, that is a bass and a guitar that Geddy Lee is playing. The critics and the radio managers didn't like their music. They also said the same thing about Led Zeppelin. Both bands did not conform! The eventually did get inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame and earned a lot of awards here in Canada including being presented with the order of Canada. Not only for their musical contributions but also their charity work.
Alex Lifeson guitar and bass pedals
Geddy Lee bass, keyboards, vocals, taurus pedals.
    Neil Peart drums and percussion.
Three very humble funny and mutitalented guys. You should check out A dinner with Rush and also their acceptance speech for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Groovy Shirt you are wearing! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦✌

Over the next 30yrs I must have seen every big name is rock and blues. I was lucky enough to have been in a area with several concert venues. Times sure change though, ticket prices went from 9.50 to $150.00 , still great memories.

On your comment about Rush's success. They were not critically heralded by critics. They were most definitely successful. Coming from someone who has seen them about ten times in concert they were at their best in concert and on tour. Their music was very faithfully reproduced by the guys and I was never disappointed. They were just some of the most down to earth and unpretentious guys. They knew their place in the world and did what they did to try to enhance it. No controversies or damaged hotel rooms. Just quiet professionalism. I miss them so I have turned to watching their performances and reactions again and again and again and I just can't get enough. I appreciate your honest reaction. Listen to "The Garden" listed on TH-cam as "Rush - Clockwork Angels Tour - The Garden
". This was the last song on their last album by the best band ever. You will not be disappointed.

They weren't party animals, as was fashionable in their era. They instead focused on improving, innovating, using their musicality and storytelling to speak to us.
Alex Lifeson is the guitarist. He is vastly underrated. All three were top tier musicians, and should be mentioned in conversations about the greatest in their respective talents.
They finally made it into the Hall of Fame, far too long they waited for the recognition that they had earned.

Of course it's impressive how many different instruments these guys played in one song. It struck me recently that Neil Peart experienced a completely different version of many Rush songs than the rest of us. We all hear the drums, xylophone, temple blocks, and tubular bells. There are several times when Neil is running the sticks across metal chimes, wood chimes, triangles and such where the rest of us have no chance to hear it - even on the studio version. They are there to enrich his personal enjoyment. Some time I'd like to hear a song like this remixed to be from his perspective. Only then would I know how Neil intended it to be heard.

Rush was a musicians band. If you know music, you can't help but love their accomplishments. Alex Lifeson (the guitarist) is easily a top 10 player but the band was not pop oriented so he doesn't get the credit he deserves. The three of them were/are amazing people who formed an amazing product. It took forever for them to get into the rock and roll Hall of Fame and that became a joke. It was a prejudice against progressive rock. This was no doubt the reason Lifeson gave his "Blah-blah" acceptance speech when they were finally admitted. The Hall of Fame and Rolling Stone had lost credibility by ignoring them.

To stand within the Pleasure Dome
    Decreed by Kublai Khan
To taste anew the fruits of life
    The last immortal man
To find the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice
Oh, I will dine on honeydew
And drink the milk of Paradise
    Oh, paradise!
A thousand years have come and gone but time has passed me by
    Stars stopped in the sky
    Frozen in an everlasting view
Waiting for the world to end, weary of the night
    Praying for the light
    Prison of the lost
    Xanadu
    Xanadu
    Held within the Pleasure Dome
    Decreed by Kublai Khan
    To taste my bitter triumph
    As a mad immortal man
    Nevermore shall I return
    Escape these caves of ice
For I have dined on honeydew
And drunk the milk of Paradise
    Whoa, is it paradise

To understand the story, you need a little historical background. Victorian England developed a fascination for " Eastern " mythology and mysticism. Collerage tells a story of a man seeking such a mystical place , Xanadu, allegedly created by orders from Kublai Khan, Xanadu is the location where Immortality is said to be found. In the song the protagonist eventually finds Xanadu, but Immortality is not the blessing he believed it would be, he lives forever, stuck in Xanadu , alone.

love your enthusiasm, but you gotta let the video finish! it was only a few seconds, but the way they finish with a touch of a delay is a key part of the ending! always let a Rush video completely finish, or you just might miss something! lol

Saw tons of famous folks in the vicinity. 😊 Some even eat at Subway like us regular folks.🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
