People were so weirded-out by their relationship. Two emotionally damaged people connecting. She had a warped view of love because of her parents and he was emotionally stunted for whatever reason. But he was also adult enough not to let the relationship get physical. He needed someone to care about and she needed someone to care about her. It worked as weird as it was.
In the director's cut, it's said that Leon fell in love with a girl in France. When her father found out about their relationship, he murdered his daughter in a rage. Leon then shot the father to avenger her, which is why he immigrated to New York and started his life as a hitman. Yes, Leon is every bit as stunted and traumatized as Mathilde, and theirs is a unique love story: one not based on sex, but genuine emotion.
Well, if you take the movie as it is, I agree. However, Natalie has said in interviews that her parents objected to some aspects of the script that they felt were inappropriate and were subsequently changed. So, all in all, we have to be thankful that the movie was produced in America. Anyone familiar with French cinema knows what I mean.

Despite Matilda's crush on him, Leon never took advantage. He was an honorable man. What sealed their relationship as the father/daughter type for me was the scene in Stansfield's office when he rescues her (yet again) and they hug ... and then we see their shoes as the camera pans down. Natalie Portman’s first movie out of the gate and she proved what a great actress she is. She definitely held her own alongside Jean Reno and Gary Oldman.
Always loved this movie. I invited my friends over to watch it bec they know I dig up movies they have never heard or seen. They were blown away. So underrated. You have great taste and eye for solid legit films.
Great movie for sure. My one gripe about this reaction compilation is that nearly every single one that is featured called it a ring when Leon gave dude the "gift" from Mathilda and that just irks me lol. It's a pain, not a ring and I wanna smack some of these reactors for it
The only reason I can come up with, as to why some people get the wrong idea about Leon and Matilda, is they can't read facial expressions or body language! Because in every scene, it's written all over his face and in his body language, Leon is, INCREDIBLY!!!, uncomfortable, every time Matilda says, or does something inappropriate; hell, half the time he's choking on his milk and practically falling out of his chair. This film is a masterclass in acting, Natalie Portman delivers a performance any actor would be envious of, amazing debut! Gary is so manic, and pushes the boundaries, between unhinged and campy/cheesy, since he's so over the top, but always is restrained enough, to keep from going quite that far. And lastly, Jean Reno, does not get nearly enough credit, he's brilliant in an almost silent role, selling everything with looks, mannerisms, gestures and presence.
The muzzle flash was unbelievable. I loved how the director went that route. We'd already seen many killings right in our face. He could've easily had blown the brains right in our face. This was epic 🤯. RIP Leon 😪

Leon knew Stansfield was behind him. After unaliving that many police, they would be constantly hunted. By letting Stansfield get him, the cops would be more likely to give up looking for her. He freed her from a life of being a fugitive, while still getting payback. Very similar to Road to Perdition.
And to clarify. We see from Leons eyes as he breaths his first breath of freedom. Stansfield raises the gun. The flash. You don't hear the shot that gets you. Leon pulls the pin off the grenade. As he's lying there, bleeding out. He's been shot. His left hand grasped the grenades. Stansfield grabs his left hand. Lein grabs stansfields hand with his ( Leon's ) right hand. Thus is when he pulls the pin. Places it in stansfields hand.thus is from Mayltilda. She got her wish. Her little brother is avenged. Stansfield is dead. In a warriors last breath. He should still have the sense to exicute 1 final blow.
Mathilda had the hots for Leon, as she was emotionally well beyond her years, but in a puppydog, first love kind of way. It was a "grown, sexual, sensual relationship" to her, but his was first a view of annoyance, and then acceptance, and then protective love for "family." This was all discussed openly in the press in the days of making and then screening the film. It was only years later (after Natalie Portman toke a woke pill), that people started thinking that an honest portrayal of a relationship between broken humans was somehow a bad thing. She played a slightly older version of the same theme in Beautiful Girls, with an all star cast.

She was obviously a kid, a kid who suffered living in a toxic family and suffering horrid trauma (her family's murder by cops), and who also sexualized her "concept of love" for the first male who seemed to show her any love. I absolutely love the scene where Mathilda propositions Leon because the way he turns her down is brilliantly written. The natural response of "you're a child and I'm an adult" wouldn't have worked on her - she already doesn't care about that because her view of life and love is so skewed by her upbringing. Instead, Leon gets vulnerable with her despite being very uncomfortable and tells her he wouldn't be any good at what she wants from him. And she lets it go immediately. Fucking brilliant. It's too bad that scene is only included in the director's cut. It really makes their dynamic much more comprehensible.
I read that Reno made sure that Leon and Matilda's relations like father and his daughter prior filming. It seems weird that she sees Leon as her crush, but Leon didn't take advantage of Matilda when she was vulnerable.
Reno was an amazing actor and would understand his character's beliefs and character. That people deny that in the moment, and after what she has suffered, Mathilda seems drawn to love and wants to live it the only way she's learned to express it kind of annoys me, and has for decades. She grew up in a crime family and neighborhood. The only love she sees is sexual, she is having feelings, and in the heat of the moment, wants to dive into them.

It’s crazy how others can influence your perspective on situations in hindsight. When I first saw this movie, I never got the creepy vibe the lead’s relationship. I always thought the Leon character became appropriately uncomfortable when Matilda would act a certain way around him. I just honestly thought Matilda was influenced by her environment and had an incorrect view of how to love someone. That’s why I thought it was ironic that Leon, not having any experience in love, was the one that was able to correct Matilda on the subject as he was able to grasp it himself.

Unfortunately, there are people who see in this film only the story of a criminal who gave champagne to a 12-year-old girl and once even slept with her in the same bed. I am ashamed of such people and I feel sorry for them.
Im pretty sure by the time he talks to Mathilda and gets shot from behind, Leon was already dying and knew it. He took several rounds center mass when he popped out to shoot the tactical dudes outside the room and would most likely have bled out very soon. That goodbye to her and the walk out was to finish the fight so she could be free from getting hunted

Leon needs something to love and care for, other than a plant, and Mathilda needs someone to love (and love her) but, because of her dysfunctional home life we get to see, she mistakes sexual love for the actual love she needs. I'm gonna buck the trend here: IMO Leon *did* fall in love romantically with Mathilda. His face when she dressed up as Marilyn Monroe was not that of a father, and then there's her comments that would make him spit up his milk. You saw Leon explain he had lost his girlfriend at 19 and has been lost all these years, and then he met Mathilda. But he *knew* that her age was the deal breaker, so he behaved himself. It was when he knew he literally had minutes to live that he held her face tenderly and confessed his love. She knew *exactly* what he meant by it, looked him in the eye, and returned the sentiment. I'd even bet that the director considered having them kiss but that audiences would think that was a step too far. Natalie Portman's parents were horrified at the idea of such an individual being the film's anti-hero. The actor who played Leon was also disgusted and refused to do the more intimate scene in the film. He threatened to walk out unless that aspect of his character's was removed. Plus, Reno stated to director of this movie, relation between Leon and Matilda is traditional father and his daughter. Yes, he stated that was Leon's motivation, as that character's actor. Meanwhile, the Other Lead character, not supporting, was seeking a sexualized relationship as she did not yet learn the difference between types of love, i.e. like most young loves, love must equal sexual desire. People were so weirded-out by their relationship. Two emotionally damaged people connecting. She had a warped view of love because of her parents and he was emotionally stunted for whatever reason. But he was also adult enough not to let the relationship get physical. He needed someone to care about and she needed someone to care about her. It worked as weird as it was.
In the director's cut, it's said that Leon fell in love with a girl in France. When her father found out about their relationship, he murdered his daughter in a rage. Leon then shot the father to avenger her, which is why he immigrated to New York and started his life as a hitman. Yes, Leon is every bit as stunted and traumatized as Mathilde, and theirs is a unique love story: one not based on sex, but genuine emotion.
Well, if you take the movie as it is, I agree. However, Natalie has said in interviews that her parents objected to some aspects of the script that they felt were inappropriate and were subsequently changed. So, all in all, we have to be thankful that the movie was produced in America. Anyone familiar with French cinema knows what I mean.

Natalie Portman’s first movie out of the gate and she proved what a great actress she is. She definitely held her own alongside Jean Reno and Gary Oldman.
I watched Leon dozens of times and every time there was hope that he would reach the exit and find Matilda.
Always loved this movie. I invited my friends over to watch it bec they know I dig up movies they have never heard or seen. They were blown away. So underrated. You have great taste and eye for solid legit films.
Great movie for sure. My one gripe about this reaction compilation is that nearly every single one that is featured called it a ring when Leon gave dude the "gift" from Mathilda and that just irks me lol. It's a pain, not a ring and I wanna smack some of these reactors for it

The only reason I can come up with, as to why some people get the wrong idea about Leon and Matilda, is they can't read facial expressions or body language! Because in every scene, it's written all over his face and in his body language, Leon is, INCREDIBLY!!!, uncomfortable, every time Matilda says, or does something inappropriate; hell, half the time he's choking on his milk and practically falling out of his chair. This film is a masterclass in acting, Natalie Portman delivers a performance any actor would be envious of, amazing debut! Gary is so manic, and pushes the boundaries, between unhinged and campy/cheesy, since he's so over the top, but always is restrained enough, to keep from going quite that far. And lastly, Jean Reno, does not get nearly enough credit, he's brilliant in an almost silent role, selling everything with looks, mannerisms, gestures and presence.
The muzzle flash was unbelievable. I loved how the director went that route. We'd already seen many killings right in our face. He could've easily had blown the brains right in our face. This was epic 🤯. RIP Leon 😪

Leon knew Stansfield was behind him. After unaliving that many police, they would be constantly hunted. By letting Stansfield get him, the cops would be more likely to give up looking for her. He freed her from a life of being a fugitive, while still getting payback. Very similar to Road to Perdition.
Good take, the director said this ending was the reason why he did exactly that, to give her the life she deserved

Mathilda had the hots for Leon, as she was emotionally well beyond her years, but in a puppydog, first love kind of way. It was a "grown, sexual, sensual relationship" to her, but his was first a view of annoyance, and then acceptance, and then protective love for "family." This was all discussed openly in the press in the days of making and then screening the film. It was only years later (after Natalie Portman toke a woke pill), that people started thinking that an honest portrayal of a relationship between broken humans was somehow a bad thing. She played a slightly older version of the same theme in Beautiful Girls, with an all star cast.
I don't know if you've seen the whole movie or just fragments. It's one of the best movies of the 90's, the connection between the characters is so special that it moves you emotionally.

I absolutely love the scene where Mathilda propositions Leon because the way he turns her down is brilliantly written. The natural response of "you're a child and I'm an adult" wouldn't have worked on her - she already doesn't care about that because her view of life and love is so skewed by her upbringing. Instead, Leon gets vulnerable with her despite being very uncomfortable and tells her he wouldn't be any good at what she wants from him. And she lets it go immediately. Fucking brilliant. It's too bad that scene is only included in the director's cut. It really makes their dynamic much more comprehensible.
When you hate a movie vilain that much, that tells you how great the actor is.

I read that Reno made sure that Leon and Matilda's relations like father and his daughter prior filming. It seems weird that she sees Leon as her crush, but Leon didn't take advantage of Matilda when she was vulnerable.
Reno was an amazing actor and would understand his character's beliefs and character. That people deny that in the moment, and after what she has suffered, Mathilda seems drawn to love and wants to live it the only way she's learned to express it kind of annoys me, and has for decades. She grew up in a crime family and neighborhood. The only love she sees is sexual, she is having feelings, and in the heat of the moment, wants to dive into them.
What kind of man would he have been if he had? He knew what she was feeling & did not. His own feelings were in turmoil as he had pretty much cut himself off from emotion to cope with his job. She reawakening his 'humanity' & that was where his love for her came from,not some base desire

It’s crazy how others can influence your perspective on situations in hindsight. When I first saw this movie, I never got the creepy vibe the lead’s relationship. I always thought the Leon character became appropriately uncomfortable when Matilda would act a certain way around him. I just honestly thought Matilda was influenced by her environment and had an incorrect view of how to love someone. That’s why I thought it was ironic that Leon, not having any experience in love, was the one that was able to correct Matilda on the subject as he was able to grasp it himself.
Perfectly put. Also, The movie makes it clear that, despite being the most efficient hitman ever, he's still kind of a pure soul with a lot of innocence to him, almost child-like.

I read and heard many interviews before the movie came out, the press for it and interviews, after release, and the years of people encountering it until today. She did the movie, later grew into a wokester and derided it (surprisingly not Beautiful People where she played an even more "precocious" early teen), and now, people cannot help themselves but must ladle all their twisted proprieties on a work of art from decades ago.

Leon was NOT a pedophile!! He could have easily taken advantage of Mathilda's infatuation, but he did not. He clearly chose NOT to even "go there'. While the story about his first love back in Italy was true, he told Mathilda about it in the way that he did in order to let her down easy without hurting her. He told her he could never love ANYONE again in that way because of his previous lover's untimely death.
He paused in the hallway when he left for work (after her "I love you" revelation) to think of how, exactly, he was going to handle it and he chose NOT to act on it. Leon was childish in some ways, but he was also very wise... he didn't harm her sexually or emotionally because he DID love her... just not the way she wanted him to. She loved Leon, too, but she misconstrued her crush in a sexual way due to the way she was raised in that dysfunctional environment... simply because she didn't know any better.
Leon knew better. He was an honorable man.
He understood what was happening with her and why he had to let her down gently. He told her no so sweetly because if he'd said, "You're just a little girl" or "I don't love you like that." it would have destroyed her little heart and made her hate all men in her future.

Im pretty sure by the time he talks to Mathilda and gets shot from behind, Leon was already dying and knew it. He took several rounds center mass when he popped out to shoot the tactical dudes outside the room and would most likely have bled out very soon. That goodbye to her and the walk out was to finish the fight so she could be free from getting hunted

Leon needs something to love and care for, other than a plant, and Mathilda needs someone to love (and love her) but, because of her dysfunctional home life we get to see, she mistakes sexual love for the actual love she needs. There is nothing romantic about this relationship, other than Mathilda because she's young, confusing the two.

I'm gonna buck the trend here: IMO Leon *did* fall in love romantically with Mathilda. His face when she dressed up as Marilyn Monroe was not that of a father, and then there's her comments that would make him spit up his milk. You saw Leon explain he had lost his girlfriend at 19 and has been lost all these years, and then he met Mathilda. But he *knew* that her age was the deal breaker, so he behaved himself.
It was when he knew he literally had minutes to live that he held her face tenderly and confessed his love. She knew *exactly* what he meant by it, looked him in the eye, and returned the sentiment. I'd even bet that the director considered having them kiss but that audiences would think that was a step too far. Call it creepy all you want because she was underage, but this was real, meaningful, beautiful love.
The relief you see in Leon's eyes as he staggers out of the apartment building? I believe that was not just because he was about to leave this world free of the crooked cops, but also of the burden of living with the realization that the relationship he really wanted with Mathilda so badly was forbidden and unbearable. My $0.02.

But originally Leon came to America only a couple of years ago, having been in an intimate relationship with a little girl, until her father found out.
Natalie Portman's parents were horrified at the idea of such an individual being the film's anti-hero. The actor who played Leon was also disgusted and refused to do the more intimate scene in the film. He threatened to walk out unless that aspect of his character's was removed. So Leon and Matilda's relationship was changed to that of a Father figure and adopted daughter. Originally they became lovers.

When i watched it i thought it was based on a true story or something it was way too realistic. The uncomfortable relationship they had is unfortunately happens in real life I've heard some really messed up stories.

Leon's relationship with Matilda is father protecting his daughter. Matilda lost her family to this ass bag dirty cop, Stansfield. She went to him to help her. Plus, Reno stated to director of this movie, relation between Leon and Matilda is traditional father and his daughter. Leon wanted to sacrifice himself to protect Matilda like a father would in his situation.
