      Thanks - yeah to me it can feel super vintage, as well as also sounding like the kinds of things you get out of sampling voices and making tones, but without any of the faff and pain of actually working with samplers. A dream!!

    My Modwave is truly my favorite synth of all time. I have owned close to a couple dozen synths in my life, and the Modwave blows me away every time I turn it on. Time just flies by when I’m on it. Currently, I have a Kronos, a Wavestate, a Hydrasynth, three plugin synths on my computer, and the Modwave, which outshines them all. Fun to play, easy to navigate, and just a beautiful instrument. I wish they made a 61 key version. My only limitation on this beast.

    • @amb13nt59
      @amb13nt59 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ I have since upgraded to a Hydrasynth Deluxe, and now prefer it to the Modwave, though I still have the Modwave; it still is my second favorite. I think subsequent OS updates on the Hydra, along with my now doubled polyphony, as well as bi-timbral, now bring the Hydra closer to the Modwave.They are both excellent; for me, it depends on the application. Two years later, for me, Hydra is a lot more enjoyable to program, and I find it more predictable. I still do a lot of fiddle guessing on the Modwave, which is a blast…I just can’t necessarily keep things as “tight” with it. They are both still excellent, in my book. My early preference for the Modwave came from the fact that Korg has overall been my favorite for many years.

      Korg is on a roll downhill, I'm afraid. Opsix, Wavestate, Modwave - it's all just a take on old ideas, nice synths for sure, but nothing exceptional.
      ASM or Modal give you desktop and great aftertouch keybed versions of their synths, while Korg pushes those crippled 37 keys that feel so cheap. That's it. No other options.
      Korg's politics sucks, but they still have fans. That is the only amazing thing here.

    • @symbiat0
      @symbiat0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BlisterHiker That's a little harsh I think: true they are not big leaps like say the PolyBrute's morphing and mod matrix, but the last few Korgs have all had small unique features. I would like to have seen desktop versions of the modwave or opsix though (for which there would be no keyboard issues). Not sure what you mean by "politics", I thought only Behringer suffered with that :-)

    • @BlisterHiker
      @BlisterHiker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@symbiat0 I would like to see desktop versions too, but I'm afraid we can only dream about it. It's been a while since last time Korg had thought about different needs of the users (minilogue xd keyboard and desktop versions). Wavestate SE, for example, was announced a year ago or so and still nothing on the market, but that Dogboy who made the original comment is telling me Korg is on amazing roll... What roll? Releasing synths with cheap keybeds with no aftertouch? Are you kidding me? I have 15 yo E-mu controller with AT I bought for less than a $100 and it's so much fun with my Wavestation SR! :-) Sorry, but these days they simply suck and it's not only my opinion.

    It's strange to me that Korg reference the DW6000 / 8000 with this because those aren't really wavetable synthesizers. They have digital oscillators with selectable waveforms other than the standard saw / square / triangle, etc., but you can't smoothly sweep between the waveforms or modulate the waveform in a way that would be expected on a true wavetable synth like the PPG Wave.

    • @amsynths
      @amsynths 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed, DW's were not wavetable synths. I guess Korg couldnt mention PPG now the brand has a strong owner :-) This one has 64 waves in each wavetable, 32 voices until it runs out of processing power and note steals. There is a lot of alternatives Argon, Waldorfs, BBG Wave etc. A pro version with 5 octaves and AT would be more appealing given all the modulations. Great video !

    • @WIsammy123
      @WIsammy123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't think smooth morphing defines wavetables. It's just what we expect from a wavetable synth these days. You can have a wavetable without the smooth morphing between waves. The Polyend Medusa has a few wavetables like this. So did the SSSR Labs Kotelnikov Eurorack module. The DW8000 could technically have been a wavetable synth...just with a very small number of waves that didn't morph.

    • @geofff6671
      @geofff6671 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@WIsammy123 I consider a “wavetable synth” to be, at a minimum, capable of scanning through a complex wavetable with dozens and dozens of timbres per table. A single cycle waveform ala Virus or Evolver......they called them wavetables at the time, but no......not at all. A single cycle waveform is just a digital oscillator waveform, like a standard waveform.....but not standard. Many of these “wavetable” synths from the early 00’s pull this same crap. Oh look, a sine wave with some little squiggles in it. Luckily, Waldorf showed back up in 2007 and reminded everyone what wavetable synthesis can do.

    I recently read Jexus (sounds for synths) review on the Modwave and here I see you living it, just having fun and being amazed by the change of a sound while changing only a few parameters - while other people can't enjoy this deep synths as they compare it to the mammoth vintage Wavetable synths with analog filters.
    That's really not comparable and me too would be glad about a better build quality and a better voice seperation, a better punch... but this synth is unparalleled in the domain of wavetable synths - a vast area for sound designers. There is so much to enjoy.
    ❤ I loved to see your true and authentic enthusiasm. Keep it up, that's where the joy lives. Deep within us and not on the outside, while we are comparing audio quality. When we enter this domain, we can't hear the actual thing any more; we just put a veil over it.

    I got a wavestate already but the sounds both generate is just so fun and cool. Would prefer a rack mount version. If I was going to buy another synth then I would get this and be done with hardware. Like so much other hardware just doesn't stand out compared to software so I won't bother turning them on. This Korg range just really stands out. That and my Waldorf rocket for arps and subs and done.
    Also I wish MIDI inputs worked better with wavestate. I'm guessing this will be similar. From a DAW or MIDI keyboard it won't play many step sequences and samples or the tempo needs to be changed on the synth (no matter the MIDI clock). Playing multiple layers with different MIDI channels can be fun though with some fiddling around.

      Never tried the wavestate, but they’re different flavours from what I can tell for sure

    • @kilonaliosI
      @kilonaliosI 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Need , no. Both specialise in evolving texture sounds, wavestate does much better job at creating more complex , mix filling sounds, this one is better at more precisely controlling the timber of the sound because of FM which wavestate lacks. My personal opinion is that if you are not a fan of FM , personally I am not because of hard is to work with and how metallic and digital it can sound out of the box, wavestate is a superior choice. But to be fair wavestate is far more complex synth because of its multiple wavesequence lanes. Essential both are hard to use at full potential synths , it really depends what workflow you prefer. Both can make amazing sounds. Both are extremely powerful synth. I dont have this synth, but I do have waldorf blofeld which is again wavetable + fm. I own wavestate for a couple of days and I am already completely shocked how powerful this synth is.

    • @mylarmelodies

      It’s a really hard one to compare as there is quite a bit of crossover, it gets a bit like comparing wines - both delicious and just in differently flavoured ways! This is 100% a situation where I would recommend getting to a shop to play with both at some point and decide what speaks to you more. FWIW I’m delighted to have both.

      @@bobkob5868 don't forget the poly aftertouch available on the Hydra. Even the budget Explorer version. Although this responds to external channel aftertouch I think. Its actually a pity korg didn't add AT to all these mini synths to offset the limited small keyboards which certainly helps on my Explorer. Would have been worth a bit extra money. But I suppose one could always add something more.... Anyway Modwave sounds great AT or not.

  • @jhdrummer4815
    @jhdrummer4815 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Having a Wavestate and considering the same filters and effects, as well as the samples inside both synths I’m quite debated about buying a Modwave. Question, are there nice bread and butter presets? More suited for synthpop/dance? Or they are mostly complex ambient kind of sounds?

    • @mylarmelodies
      @mylarmelodies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually didn’t spend any time at all on the factory presets so can’t tell you (but I’m sure there are videos going thru them?). Absolutely no question that you can use this to make pretty much any “classic subtractive” synth sound you could want really. Obviously it can then also do weird complex ambient that a classic subtractive couldn’t.
