FOR LILI - MY GRANDMOTHER'S PIANO IS BACK TO LIFE
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 29 เม.ย. 2024
- When I found an old cassette with some recordings of my grandmother playing the piano, this was first an emotional moment. Few months later, I thought I might create music using some parts of her recordings. Of course and first, I made a tape loop, then thanks to a new piece of gear, the Arturia Microfreak and it's Sample function added to the V5 firmware, I was able to sample a note from her piano recording and to play with its original sound ....

That was incredible. I don't know the MicroFreak could do that.... (GAS intensifies)
Thank you for your kind words ! The Microfreak is a game changer for me, it can do so many things. It worth the price !
@@alastpicturefromvoyager first video that made me want that synth...
@@needfortweed8734 thank you ! and there are so many more reasons to buy thas synth ! 😊
Really nice ideas... very creative.... love the cassette loop idea in a 4 track!
I remember many years ago a friend made me a nice improv piano CD.. just a one off.. but the CD stopped working many moons ago (CD disk rot) and I've not been able to listen to it for 20 years... and the sad thing is my friend passed away 5 years ago. To think an old cassette from the 70s/80s has lasted longer speaks volumes.
Thank you for your words ! For sure old cassettes last longer than most of the CDs. Iam sorry for your lost.
The most beautiful tribute to your grandmother, thank you for sharing this. 🖤
Thank you ! Happy to share some emotions and feelings with you. 🤍
And just like that, I desperately want to know if my dad still has the old cassettes of my grandmother's piano playing. Outstanding work, man. As someone that misses his long departed musician grandmother, you brought some tears to my eyes with your story and the beautiful piece you produced.
Thank you so much ! I hope you find some recordings of your grandmother. They are surely treasures.
Absolutely beautiful! Love the process and way it's curated/visualized, thanks!
Thank you for your nice words ! 🙏 happy you like the process as well. 😊
This was so calming and heartwarming. It flooded me with emotions in the best way. Thank you for that. Your grandmother played wonderful piano. Makes me want to stick a field recorder near my granny playing organ.
Thank you soooo much ! Very pleased to read what you felt about it. You should do some field recording for sure, sounds are some very good memories.
@@alastpicturefromvoyager I'll definitely be doing so. She's made it to 96 years, so, it'd be nice to capture things that reinforce memories/importance of her time here. 🙂
@@thejoshuathomas you should do it ! And keep it preciously ! ☺
Amazing. Glad TH-cam got me to see this.
Happy you found me here and you like my creations !

the first time you played the sample on the micro was pretty moving. great piece :)
Thank you ! yes that was a nice feeling when I played the sample for the first time. Since this track, I play a lot with this sample, and I love it sound as much as I love where it come from.

Thank you so much 🤍 The first time I listened to her tape was full of emotions. I wish I could find more from her thanks to my family.
That’s actually really awesome

That was really beautiful in so many ways:
Personal relation always makes music special
Super cool techniques explained is very inspiring
The resulting track is warm and calming to me…
Thank you!
Thank you @schlaflabor1🙏 ! Very happy you loved the process and the track
I would never have believed the words "and record herself" would make me feel so emotional.
Other emotions were nostalgia...
TDK SA90 was my go to.
Glad to have been able to share a little of my emotions with you !
@@alastpicturefromvoyager You did a beautiful thing.
I was 27 when my grandmother passed. I'm 54 now. The time I saw her, I was going away for a few days, I hugged her and said "I love you and I'll see you soon." That has always been of great comfort to me.
@@buxycat I understand well the comfort to say these words to her at this time. We all miss our Grandmother. 🤍
What an inspiration! I recently learned about the genre, hauntology. This may fall under that.
Thank you so much ! I did not even know this genre had a name and I realize now that the concept of my musical project is all about making music with past sounds, audio archives … so you are right, this may fall under that genre. Thank you so much, I will dive into some articles about it to learn more.
❤
🙏
Soulfull and blessing composition around family memory, there s something deep and respect in this tune…
Thank you @nicolabelle1415 ! This was a special one for me for sure. Happy you liked it. ☺

So underrated! Really awesome and interesting. Makes me wanna try this out with my 8-track.
Thank you so much @0x80O0oOverfl0w ! Let me know if you try this and how it works for you.
Love it and learned that effortless requires big effort.
Thank you ! And you are probably right, this is the whole paradox in music 😊
Hey this is such a beautiful video. Very touching. Electronic music has a soul - we know that, but you havr managed to demonstrate it in a unique way. Farewell, and I am looking forward to finding more of your work on my feed in the future.
Thank you so much. Feel free to look at the other videos I made. You should like some of them. 😊 and I am working on new ones too …
Man, that was intense...
Thank you @distantcomets 🙏! Happy you liked it !
Заставляет задуматься. Спасибо!

This was beautiful! So long ago now, I remember being in a punk band trying to record on that very same Tascam. Terrible for that task given our experience in using the gear or pre amps or mics and mixing etc haha. But this makes me want to see if I can get a hold of that machine again and integrate some tape loops into my modular stuff. So cool! Thanks for making the video!
Thank you for your words ! You should try to find one, tape loops and cassettes fit well with modular. I made a video about how I make my tascam and my modular communicate. You should like it : th-cam.com/video/1xUtcmG7xA8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=15nxf8hfl05BBGWm
@@alastpicturefromvoyager amazing! I’ll check with my old band mate and see if he’s using it at all. I’ll also check that vid thanks!
@@turbotambourine let me know if you find one and how you like to play with it !
@@alastpicturefromvoyager will do! I imagine if I do, I’ll end up posting a video. I love sharing little thoughts and explorations. Looking at ways to share more of that.
@@turbotambourine I'll be there !
good job|
Thanks a lot !!! 🙏
Nicely done, mate. Useful tips for using the tape deck. I have one of these but yet to put some loops through it. I do not have a computer only my iPad which makes it a little clunky trying to work a daw system but I’m sure I could do something similar to this. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you ! I think you can easily find a free piano / synth app on your ipad to record the tape. Or some old keyboard synth from local second hand store ? Let me know if you perform the way you want.
My mother has spoken about a tape that my grandfather and grandmother recorded when singing. Unfortunately, it has been lost (probably thrown away). But if I had gotten hold of that cassette I would want to do something with it. Here is to any of the people that have amateur recordings of people long passed: hope you make something of it!
I hope you find this tape one day... 🙌
@@alastpicturefromvoyager me too, but I fear that is lost to history, known only to us, the descendants, through some half-remembered memories by my mother. I was not old enough to ever have heard it, but I have heard my grandmother sing along to the TV a few decades ago, and she had a really great singing voice.
@@needfortweed8734 perhaps sometimes memories passed down from generation to generation have even more emotional value than those written on paper or magnetic tapes 😊
@@alastpicturefromvoyager you might be correct there. I for one now can "imagine" what it would sound like and the emotional impact on my mother. But I would still love to honour my grandmother and her singing voice. But alas, she passed in the early 00s before I truly had developed an interest in recording stuff like that...
Beautiful tribute to her and at the same time you added your own vision. What an honor. Is getting the cut tap into the blank cassette easy because you didn’t really show that part?
Thank you David ! No this is not an easy part. I show how I struggle with it in this video, and I had to accelerate this part because it would be boring : th-cam.com/video/J6KAep9AaB4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tZBeKiHQYoyNYWEc&t=266
Id like to know how you got the right length of tape from ur originl recording to make tge loop
Hi ! Here the length of the loop depends of the type of loop I want to make : Long or short. But not of the sound itselft. How the sound will turn around is quite unpredictable in this case. If you want to know more how I make cassette tape loops you can watch this video : th-cam.com/video/J6KAep9AaB4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZykHnHxCdP8IMweO
So the MicroFreak can be a sampler with its editor?
Yes it can be a sampler thanks to the latest frimware and its editor. This is an awesome micro synthesizer !
Ohh no the Tape is damaged or the player 😭🎹
But it sounds beautiful!
Don’t worry I made a copy of the original tape to cut the tape. Thank you for your words !
@@alastpicturefromvoyager Btw does the Piano still functioning or is it gone?
@Quentiny_ the piano is gone many years ago unfortunately.
@@alastpicturefromvoyager ohh
@@Quentiny_ that's why I wanted to bring it back to life in a way.
did you actually cut your grans tape
No, I have recorded the cassette back on my computer, then I have selected a nice part to make a loop, and have recorded this part back on another cassette to make the final tape loop. My Grandmother cassette is alive ;-). Did you watched the first part of the video ? Everything is explained here (but perhaps these explanations are not as clear ...)
🥲 👏👏👏👏👏👏
☺🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Sounds a bit like Grouper stuff for me.
Ho I have to discover this project. Just read some descriptions about it on Wikipedia and it makes me curious. Thanks for this !
@@alastpicturefromvoyager I just love her music, especially selected ones (to my taste).
@@mikekashaev let me know if there is an album better to strat discovering Grouper ?
@@alastpicturefromvoyager Тэээк, минуту, надо подумать.
OK, let's start from these 3:
Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill
AIA: Dream Loss
AIA: Alien Observer
in the near future - I plan to check out the album called Grid Of Points and get one on vynil.
Совершенно не ясно зачем надо было физически портить исходник, если закольцевать нужный фрагмент можно после переноса записи в цифровой вид. А так, молодец, конечно.
damn u exploited your grandma like that
This is a part of the lagacy she left to me 😌
