Camping Along The Great Glen Way | Choosing Joy

  • The Great Glen Way travels for 79 miles from Fort William to Inverness along the Great Glen. It passes Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness, as well as the grand Caledonian Canal. It's crammed with historical sites and beautiful forests, and whilst the route may mostly be flat (perfect for anyone new to backpacking), the climbs that do appear offer the most magnificent views as a reward. It is a truly engaging walk, and like always, has a lot to teach the open-hearted walker whether wild camping or staying in other accommodation along the way.

I've come to the conclusion that anyone giving this - or any of Abbie's videos a thumbs down can be summed up in one word... 'envy'. They must yearn to experience her vitality, enthusiasm, magnetism, her determination to overcome mental health issues and, finally, her infectious smile!!

Bringing back lots of memories. My late grandad was from round that area and talked about the railway. We went up the hills just south of Loch Lochy and saw golden eagles. Nice, especially the wild raspberries.

56:05 - You sound like Henry Thoreau musing in Walden "I was suddenly sensible of such sweet and beneficent society in Nature, in. the very pattering of the drops, and in every sound and sight around my house, an infinite and unaccountable friendliness all at once like an atmosphere sustaining me, as made the fancied advantages of human neighborhood insignificant, and I have never thought of them since. Every little pine needle expanded and swelled with sympathy and befriended me. I was so distinctly made aware of the presence of something kindred to me, even in scenes which we are accustomed to call wild and dreary, and also that the nearest of blood to me and humanest was not a person nor a villager, that I thought no place could ever be strange to me again."
    Love it!

One small addition to the John Cobb story. He was not only famous for his water speed attempt, but his motor speed attempts as well.
One of his old cars is in the Brooklands museum, thirty miles sw of London. In the same place rests an old Wellington bomber that was retrieved in1985 from the bottom of Loch Ness after crashing there during WW2.

If that gets just one "new" person out there to put on some hiking boots and get moving, then you've done a great job. Somehow, however, I suspect rather more than just one will be tempted to take the plunge.

The landscape north of Fort William, have some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Besides from all the wetness in the West Highlands, which also killed my favorite hiking boots, I seem to remember there is a quite good outdoorshop in Fort William.

Well, I came looking for video of the Great Glen Way to understand what was ridable on thin tires as I plan my 3rd John o Groats to Lands End journey (and not on the busy roads this time). After 90 minutes I didn't care anything about the surface and that's because I got lost and mesmerised by the great journey and story telling. Thank you Abbie, what a Journey.

Some of the views were spectacular, your enthusiasm as always infectious, but what struck me most about this video Abbie is the quiet wisdom you gave us on this one. The choice in every moment to truly open our eyes and to see. To take joy in the beauty to be found everywhere around us. It is far too easy to get caught up in the destination and to lose sight of the pleasure of the journey itself. Great stuff. Stay safe and stay wild :-)

Hi Abbie, I came across your videos while looking at reviews for a new back pack and fell in love. I am fortunate enough to be from and live in the North West Scottish Highlands and love being in my home landscape. You have totally inspired me to do some of these longer distances trails when covid allows. I hope you can visit the west highlands of Scotland soon as it is extremely spectacular and special and quite different to the rest of Scotland with much more rugged and protruding mountains and hills! Come through Glen Shiel to the Isle of Skye and then even further noth to the Torriden mountain! Amazing videos from you!! Also wee side note the lovely village of Drumnadrochit where you seen the Highland games if you ever wondered us locals would pronounce it just like its spelt Drum-nah-droch-it (droch like loch/lock). Hope to see you back in Scotland soon

Beautiful Abbie.. I hiked the GGW when it first opened. Unfortunately I was wearing 3 season hiking boots and the flat terrain wreaked havoc with my feet and knees. I should have worn trail runners! The new trail was touted as a great introduction to a first-time LDW. But I disagree, as I found the GGW to be monotonous, and could put off any aspirant backpackers. The Speyside Way I preferred, as well as the West Highland Way. Just MHO! ⛺🎄🎅

My dad was RN in landing craft assault he trained with the commandos .
He told me he arrived at Achnacarry in September 1943 and it was pouring with rain he left two months later and it was still raining.
A few months later it was somewhat hotter in Normandy.

I’m into the last thirty minutes of the video, and thoroughly enjoying it. What a relaxing way to spend a quiet Sunday. ☕️ When you were walking through the forests I could imagine how pretty it would look in winter when it had been snowing. 🌲 With regard to the dead wood, I learnt something here. I didn’t know why it was left on the ground like that, so thanks! I’ve enjoyed this tour through Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
