Double Bass Drumming - Learning The Ankle Technique

  • Howdy all!
    You may (or may not) have noticed I've been absent from the channel lately.
    The reason for this is not that I haven't been drumming but that I have had to really focus on learning this technique as creating covers really was taking up the majority of my practice time.
    I always said this channel would include learning new techniques and becoming a better drummer and this is a big step towards that.
    I hope this video gives you an insight into what happens behind the scenes.
    Enjoy.

    I’ve been playing double bass pretty much my whole life. Trying this technique made me feel like a failure.. I don’t want to hear about someone’s struggles, but I think it’s important that a video like this was put out. You are the first person to say hey, you know what? This takes time, and we can relate to what it’s like to struggle w/ this technique. I’ll buckle down and be patient, thank you so much for making this vid bro. You’ve helped a lot of people❤️

      Hey. Ive been training this since August 2023, about 3 times/week. And now in febuary 2024 im almost at the point where i can play with both feets together. I feel so happy coming to this point, it almost feel like it must be downhill from here :) But how some people could manage this in 7-9 weeks is a mystery to me. I will be 50 in may…and i hope to be more solid with this technic by then. That would be the ultimate 50 year gift to my self. Never quit.

    The hardest part about learning the ankle technique for me has been letting myself relax to the needed degree. It's counterintuitive. But it flows well when I relax my knees and hips, and think from my heel instead of front ankle/shin muscle. Most certainly an acquired and easy to underestimate technique- when done well it Looks like so little is being done.

    • @rabidpickle
      @rabidpickle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This exactly. I had a huge breakthough just today. I don't have the muscle memory, so I currently start at an uncontrolled twitch one foot at a time. I slowly relax and the twitch becomes a solid, steady rhythm. then I incorporate a simple beat

    I stopped struggling so much to go past 220 when i moved my seat quite close, switch my feet up to the end of the pedal when going fast and switching back, adjusted seat height correctly, adjusting how i sit like kind of in the middle between the actual middle of the seat and the edge when going fast, adjust spring tension to max but keep beaters not too high, made the beater angle quite far back just before the point where it can hit you if you let it go to much, made sure there was enough leg room so i could swivel if i needed to, use quite light beaters.
    Consistency though and power are the most important imo, if you can't play it slow then you'll struggle a bit more playing fast.

  • @damianneve
    @damianneve 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The main issue is starting with your heel too high. it doesn't matter if the quads are isolated tension or moving with the ankle what matters is that with the heel up, your calf is in a half contracted state so you only have half the control of the section of the limb and half the ability to create the same springing force you would use from jumping when standing with the knees locked. Start from a fully stretched position with the heel closer to the ground. In this video you can see your progress is marked by how high your heel was when starting the beater swing. No, I'm not as good a drummer as the pros, but I am an expert in anatomy so hope this helps in the future.

      @@MartmanLangdrum glad I could help. An other extra.. Lots of douchy guys w online lessons are saying it's the gastrocnemus being used as the "calf" muscle but it's really the soleus as the gastroc is only dominant when the knee is in extension. You can't truly flex your calf with your knee at 90*... try it... It's the muscle behind it that's doing the real work. Hopefully this will give you a geek edge in conversations dealing with these guys or maybe you'll figure out a better method no one thought of yet and I'll come back and steal it 😉

    What a good video!
    I tried to do the doublebass mastery course from Marthyn (And I got so frustrated cuz my right leg just cramped up and I simply couldnt swing the beater relaxed with my ankle.)
    I had to start swinging the right pedal (Heeldown!) and try to get the mind-muscle connection to work better with my right ankle/calf. I have got a little bit of progress and that keeps my kind of motivated.
    My left foot works perfectly and the ankletechnique is "pretty" easy.

    Hey Martman, great video. I currently am faced with the exact same issues that you addressed in this video. When you first started doing the ankle technique, did it feel like a really broad, strong twitch. Like nearly uncontrollable except around certain tempi? You stated it was hard to adjust tempos and go slower, so I assume maybe that is the same challenge I'm facing as well. If that is the case, what have you done so far to help separate your feet from playing unison all the time or randomly, and gain control? Did you just sit and twitch away for hours until you felt the feeling of control, or were you able to find a strategy to over come that. I've been drumming for nearly 15 years, been teaching drums for about 6 years. Been using double bass since I started but have been on and off with practicing double bass, due the fact of quitting and re-trying because I've been consistently hitting the same walls. Have practiced every technique possible known the drumming world, yet I'm still behind a wall of 115 bpm. If I try to go any faster, my ankle's resort to that broad twitching motion. If you have any hints or tips you're willing to share, to over come this I'd be extremely appreciative.

    • @MartmanLangdrum
      @MartmanLangdrum  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good questions. I was at this exact same stage and I feel your frustration.
      Yes, when I first started it felt like a twitch - like a muscle spasm with zero control. Now I am able to control it more with my calf but this did not come easily. I remember watching videos which said to go slower you have to contract your calf slower but this didn't feel possible. Even now I still have a lot of improvement to make on this. It does simply come with practice - I think it helps to dedicate time to only this. I basically didn't do any other drumming for months and only focussed on this. I also feel like concentrating your mind on your calf the whole time helps.
      Ultimately there is nothing I can advise for you other than stick with it, keep trying, and eventually it will come.
      What can also help with separating the unison strokes is to do constant singles with one foot and then try to slot in off-beat hits with your other foot. Like 16ths with one foot and slot in 8ths with the other. It will help train your mind and body to get used to play not in unison.

      I do tend to get pain in the hip flexor after a while but it is also impossible to reach very high bpm without using some other technique. I can do ankle technique for 3 hours straight and feel no pain in the ankle at all. The power is an issue yes which is why a lot of players doing over 200bpm will use triggers, however I am sure with enough practice you could generate additional power using the ankle technique.

    How do you separate the legs? I can do right or left without a problem but have been trying for about 4 months without being able to separate, I do something similar, both feets doing the same, I can only separate at 170bpm but full leg motion, can you give me some tips, please?

    • @MartmanLangdrum

      What can help with separating the unison strokes is to do constant singles with one foot and then try to slot in off-beat hits with your other foot. Like 16ths with one foot and slot in 8ths with the other. It will help train your mind and body to get used to play not in unison.

    i’m slightly ahead of this in terms of double bass learning and something that i’ve found helps me (won’t necessarily help you but hey try it out) is using my hips to lift instead of my knees combined with ankle movement and it smoothens everything out a little. still a little choppy ofc but the feel is definitely there

    I love this video. I've been in such a bad place with my drumming for a long time. I've been trying this technique for a while. Drum Academy is awesome, but, NOWHERE can I see how someone actually STARTS developing this technique. They say "ankle, hip calf blah blah and soon you'll feel comfortable at 180-200 BPM". WHAT?? How does it look when first trying?? This video is perfect for showing someone struggling at the very start. I had a huge breakthrough today with this. I have zero muscle memory for it yet, so I start at a twitch and within a minute I have solid, steady hits (with one foot). One thing though, I can't seem to do it well in the middle of the baord. My foot keeps migrating to the very front of the board. I wonder if I need to change something?

    Hello sir. I also get stuck often with the beaters hitting in unison.. Any advice on how to get them separated? Also when you practice are you able to play at slower tempos? Its so so hard to slow this technique down to get a good long stretch of practice time

    • @MartmanLangdrum
      @MartmanLangdrum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Dan! I'm afraid I don't have any trick to separating the beaters other than dedicated practice time focused on literally just that. Start out without doing anything with your hands as it is harder to separate the feet (I have found) when you are playing the rest of the kit at the same time.
      The slowest I can play the ankle technique is 150bpm - others can do it as slow as 130bpm but I am not able to do that yet. I use the flat foot technique for tempos up to and including 140bpm. On my best day I was able to do the flat foot technique at 160bpm so there is a bit of a crossover which comes in handy if my legs are too tired to do flat foot well.
      With regards to long stretches of practice time, I find I can use the ankle technique for hours at a time at a fast tempo because it doesn't use any large muscle groups and so is not very taxing. Start at a tempo you find comfortable and try to slow it down over time.
      Good luck, with time and dedication you will start to see results!

    Hello Martman! I'm learning how to play drums seeing some videos here on TH-cam, including your videos. In this video you show very well the ankle technique. I notice that you play the drum pedals without shoes. Do you think that playing in the drum pedals with no shoes allow a better contact between the foot and the drum pedal? Do you recommend it?

      Hi, thank you for your comment.
      For me personally I do find that wearing no shoes whilst playing helps me with getting a better response, as you suggest. I would say however that it is a personal preference and many drummers find equal success in shoes.

    • @MartmanLangdrum

      That's how it starts but then you will learn to control it over time. Move your foot back on the board to create a larger beater swing then create the "random twitching" again. You should then feel the difference. Work your way from there. It shouldn't stop automatically though, make sure you are relaxed and your muscles aren't tense.

    I've tried fast DB for a long time, but I suppose it's just for me. I never felt comfortable playing fast strokes with my feet, somehow it doesn't feel right. I always cramp up, can't reach the desired speed, going from "controlled" to uncontrolled twitching randomly, awful timing, no even strokes, playing unison most of the time. It just sucks big time. It never felt good to me, so screw it, no more fast DB for me. Maybe I just lack the necessary motoric connections between the brain and the feet. I guess some people (like me) simply are not made for this kind of thing.

      Just think - if others can do it then why not you?
      If this really doesn't work for you then maybe look into doing doubles instead like heel-toe or swivel. There's no right or wrong way to do something. If you are producing the sound you want then who cares how you do it?
