I'm about 500 miles into new rear gears, and was planning on swapping the gear oil after this arbitrary break-in point. The plan was to have my mechanic do it, but damn... this is a no-brainer DIY. Thanks for the video, Frank. Off I go now to Harbor Freight for a pump.
Great video, thank you. Just did the oil change using your video yesterday. Although one small recommendation from the service manual is to apply a thread lock paste on the both plugs.
I didn't use a transfer pump when I did mine. There's enough room to position the bottle (I used Mobil 1) right next to the fill hole. You simply keep squeezing the bottle to fill the diff. Once fluid starts to leak out from the fill hole, you are done.
I changed the diff oil and used exacfly 2 liters since i installed the z1 diff cover and solid bushings also threw in a short shifter and messed with the boot a bit, I’ve noticed that when im driving hard I sometimes get a small whiff of gear oil in between shifts it’s inconsistent in higher gears and like I said it only happens if i’m going full throttle, i’m not sure if this is because i messed with the shifter boot or something else. Please let me know what you think and thank you for everything that you do for this community.
That's odd... you shouldn't smell diff oil from inside the car. I would check for leaks or sweats, and wipe up any spilled/overflow gear oil on the diff. Also, make sure the sifter boot is properly seated and sealed. You shouldn't be able to see any light through it. One last point: Thank you for your kind words!
Hey Daniel P, I just looked at the shop manual and the process is the same. You have a fill plug and a drain plug. Have a look at the shop manual (google g37 nicoclub fsm) Section DLN (Drivetrain) page 121 for an illustration and full instructions. Good luck!
"What are some symptoms of NOT doing a differential oil change?" I don't know... Every 5-8 years I replace my diff oil to keep it going for as long as possible.
I have used the 2 liter bottles. Before i snugged the upper bolt i saw oil wanted to come out but i tightened the bolt before that happen. Is that bad?
Hey Andy T, Sorry, but I can't show you something that is not on my car. :( Maybe head over to myg37.com and see if someone has a DIY on the front differential oil change. Good luck!
Hello, I really enjoy watching your videos, very helpful! I am currently planning to start doing all the maintenance myself just like you do. I am puzzled by one thing though, what height do you recommend to work under the car conveniently? I am planning to buy a jack and stands and not really sure which ones to buy because of the height. 14 inches of clearance are enough to work in convenience under the car? I have same car like your's. thanks!
Hey Yahia, Thank you for your kind words about the videos. I appreciate it! I just measured my jack stands and at the maximum height they are 17". Since I am a skinny guy, I don't need much room under the car. I probably use the jack stands most of the time around the 12-13" height (unless I'm changing a clutch, then you need a LOT of room under the car) Good luck!
Hey Robert Zarate, That pump was purchased at Canadian Tire in 2007, but I can't find it on their website. If in Canada, here is a selection of pumps: www.amazon.ca/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dautomotive&field-keywords=Oil+Fluid+Suction+Vacuum+Transfer And in the US: www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dautomotive&field-keywords=Oil+Fluid+Suction+Vacuum+Transfer I hope this helps!
Hey, I love your videos. I got 2012 G37s coupe, I've done 100k miles on it. I'm not sure if the person who owned it before me had ever changed it's gear oil. Do you recommend changing it. My car still shifts smoothly.
Hey Zeeshan Minhas, Thanks for you kind words. Since the diff oil is not expensive, there is no harm in changing it now. The manual transmission oil is about $30 per litre, so the cost is about $100. If you plan on keeping the car a long time, it isn't a bad idea to change it.
Planning on doing this to my G37x. Just to make sure I don't do anything wrong, I'd have to do both front and rear differentials since its the AWD model right? Also, as I was reading the manual, it said that for 7AT 2WD models use 75w-90 but other models use 80w-90. In my case, I'd use 80w-90 that contains "limited slip" correct? since it's not an RWD system (just wanna make sure)
Hey Ian James, Since your G37 is all wheel drive, your differentials are not limited slip. This makes it easy and you can use just about any 75W90 GL-5 differential oil. Many G37/30z folks use a Redline's 75W90 GL-5 without any issues. Also, you don't need to worry about 80W90 vs 75W90. The 80W90 is slightly more viscous ( or "thicker") below 100C/212F but is the same thickness at and above 100C. Make sure to wipe off the diff drain magnet, as it will be full of metal grit. Good Luck!
Hey Ian James, According to the service documentation the rear diff takes about 3 pints and the front is 1-3/8 pints. Good luck with the drain and refill.
Hey Enkeis, I don't think you won't notice anything different. However, you will know that the differential has clean, fresh oil, that will provide good lubrication for the next 5+ years. This is one of those rare "quick and easy" things to do that doesn't cost very much :)
Hey kevin tillack, You are correct, the washers are not expensive and you can't go wrong by using a new one. For me, I have always reused them without issues. Do what works for you :)
Since the differential oil is rather thick, it is best to go for a 15 minute drive to warm it up, then drain it. This will make it easier to get more of the old oil out.
Any name brand 75W90 synthetic will work well. You don't need any special "limited slip" diff oil, as the type of limited slip used on the G/Z is a sealed "viscous" limited slip. Some types have clutches and those requires a friction modifier in the diff oil. Many have used RedLine 75W90 diff oil without any problems. This is also what I am going to use for my next diff oil change.
Don’t know if you will reply since this video was posted 4 years ago, but does the rear and front differential take the same fluid? Is it the same process?
It is the same process for just about every differential :) Check you owner's manual for the recommend fluid type... Off the top of my head, 75W90 should be good :)
Hey Hezha Abdullah, Thanks! I am glad you like the videos :) Wow, your mileage is very low. Don't you like driving your G37? (just kidding!) If you plan on keeping you car a long time, I would change all the fluids in the next year or two. They are 5 years old and not as fresh. If you do it yourself, it won't cost very much and you will have nothing to worry about for the next few years.
As shown in the video, with the top fill plug removed, simply add oil until it drips out, then put in the top plug and tighen. That sets the proper level. :)
I have a 2019 370Z port coupe with the 6MT transmission and had to have the differential replaced recently due to leaking oil seals. With 500 miles now on the new diff after a careful break-in, I would like to change out the fluid to get the metal particles flushed out. Nissan specs an 80W-90 conventional Hypoid gear oil for the car and I was curious as to why a conventional rather than a synthetic oil was specd.
Hey Jim Nesta, I don't know why Nissan says to use a non-synthetic fluid. BUT many 370/G37 owners have put in full synthetic 75W90 with out any issues. I will be doing the same at the next diff oil change. As for changing the diff fluid a 500 miles, I don't think that is required. The drain plug has a magnet on it, so any metal debris is collected. BUT if it makes you feel better, then go right ahead :)
Hey Ivo M, I used a floor jack and axle stands. They can be purchased at Canadian Tire, Walmart, Amazon or any auto parts store. You will need to read the factory shop manual to understand where the jack points are -or- if you have a G37, pop over to myg37.com and do a search. As you can guess, you need to know exactly what you are doing putting a car on jack stands. If you jack the car up at the wrong point, you will damage the car. If you place the jack stand at the wrong place, you will damage the car. Also, if the jack stands are not in the proper spots, the car can slip and fall off them, damaging the car and injure or kill you. Be very careful!
Hey Gm Mg, Sorry I don't have a video on changing the transfer case since my car is rear wheel drive I don't have a transfer case. In looking at the shop manual, it looks very similar to changing the differential oil. Just make sure you use use Genuine NISSAN Matic J ATF and you will need about 1 litre, or 2 1/8 pints. Good luck!
Hi Motorvate! I have a dumb question but am trying to choose the right fluid for my car. I checked the service manual and says this. For 7A/T 2WD models: Genuine NISSAN Differential Oil Synthetic 75W-90 or API GL-5 synthetic gear oil, Viscosity SAE 75W-90*5 Except for 7A/T 2WD models: Genuine NISSAN Differential Oil Hypoid Super GL-5 80W-90 or API GL-5, Viscosity SAE 80W90*4 Does that mean that for my AWD version I need to use 80w-90? Thanks! Have the 2010 g37x
Hey Daniel P, Infiniti is telling you to use 80W90 for your G37X differential oil. However there is very little difference between 80W90 and 75W90, so use any SYNTHETIC 75W90 for the best protection.
Thanks Marhall Volkmann! Almost every differential is the same. Almost all of them have a drain and fill plug, which makes it very easy to drain and refill with fresh gear oil.
hello I also have an infiniti g37 2009 and I would like to know if the parts are compatible with the Nissan 370z because we in France is the misery to find parts and accessories
Hey Bastien lormescity, Many parts are the same, but not all. Do a search to find the Infiniti part number and then check to see if that part is available at a Nissan parts website. It will take a bit of work, but you don't know until you try!
It’s been almost 3 years since buying my G. It’s time to do my diff gear oil change also! Put a little under 30k miles so far. What’s your opinion on redline gear oil and trans oil? / side note I just ordered a Bell Raceworks diff brace.. so excited ! I heard the brace works miracles !
Hey Matt Jay626, For the differential, any 75W90 will work well - and that includes Redline 75W90. I will be using that on my next diff oil change. As for the automatic transmission fluid, I really don't know, since I have the 6 speed manual. However, Redline does list it as compatible with "Genuine NISSAN Matic S ATF" so you should be good to go :) Please let me know your thoughts on the diff brace.
Motorvate DIY ok great, looking to purchase redline 75w90 oil from Z1. I have a 6 speed manual also ! As for the diff brace, I’ll let you know how it goes. I’ve seen videos of pulls/runs recording the diff without the brace and it moves/jumps/vibrates. This puts more strain on the diff and bushings. Once the brace is installed it takes away all the diff play and vibrations. Also, it minimizes wheel hope and grounds your rear wheels to the road for maximum power/torque! I’ll give you my update..
Hey Matt Jay626, I have no idea why I thought you had the auto trans! For me, I like to use the factory "Manual Transmission Fluid, Nissan HQ Multi 75W-85 " (part number: 999MP-MTF00NP) Redline's MT-85 75W85 GL-4 gear oil is also a good option.
Motorvate DIY update: installed my bellworks diff brace today, on the G. OMG is it worth it! I felt the full power grounded to the rear. The acceleration and pedal response is way more aggressive! Side note. My exhaust sounds a lil different also, I would say the tone is more crispy! Diff brace is so worth for $130!
Hey Taelor, Nope it didn't feel any different. If you have the factory differential from the SPORT model, you don't need a "LSD compatible" gear oil. The G35/G37 LSD is a "viscous" type and is a sealed unit.
That is not a dumb question. I simply drove the car up onto the 4 ramps at once. The ramps are a great time saver as you can get the car up in about 60 seconds. I did need to trim down the top of the rear ramps so they don't hit the underside of the car. I will check and see if I have enough video from the summer shoot to put together a short video on using 4 ramps. Thanks for the idea :)
Motorvate DIY oh ok because I was thinking how you were able to get the rear ramps to fit even on stock height. I have Rhino ramps and there is no way I can slide them under the car in front of the rear wheels. Can't wait to see that video. Thanks
Matty that is really low mileage for a 2013 G37! I always follow the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual or the service and maintenance guide that came with the car as a starting point. (you can download one here if you don't have it: owners.infinitiusa.com/iowners/navigation/manualsAndGuides) PLUS I change the brake/clutch fluid and power steering fluid every 2 years (very easy & cheap:
These ones: th-cam.com/video/JPZ4ccFXMQg/w-d-xo.html I don't think they are sold any longer. You should be able to modify just about any ramps for clearance without reducing the load carrying capacity. It sure is quick and easy to get under a car with the 4 ramps!
Awesome! Just curious as i have Rhino ramps and there is no way for me to slide them in front of the rear wheels as the ramp is too high. Maybe i should get a set of low profile ramps.
Hey Ishak Zaghari, The oil I used, was 80W90 non-synthetic oil that I purchased at my local Nissan dealer. The owner's manual stated the 75W90 is only to be used on the 2 wheel drive cars, with an automatic trans. I will be replacing it with 75W90 synthetic this spring. Also, there is no noticeable difference between 75W90 and 80W90. Generally the 80W90 is a little more "thicker" at colder temps, which is a little odd to specify that. So... just pick up any name brand (Redline, Mobile 1, etc) synthetic 75W90 and you are good to go :)
Hey Christian Omenyi Jr, A differential is used to provide torque to the drive wheels. Rear wheel drive vehicles have a differential at the rear and it is a separate unit. Front wheel drive vehicles have a differential built into the transmission or transaxle. Here is a very good video explaining how it works: th-cam.com/video/F40ZBDAG8-o/w-d-xo.html As for the oil changing. Many people never change their differential oil without issues. BUT for anyone who wants to maximize the life of their car and keep repair costs down, the differentail oil should be changed every 3-6 years depending on how hard you drive the car. Engine oil generally needs to be changed every 5,000 - 10,000 KM to keep the engine happy for a long time.
You are correct and for some reason the rear wheel drive G35/G37 calls for 80W90 and the all wheel drive calls for 75W90. Many have used the 75W90 without any problems. They are very close in viscosity a lower temps, and the same at higher temps. There is no wrong choice :)
Hey ItAintGaY, Yes the process would be the same. Just check the owner's manual for the recommended weight. Redline 75w90 is a popular choice. I went with the dealer provided 80W90.
Hey James Alan, Generally differential oil is as slippery as possible to reduce friction. Gear oil (for a manual transmission) needs to have a specific amount of friction, so the gear syncros work and we don't grind/crunch gear when we change gears.
Hey dgree100, On the G35 and G37 the rear differential capacity is about 1.4 liters (1.5 quarts) and so I needed 2 quart sized bottles. If you have an all wheel drive G35/G37, the font differential capacity is about 0.65 liters or just over 1 quart (1 1/8)
Hi Motorvate, Again a great video. I have a question you maby can answer. I have a 370Z automatic transmission. Nissan claims that the automatic transmission fluid for 370Z is maintenance-free. What do you think about this ? i read all kind of stories on the internet
Hey Ferry Van Der Vlit, If you use the actual Nissan fluid (not a "compatible with" fluid) and you car doesn't have high mileage on it (maybe > 100,000 miles), I think you will be ok. Pop over to my37.com and ask what others have done and what was the result. I can't speak with any first hand knowledge, since all my cars have a manual transmission. Good luck!
Hey NjBoRi 973, Since most people never change it and they seem to work forever, there is not set schedule that I know of for the G37 (or most cars... Trucks are different and usually have a schedule of when to change it) For me, since it is fairly quick and easy, I change mine about every 5 years or 60,000 - 80,000 miles (96,000 - 128,000 Km)
@@MotorvateDIY Yes he's a wonderful youtuber when it comes to cleaning cars... AmmoNYC, you're voices so alike I did a double take. Also thankyou for helping me do my first diff oil change. I love doing burnouts and donuts in my 370gt, and the diff oil was not only dirty but low - very satisfying to do myself. Also thankyou for mentioning the exact size of hex bit and torque specs
I did watch a few of his videos... they are well done!! As for the similar sounding voice, I didn't think so... anyways, I'm glad the diff fluid change video was helpful. :)
You bring up a very good point! The G37 owner's manual says: "For 7A/T 2WD models: API GL-5 Synthetic Gear Oil Viscosity SAE 75W-90 All other models: Genuine NISSAN Differential Oil Hypoid Super GL-5 80W-90 or API GL-5, Viscosity SAE 80W-90" G37s with rear wheel drive (aka G37 Journey) with the 7 speed automatic transmissions use 75W90 for the differential oil. The 6 speed manual cars use 80W90. However, the weight of these oils are so close it won't make any difference. Since 75W90 is much easier to get, most people use it without any issue.
Hey NjBoRi 973, You are correct! The G35x / G37x has a front differential. The process is exactly the same. Do a search here to see where the drain and fill plugs are. Good luck!
@@MotorvateDIY great so now my car is shutting off and this is what the ob2 scanner is reading...my SHRTFTB1S1 is jumping from 11 to 18..my SHRTFTB1S2 says N/A ,SHRTFTB2S2 (7-11) my shrtftb2s2 is at 99.2!!!l shrtft1 15-18..iat 188 shrtftb2s1 14-17.. Hi i have a 2008 nissan 350z with 19000km. Do you think it's necessary to change the transmission and differential fluid considering the fluids are 10 years old but with extremely low mileage? Love your vids very informative! Subscribed!
Hey Mike, If it was my car, I would change them. It is fairly easy to do and not too expensive. 10 year old oil will have lost some of its ability to lubricate and prevent metal to metal contact. If you plan on keeping the car, it would be worth it and give you peace of mind know your almost new 350Z is being looked after. By the way, with your mileage you should be changing your engine oil every year.
Hey Alvaro Silva, I guess it depends how much you get out. The factory service manual states the capacity of the differential is 1.4 litres or 1.5 quarts. When I did mine, 1 quart (.946 litres) was not enough.
Hey New Phone, A differential is a simple device that only has a few moving parts and any 75W90 GL-5 will work just fine. As stated in the owner's manual, the differential fluid needs to be GL-5 80W90 or GL-5 75W90 depending on model. It doesn't have to be anything Nissan specific. Many people use a full synethic like RedLine GL-5 75W90 without any issues. From the 2011 G37 Owner's Manual: For 7A/T 2WD models: API GL-5 Synthetic Gear Oil Viscosity SAE 75W-90*7All other models: Genuine NISSAN Differential Oil Hypoid Super GL-5 80W-90 or API GL-5, Viscosity SAE 80W-90*6 Now, for the transfer case and transmission, they are much more complicated. I would only use what is listed in the owner's manual. The wrong fluid can damage the transfer case and transmission.
The factory shop manual and the owner's manual call for 75W90 for the RWD automatic G37 and 80W90 for all other models. Either viscosity will work without any problems :)
This is not correct. You are overfilling the differential system. If you get to the point that it's dripping it means you have 1.9 liters in there. Manual says fill 1.4 liters and that's how much actually comes out when you drain it. I think it's possible to cause some sort of damage when you overfill it.
Hey New Phone, Yes, it does say 1.4 liters, but is also says "Oil capacity (Approx.)" Just fill it until it drips out of the fill plug and you are good :)
Hey Masimka Macim, I really don't think that it necessary . Changing 95-98 % of the fluid gives you all the benefits so the differential will last a VERY long time.
Motorvate DIY Two more question. I want to buy q40 2015 with 50k miles. In your opinion, how often do I need to change transmission fluid? Do I really need to do this? Do u know how to check mileage. I’m afraid if it is rollback. Thank you!
Hey Masimka Macim, I don't have any first hand knowledge of the G37/Q40 automatic transmissions, as mine is a manual 6 speed. However, the automatic transmissions in the G37/Q40 do seem to be very reliable. According to the factory shop manual, there is no need to change the automatic transmission fluid. BUT if that Q40 was my car, I would change it every 50,000 - 60,000 miles just to keep the transmission happy.
My Nissan dealership wants $300 plus to service my AWD system. I wonder if this includes cleaning the differential out. 115k on my 37X gotta get this done! Looks pretty easy, thanks for the video!
Hey JJ Walker, The front diff is the same process as the rear diff and uses the same fluid. The transfer case uses a special fluid "NISSAN Matic J ATF" and the drain/fill process is the same. Feel free to check your owner's manual list the required fluids in the "Technical and Consumer Information" section.
Hey John,
I am glad the video helped you to see how easy it is.
I hope to see you in August at the meet.
Excellent video. My G37 was totalled in March and I now have a 2013 6MT Sedan. Will defintley come back to this.
Hey Zahy,
Thanks for your kind words. I hope you enjoy your 6MT as much as I do!
How did you guys find one😭 there wasn’t a single manual sport sedan around me for 2 million miles. Went with the coupe and I do not regret it one bit
Great video, thank you. Just did the oil change using your video yesterday. Although one small recommendation from the service manual is to apply a thread lock paste on the both plugs.
Hey Eugene Tooms,
Thanks for the correction!
Keep up the videos man im enjoying them. Very helpful!
I'm glad you find them useful. There are many more episodes to come before I start shooting again this summer.
I didn't use a transfer pump when I did mine. There's enough room to position the bottle (I used Mobil 1) right next to the fill hole. You simply keep squeezing the bottle to fill the diff. Once fluid starts to leak out from the fill hole, you are done.

One last point: Thank you for your kind words!
Plan to do this next week. I can't believe some shops want 1200 or more for this job!
You'll do just fine... It is very easy!
Good work! Can you tell where did you get your data on the oil you used for your G37s.
Very good podcast and question is that oil your go to oil. I want to change out on a brand that maybe race cars use.
I think it is best to use what the manufacturer recommends.
Using anything "race" may not always be good/best for street cars.
Is this the same process for AWD automatic versions?
Hey Daniel P,
I just looked at the shop manual and the process is the same. You have a fill plug and a drain plug.
Have a look at the shop manual (google g37 nicoclub fsm) Section DLN (Drivetrain) page 121 for an illustration and full instructions.
Good luck!
Thanks as always!
What are some symptoms of NOT doing a differential oil change? Specifically the infinit g37 ?

I HAVE THE SAME YEAR AS YOU. How you liking it
Hello, I really enjoy watching your videos, very helpful! I am currently planning to start doing all the maintenance myself just like you do. Hey Yahia,
Thank you for your kind words about the videos. I appreciate it!
I just measured my jack stands and at the maximum height they are 17".
Since I am a skinny guy, I don't need much room under the car.
I probably use the jack stands most of the time around the 12-13" height
(unless I'm changing a clutch, then you need a LOT of room under the car)
Good luck!
Motorvate DIY Awesome! Thank you! I'll keep that in mind.
Another great video!
Sparky: Thank you!
Do you have a link of where you purchased that pump?? I like how its less of a pain to maneuver compared to the orange one with two hoses.
Hey Robert Zarate,
That pump was purchased at Canadian Tire in 2007, but I can't find it on their website.
If in Canada, here is a selection of pumps:

Hey Zeeshan Minhas,
Thanks for you kind words.
Since the diff oil is not expensive, there is no harm in changing it now.
The manual transmission oil is about $30 per litre, so the cost is about $100. If you plan on keeping the car a long time, it isn't a bad idea to change it.
@@MotorvateDIY thanks for the reply! I bought 75w90 GL5, 2 litre which is from Volkswagen. Hope this would work good.
Hey Zeeshan Minhas,
That should work well. Make sure to wipe the gunk from the drain plug magnet.
Hey Ian James,
Since your G37 is all wheel drive, your differentials are not limited slip.
Good Luck!
@@MotorvateDIY That's a huge help! Thank you! Would you recommend buying 3 quarts then for the front and rear? or would 2 be sufficient?
Hey Ian James,
According to the service documentation the rear diff takes about 3 pints and the front is 1-3/8 pints.
Good luck with the drain and refill.
@@MotorvateDIY 5 pints total, my luck i'll only find places that sell it in 4-pint bottles

doing this on my 2016 nismo manual transmission soon, what changes should i notice? if any?
Hey Enkeis,
I don't think you won't notice anything different.
However, you will know that the differential has clean, fresh oil, that will provide good lubrication for the next 5+ years.
This is one of those rare "quick and easy" things to do that doesn't cost very much :)
Very informative video. The washer is usually like 50 cents at most dealerships. I don’t know how much they would charge for the genuine gear oil tho
Hey kevin tillack,
You are correct, the washers are not expensive and you can't go wrong by using a new one.
For me, I have always reused them without issues.
Do what works for you :)
Its actually pretty easy to do, you've inspired me to do my diff fluids. Now could you do a video on A/T fluid change😅
I'm glad to hear that!
As for the auto trans fluid change, I don't have any plans to make an episode on that... my G37 has a manual transmission.
Ez pz same as this video different fluid.
@@MotorvateDIY such a flex😂
Should this be done while fluid is warm with given time to cool down beforehand or just completely cold like let the vehicle sit overnight?
Since the differential oil is rather thick, it is best to go for a 15 minute drive to warm it up, then drain it. This will make it easier to get more of the old oil out.
Thanks, also what fluid is used for the Limited Slip Diff? I want to make sure to use the right stuff and the manual doesn’t make it that clear.
It is the same process for just about every differential :)
Check you owner's manual for the recommend fluid type... Off the top of my head, 75W90 should be good :)
What differential fluid do I get for a 08’ 5at?
Check the owner's manual, but many, many G35/G37/350/370 folks use a synthetic 75W90 without any issues.
Do you need to warm up the car before changing rear differential fluid for my G?
If you go for a 10 minute drive, the thick diff oil will be much thinner and you will get more of the old oil out.
Your videos are very helpful !! I have 2013 g37 ipl with 43k mileage on it should I change all the fluid ?? Please reply thanks
Hey Hezha Abdullah,
Thanks! I am glad you like the videos :)
Wow, your mileage is very low. Don't you like driving your G37? (just kidding!)
If you plan on keeping you car a long time, I would change all the fluids in the next year or two.
They are 5 years old and not as fresh.
If you do it yourself, it won't cost very much and you will have nothing to worry about for the next few years.
Motorvate DIY
Thanks for replying !! Lol I bouth it last year .yes I'm planing to keep the car !!
And another thing about changing differential fluid how do you know if it's full ?? Or just over fill it
I would too... you have a brand new car!
Hey Jim Nesta,
I don't know why Nissan says to use a non-synthetic fluid.
Hi there, how did you get the vehicle mounted up on the stands and where did you get the equipment? Thanks 👍 Awesome vid
Hey Ivo M,
I used a floor jack and axle stands.
What gear oil did you use? Sounds like you said 80w90 GL5?
For some reason, the G37 owner's manual shows that the RWD G37s use 80W90 GL5 and the AWD G37s use 75W90.
Either one will work great!
@@MotorvateDIY thank you for the reply. I actually noticed that also. I'm going to get the Amsoil 80W90.

Hey Gm Mg,
Sorry I don't have a video on changing the transfer case since my car is rear wheel drive I don't have a transfer case.
In looking at the shop manual, it looks very similar to changing the differential oil.
Just make sure you use use Genuine NISSAN Matic J ATF and you will need about 1 litre, or 2 1/8 pints.
Good luck!

How about Transmission Fluid?
I don't have access to a dipstick..... so how would i even check the tranny fluid?
or change it?
Sorry to say, but you can't. At least not easily... Special tools are required to check the level of the automatic transmission.
Hi Motorvate! I have a dumb question but am trying to choose the right fluid for my car. I checked the service manual and says this.
For 7A/T 2WD models:
Genuine NISSAN Differential Oil Synthetic
75W-90 or API GL-5 synthetic gear oil, Viscosity
SAE 75W-90*5
Except for 7A/T 2WD models:
Genuine NISSAN Differential Oil Hypoid Super
GL-5 80W-90 or API GL-5, Viscosity SAE 80W90*4
Does that mean that for my AWD version I need to use 80w-90? Thanks! Have the 2010 g37x
Hey Daniel P,
Infiniti is telling you to use 80W90 for your G37X differential oil. However there is very little difference between 80W90 and 75W90, so use any SYNTHETIC 75W90 for the best protection.
Awesome thanks for clearing it up! Would I do the same for the Front Differential even though it says to use 80W90?
Hey Daniel P,
Absolutely!
Nice vide as usual , Did it made a difference after the oil change .,
None that I noticed... however it is cheap insurance to insure the diff will love a long an happy life.

Hey Bastien lormescity,
Many parts are the same, but not all.
Hey Matt Jay626,
For the differential, any 75W90 will work well - and that includes Redline 75W90. I will be using that on my next diff oil change.
As for the automatic transmission fluid, I really don't know, since I have the 6 speed manual.
However, Redline does list it as compatible with "Genuine NISSAN Matic S ATF" so you should be good to go :)
Please let me know your thoughts on the diff brace.
Hey Matt Jay626,
I have no idea why I thought you had the auto trans!
For me, I like to use the factory "Manual Transmission Fluid, Nissan HQ Multi 75W-85 " (part number: 999MP-MTF00NP)
Redline's MT-85 75W85 GL-4 gear oil is also a good option.
Motorvate DIY cool, I’ll take your advice and use the factory Nissan manual trans fluid! Appreciate your feedback, you are awesome !
Size of tools needed to loosen the two that do did?
10mm allen :)
I got Mobil 1 for mine. It is made for the LSD. Did you feel any difference?
Hey Taelor,
Nope it didn't feel any different.
If you have the factory differential from the SPORT model, you don't need a "LSD compatible" gear oil.
The G35/G37 LSD is a "viscous" type and is a sealed unit.
This might be a dumb question, but how did you get all 4 wheels on the ramps?
Thanks
Motorvate DIY Hey so I have a 2013 g and it has 15k miles on it. What fluids(besides oil) do you recommend be the first to get changed?
Motorvate DIY So it's more about time not miles
Matty that is really low mileage for a 2013 G37!

Im about to change mine, is that 80w90 synthetic or nonsynthetic? And does it matter?
Hey Ishak Zaghari,
The oil I used, was 80W90 non-synthetic oil that I purchased at my local Nissan dealer.
Is there a washer on both??
Yes there is :)
What is the differential and will not changing the fluid be as catastrophic as let's say the engine oil?
Hey Christian Omenyi Jr,
A differential is used to provide torque to the drive wheels. Rear wheel drive vehicles have a differential at the rear and it is a separate unit. Front wheel drive vehicles have a differential built into the transmission or transaxle.
Here is a very good video explaining how it works: th-cam.com/video/F40ZBDAG8-o/w-d-xo.html
As for the oil changing.
How do you know when to stop adding fluid or how do you know when it’s full
when it drips out of the top fill plug, it is the correct level :)

How many liters do I need to change g37 sedan sport’s LSD rear differential oil?
Buy 2 quarts... It uses about 1.6.
@@MotorvateDIY do I need to buy rear diff oil specifically for LSD for sedan sports? Or can I just use normal gl-5 rear diff oil?
The limited slip diff is a "viscous" type.
This means it is a sealed unit and you can use normal (non-lsd) diff oil, typically 75W90.
@@MotorvateDIY 08 g35 sedan’s FSW says 80W90 for rear diff fluid. Do you still recommend 75W90?
You are correct and for some reason the rear wheel drive G35/G37 calls for 80W90 and the all wheel drive calls for 75W90.
Many have used the 75W90 without any problems. They are very close in viscosity a lower temps, and the same at higher temps.

Hey flipmode00 squad,
You are welcome... Thanks for watching it :)
what the diff between diff oil and gear oil?
Hey James Alan,
Generally differential oil is as slippery as possible to reduce friction.
Gear oil (for a manual transmission) needs to have a specific amount of friction, so the gear syncros work and we don't grind/crunch gear when we change gears.
Is this the same for the automatic g37?
Hey Gerardo Mendez
Yes, for the rear differential it is exactly the same.
Check the owner's manual for the recommended gear oil.
Was 70k miles your first diff oil change?
Hey David Lopez,
Yes it was.
David Lopez they recommend every 30K miles according for the service guide booklet
Nice 🤙🏼
Hey Dung Doan,
You are welcome. It is a nice and easy way to keep the driveline happy :)
Does it normally take 2 bottles of differential oil for a full change?
Hey dgree100,
On the G35 and G37 the rear differential capacity is about 1.4 liters (1.5 quarts) and so I needed 2 quart sized bottles.
If you have an all wheel drive G35/G37, the font differential capacity is about 0.65 liters or just over 1 quart (1 1/8)
What year infiniti is this?
Hey 19hundred Block,

Hi Motorvate, Again a great video. I have a question you maby can answer. I have a 370Z automatic transmission. Nissan claims that the automatic transmission fluid for 370Z is maintenance-free. What do you think about this ? i read all kind of stories on the internet
Hey Ferry Van Der Vlit,
If you use the actual Nissan fluid (not a "compatible with" fluid) and you car doesn't have high mileage on it (maybe > 100,000 miles), I think you will be ok. Pop over to my37.com and ask what others have done and what was the result. I can't speak with any first hand knowledge, since all my cars have a manual transmission. Good luck!
Thanks for your help.
how many miles should i change this
Hey NjBoRi 973,
Since most people never change it and they seem to work forever, there is not set schedule that I know of for the G37 (or most cars... Trucks are different and usually have a schedule of when to change it)
For me, since it is fairly quick and easy, I change mine about every 5 years or 60,000 - 80,000 miles (96,000 - 128,000 Km)
How much does it take to fill it up for an LSD?
Hey DarudeOwnageZ,
According to the factory shop manual all rear G37 / 370z diffs require approx 1.4 litres or 1.5 quarts.
Has anyone said you sound like the detailer from AmmoNY?

Thanks for the video but I thought the rear diff takes 75W-90 and the front driff on AWD cars are 80W-90.
You bring up a very good point!

All other models: Genuine NISSAN Differential Oil Hypoid Super GL-5 80W-90 or API GL-5, Viscosity SAE 80W-90"
G37s with rear wheel drive (aka G37 Journey) with the 7 speed automatic transmissions use 75W90 for the differential oil.
The 6 speed manual cars use 80W90. However, the weight of these oils are so close it won't make any difference. Since 75W90 is much easier to get, most people use it without any issue.
Oh my bad, I completely forgot this was the 6MT.

Hi i have a 2008 nissan 350z with 19000km. Do you think it's necessary to change the transmission and differential fluid considering the fluids are 10 years old but with extremely low mileage? Love your vids very informative! Subscribed!
Hey Mike,
If it was my car, I would change them.
Almost forgot... I am glad you find the videos helpful and thank you for subscribing :)
Thanks for the reply! Yes i do change the engine oil and filter every year. And i will change the diff and tranny oil this year as well. Thx again!
Why do you need 2 when you can fill it up with one diff fluid
Hey Alvaro Silva,
I guess it depends how much you get out.
The factory service manual states the capacity of the differential is 1.4 litres or 1.5 quarts. When I did mine, 1 quart (.946 litres) was not enough.
Manual says only use Genuine Nissan fluid or you will damage differential. Is that BS? Says same thing for transfer unit fluid and transmission fluid.
Hey New Phone,
A differential is a simple device that only has a few moving parts and any 75W90 GL-5 will work just fine.
As stated in the owner's manual, the differential fluid needs to be GL-5 80W90 or GL-5 75W90 depending on model.
It doesn't have to be anything Nissan specific. Many people use a full synethic like RedLine GL-5 75W90 without any issues.
From the 2011 G37 Owner's Manual:
For 7A/T 2WD models: API GL-5 Synthetic Gear Oil Viscosity SAE 75W-90*7All other models: Genuine NISSAN Differential Oil Hypoid Super GL-5 80W-90 or API GL-5, Viscosity SAE 80W-90*6
Now, for the transfer case and transmission, they are much more complicated.
I would only use what is listed in the owner's manual. The wrong fluid can damage the transfer case and transmission.
@@MotorvateDIY Manual says for 2wd use 75w140 and for AWD use 80w90.
Love sir gonna do mine
Good. It is very easy and not expensive :)
That transfer pump looks like a PITA.
Hey Steven Laubach,
There are many ways to do this. Since I already had a transfer pump I used it. :)
So all I need is two gallons?
No... two, 1 quart bottles will leave you with a little left over. Capacity is about 3 pints, 1.5 quarts.
AutoZone and others say 75w-90?
Who else has used 75w-90 royal purple with success. 09 G37 2wd
Hey New Phone,
Ummm, nope.
The factory shop manual states to fill the differential until it drips out the fill plug hole:
See page DLN-165 .
@@MotorvateDIY Please have a look at the service manual. Page 7. www.nicoclub.com/FSM/G37/Sedan/2011/FWD.pdf
@@MotorvateDIY i looked at DLN document. On page 255 it shows final drive capacity 1.4 liters. Am I correct?
Hey New Phone,
Yes, it does say 1.4 liters, but is also says "Oil capacity (Approx.)"
Just fill it until it drips out of the fill plug and you are good :)
Don’t u think that is better to clean differential inside too. There are lot of wear left inside.
Hey Masimka Macim,
I really don't think that it necessary .
Thank you!
Hey Masimka Macim,
I don't have any first hand knowledge of the G37/Q40 automatic transmissions, as mine is a manual 6 speed.
Hey JJ Walker,
The front diff is the same process as the rear diff and uses the same fluid.
The transfer case uses a special fluid "NISSAN Matic J ATF" and the drain/fill process is the same.
Feel free to check your owner's manual list the required fluids in the "Technical and Consumer Information" section.
