Ralph Macchio did play it perfectly: Daniel really is not a sympathetic character or sweet kid -- He's actually kind of a whiny little punk who almosts asks to be picked on. But, the bullies play their parts so convincingly & with such intensity that you wanna see Daniel kick their asses in the end
Not so. Daniel's a good kid who's just headstrong at times. Moving to a new city where he doesn't know anyone, saying goodbye to his friends and family in Jersey, and getting picked on (nearly) all the time in his new school, of course Daniel might seem "whiny". But I guess fighting back and not letting bullies push him around means Daniel "asked to be picked on".

He told me that scene was filmed twice, a year apart. The glass was gimmicked to be mechanically shattered as he was punching, to where he never touches the window,, but the equipment didn’t work on the 2nd window, and he ended up putting his fist through the window for real. It cut him up real bad and caused some serious damage.
