I genuinely cannot explain why, but Skyrim is enveloped in this intense sense of melancholy and wonder that has faded but never dissipated. I went through a very difficult childhood, and I still remember first hearing from a friend at school about this new game called Skyrim. I bugged him for stories from his playthrough and lore of the series until my mother was finally able to get it for me. I was presented with the biggest and most open world I had ever seen, and I was immediately hooked. I spent literally thousands of hours during my childhood playing Skyrim, and it became a quirk of my personality that I was obsessed with The Elder Scrolls. Any time things got too hard for me, I had a pair of headphones and a controller that immediately allowed me to escape to a world in which I, and the actions I took, actually meant something. I even met my best friend because of Skyrim, and we shared stories, lore, and gameplay until we lost touch with one another. Now when I play, I get this strange feeling of both longing for the past, and being thankful that this game allowed me to escape it. Even the music makes me feel something in my soul. For this, I will forever love Skyrim.

I am 60 and I have only been playing Elder Scrolls V since 2018. I have mods installed that give it the look and feel I want which is wonderful. This time around I am a treasure hunter. I explore every inch of the lands and have found even to this day things I had missed. Just doing the quest is not enough, you have to explore everything. To me that is what Skyrim is all about. I have talked to NPCs and then the next time I talk to them something new is there in what they say. I hear so many say, "I beat Skyrim" and I laugh. You don't beat Skyrim, you explore it and finish quest if you want too. I got interested in this because of Shirley Curry watching her play in her 80's and thinking "Wow, this looks fun to play". Thanks to her, I am now a forever Skyrim fan.

I first played Skyrim about the same time Avarti did, only I was 46 then. It is not that we are not children (he is still one by my standard and I am envious of that) anymore it is that after awhile you realize that you can't say what you want, the NPC's rarely more than 4 sentences deep, and it is still mostly DPS contests followed by loot fests when it comes down to it. The boss fight convention is getting tiresome. I was as impressed with Pong when it came out in '72. My immersion with that only lasted an hour or so. 21 years later in '93 Doom blew my socks off and that immersion lasted a few weeks. 18 years after that Skyrim's immersion lasted a couple months about 3x over 11 years. When AGI both writes the next great game and runs the NPCs of it, we may finally have lasting satisfaction. Anyway, Avarti hasn't waited for the holy grail of computer RPGs anywhere near as long as many of us. He was born into the age of decent computer games.

Yeah, I already an adult by the time Skyrim came out. Not all of us have the experience of playing this game when we were more ignorant. I still play it today, and I don't even use combat mods. Maybe the game has aged, but honestly the only newer game I own is Shadow of Mordor, and I haven't played that in quite a few years. Skyrim may not be perfect, but considering what game programmers go through, honestly its better if we don't ask for perfection. Several programmers took their own lives due to the mistreatment they got making Red Dead Redemption 2. Now I just assume any new game lead to real-life tragedies. Point is, maybe my not playing more recent games has helped keep the game from aging as badly. I simply know nothing better. And I'll be honest, I'd rather keep it that way.
Besides, we still have the Beyond Skyrim project to look forward to. It'll greatly expand the world, and actually have decent writing. Of course, who knows if we'll ever see it at this rate, given the trouble the team has finding people to work on the stupid thing, and Bethesda trying everything in their power to stop mods from working. I'm shocked the project is even still in development. Mods that old normally don't work anymore. It'll be great if it comes out, and it'll surely give Bethesda a run for their money. It may be in an older engine, but it'll still be higher quality. Besides, es6 is being made with the creation kit again, so honestly it probably won't be THAT big of a leap beyond Skyrim. Fallout 4 was a major disappointment when it came out, and the same damned engine is going to be used for es6. Imagine what THAT'S going to look like when it finally comes out in 5 years? I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was a repeat of the release of ET for the atari 2600. Fallout 76 was already a diseaster, and fallout 4 failed to make any real impact. The Beyond Skyrim project is basically going to be what an ES game should be, but Bethesda cannot manage for w/e reason. If we never see any of the Beyond Skyrim projects (it has been a while since we've gotten an update, and they did admit some time ago the projects haven't been going too well), oh well. It is what it is. Besides, plenty of people still play this game despite Beyond Skyrim literally not existing yet. People still play freaking Morrowind, and a year or two ago they even came out with their own 'Beyond Morrowind' project (for lack of a better term). Skyrim is a younger game, so it'll probably last longer than Morrowind does. Point is, morrowind shows that old games can continue to live on, and honestly Skyrim got's far more going for it than Morrowind (other than Morrowind arguably having the better writing).

This isn’t surprising at all. Half of the content on this channel is devoted to tearing Skyrim apart despite claiming to love the game. He spends so much time hoping on the Internet bandwagon by needlessly nitpicking the game’s flaws instead of enjoying the game’s strengths that I stopped watching him because of how tiresome it got. I’m honestly surprised that it took him this long to admit that he had finally reached this point. It’s hard if not impossible to have fun playing a game when you spent so much time with the mindset of over-analyzing and obsessing over the game’s flaws instead of just taking in the whole experience and the positive elements that the game does very well.
Personally I think it’s good that he’s moving on from this game, because by this point, it doesn’t seem like his relationship with Skyrim is entirely healthy. Seriously, for a while he’s talked about the game more like an ex-girlfriend that he once loved and had a bad breakup with rather than a game that he enjoys. Skyrim is something that holds me and my mother's relationship together, as we both play the game and she enjoys hearing me talk about the lore for hours on end while she searches through a dwarven ruin. I've made many characters, very recently I started on a male argonian, each character is like a new breath of fresh air for me, as it gives me an opportunity to explore more roleplay options. One of the problems with a single player game, like skyrim, is once you've beaten the game, played most/every side quest, played with so many different playstyles... the game eventually becomes less "Explore new places and do new things" and turns into "checklist of things to progress". They're fun to explore and see all the places and find all the new things, but once you've done that, nothing is new anymore, except for the occasional thing that was missed during play, like easter eggs or secrets.
It's sad, but we can _never_ experience something for the first time, again. Be it a game, a movie, a theme park, tasting new food, the list goes on. Once you have done something for the first time and experienced it, it's etched into your mind, you might LOVE going on rollercoasters, but that new thrill, the unsteady fear, the stomach churning, the dizziness, after you've ridden it, it's different from the first time, and always will be.
I'm reminded of this every time I try to replay a game I loved that was single player. Undertale comes up a lot, because I've only played it TWICE, once took about 9 hours and I soaked in everything, explored everything, talked to everyone, it was an emotional spiral. The second time I played it was a little bit after the first time, I just wanted to experience the game again, but I had already seen 99% of what the game had, talked to pretty much every NPC, already beat the game (pacifist), the only thing that was new to me was I went back to the start after beating it and got to talk to "Him" and get a little more lore, but the entire playthrough only took 2 hours this time, and it didn't feel as grand or emotional since I've already seen everything. I still love Undertale, but sadly I can never play it again.

The heart-tuggingly yearning quality of the soundtrack and beautiful lore (and wisdom of Paarthurnax!) often tempts me back to play it again, but you're right you can never recreate the enjoyment of a game which you attach to a certain period of your life, probably more free, irresponsibile times. The Unofficial Patch devs making the most fallacious arguments to avoid letting people download the pre-anniversary edition version of their mod when it's already common practice to list both pre-AE and AE versions of mods only makes the problem worse.

The new spells, cheaper and stronger then base. New homes, make every other house obsolete and are often free. The armors, not level gated and often better then their standard conterpart, level one daedric. No elderscrolls is perfectly balanced, but this is ridiculous. All the new quests I have played have been pretty bare bones and outta place. There is some really nice things in this bundle, but so many broken things as well. If you do get this bundle please take a look at the items you decided to download in UESP."

@@PeterKoperdan If it’s your first time ever playing the game, I would advise you to remove the anniversary content at all costs. The anniversary edition is, in my opinion, made for people who already know every inch of the game and are looking for new refreshments to justify another playthrough; for those players - like me - the anniversary upgrade is a welcome one. Yes, it breaks the game and removes every last shred of balance it already didn’t have, but it’s new, and a lot of fun.
However, If you are a new player, you should experience the game raw. You get a much more authentic and balanced feel for the game, and it actually feels like Skyrim. Fall in love with the game first, get bored with it, leave it, come back to it, fall in love with it again, and repeat that until you got enough hundred hours into it that basically nothing about the game can surprise or excite you anymore, and THEN get the Anniversary Content.

The storyline and multiple endings really made it replay-able too. Some skills could be completely overlooked but added huge advantages to players who took the time to indulge in them. Skyrim set the bar for other games that followed, it’s like windows 98.. many have followed, but few have successfully added to what it brought to the table.

While I think some of the difficulty in enjoying games comes just from us getting older and more experienced I think an underrated aspect is that nearly all games lose their sense of wonder faster due to the existence of TH-cam B and wikis.
Part of the wonder of gave as a child was experimenting to figure out the best way to play the game on your own, or talking to friends and combing over forums to try to find better strategies or information on the eggs eggs and epic side quests you missed.
Now it’s hard to temper urge to immediately turn to google the moment something gets too difficult or grinding starts to become dry etc.

Hi Avarti, having been born in 1988, I was definately not a child anymore when Skyrim launched. I have played both Morrowind and Oblivion since they released on day 1, being only 14 when Morrowind launched, so I was very familiar with The Elder Scrolls by the time Skyrim arrived. Still, I share the same experience. Between Morrowind and Oblivion, only a few years had passed. But Skyrim's successor is 12 years in the making, so it's been a very, very long time, and the same sense of nostalgia for it has grown inside of me. I sometimes revisit it, having done so lastly just yesterday. But its age cannot be denied, and by this point, the game holds little secrets, even with mods, so the whole experience is broken. The first 5 minutes still feel blissful, but I get bored after about half an hour and figure out it just isnt worth my time to revisit everything for the umpteenth time. My love for the Elder Scrolls is very deep, and I have a son who is now 4, so he can grow up with the Elder Scrolls VI in the same kind of way I did with Morrowind. I still have copies of the old games, so I will be sure to show them to him once he's a bit older. We need TES VI!

I feel this so hard. I was at the midnight release in 2011 at Gamestop. School the next day, but I was a senior so my dad let me stay out and stay up to play it. I got through the opening and to Riverwood before calling it for the night. The sense of awe and wonder I felt was like nothing else. Beat the game over the next few months, did every side quest I could.
By the time the dlc came out I had moved onto other games, but assured myself I'd come back to it. When I moved to college and got a gaming PC, I did in full force. Sunk more hours into it with mods then I did my first playthrough. Sadly, the luster of mods kept me from playing the dlc.
Now, 12 years later, I still haven't fully finished dawnguard or dragonborn. The luster is gone, the nostalgia isn't enough to fuel the fire to play. I've tried and tried but this video is so true. I've moved on... The closest I came to reigniting it was when it came out on the switch. The portability made it viable and I got halfway through dawnguard... But stopped playing.
Still this game holds a special place in my heart, and the teenager that fell in love with it will always love it.

This is exactly how I felt when I played rdr2 for the first time a few years ago, now I’ve started playing Skyrim and I can’t wait to get that feeling again

I couldn't really get into RDR2. I can't stand being locked into 3rd person view, and the movement doesn't make me feel immersed.

@@hengineer your able to go into first person on the ps5 idk about other consoles but I agree that the movement isn’t the best

@TribetWilson maybe I could on the PC. I think they focused so much on how realistic things were it broke player immersion when it came to wanting my character to "go here" "do this", to me anyway. The 3rd person view is what killed Witcher for me, though.

My last save on my pc was in 2020. Always want to start up a session and just run around off nostalgia but I know that time can be put to use exploring new games. Skyrim will always be the game I hold most high though. ❤

well, while that sucks to hear, i've also been playing since 2011 and i still greatly enjoy playing it and grinding and levelling my characters and exploring things i've already explored 😂
hopefully you can find the joy in it again 🙏

I think what works with Skyrim and what is impossible to reproduce after the first playthrough is that you want to explore. You are an adventurer, and the world invites you to explore, you quickly feel powerful and it feels good walking around.
I tried Fallout 4 a while back, and I felt so weak, everything outside is a threat, the very air wants you dead. I hope Starfield with its setting can make us feel like adventurer again.
However, growing up and understanding mechanics and seeing patterns in game makes it hard sometimes to enjoy games without thinking too much and be immersed.

I love Skyrim and I'm 61 years old. I've been playing it for quite a
    few years now.
I've modded it, and still enjoy the heck out of it. Its so immersive.
I feel like I'm really in the game when I play. I love the world of
Skyrim. The graphics are absolutely beautiful.

Welcome to growing old. It sucks. I feel exactly the same. MAybe it helps you as it helped me. I started playing DAggerfall Unity, even I never played it in the past, it somehow triggered something and was a completely new experience I could enjoy as if I played Skyrim or Morrowind for the first time again.

I know the feeling. I remember i was at university and discovered the game. I had no idea what skyrim was and what to await in it's world. I started playing an afternoon and found myself at 3 am in a dark room with my laptop while outside was raining and it was cold. I was fighting vampires and monsters and it felt so immersive and magical and spent my next days abandoning my classes to play. For sure this feeling won't come back and it has nothing to do with the game but me. The first time for everything is magical and it never is the same and maybe that's good. I decided to play this game again after 8 years and to be honest i still enjoy it maybe even more as i now have a decent pc to enhance the experience.

One of the interesting things for me about replaying Skyrim is every time I pick it back up, I find something I've never seen before. Granted, its never a questline or something big, but maybe some small location behind something id never seen before, or an easter egg. It fills me with appreciation every time knowing Skyrim is so intricately put together that I've probably not seen everything.

Would you agree with this Steam review? If I play it (1st time ever) should I remove the Anniversary Upgrade content from the game (if possible)?
"Why Bethesda why? Decided to get this bundle on sell was pretty excited, till about level 20~ish it just broke me. Why is none of this content even remotely balanced? The new spells, cheaper and stronger then base. New homes, make every other house obsolete and are often free. The armors, not level gated and often better then their standard conterpart, level one daedric. No elderscrolls is perfectly balanced, but this is ridiculous. All the new quests I have played have been pretty bare bones and outta place. There is some really nice things in this bundle, but so many broken things as well. If you do get this bundle please take a look at the items you decided to download in UESP."

@PeterKoperdan So, the thing about the anniversary content is that it's not official content made by Bethesda. It's a compilation of mods made by prominent modders curated by Bethesda. When you fire up AE, the game downloads a bunch of mods basically. I think it's $20. The review is accurate, a lot of the new content is out of place and the spells are definitely stronger than vanilla spells.
But I personally like it. It's mods I wouldn't have put together, and I don't know everything in the mods so it adds a bit more of that discovery feeling back to skyrim for me. Up to you tho, you can probably find a list of the mods included in AE if you feel like saving $20
