My experience has been totally positive so far. Most men that comment on the beard are usually telling me that they wish theirs grew in thick like mine. Apparently it really is an insecurity for a lot of men. My advice to them is “grow what you can, and style it appropriately.”

Haters have nothing better to do but hate. I take thier jealousy as a sign of their weakness and only pushes me more. Most don't realize it's far more than just not shaving, and buying a bigger comb. God forbid we men start to take care of ourselves. Anyone can just shave their face and toss on a suit to look good.

I’ve found that when people say things about others, beard related or not, it’s usually saying much more about themselves than it ever could about me or what I have going on. Take the power away from them, smile, nod and go on with your day.
I’ve always been blessed to be able to stand strong in whatever style or fashion I wanted to rock or wear, so I haven’t been as phased by bad beard comments when I happen to get them. As David Goggins famously says, “Can’t hurt me” - 🙌

Hey Dan! I 1000% agree with your assessment that it comes from a place of insecurity! I grew a beard for the first time this year at age 49. My experience has been overwhelmingly positive! I volunteer a lot at the OSU campus and I frequently get compliments on my beard. Just two weeks ago a Buddhist monk who was volunteering in the Oval complimented my beard! They shave completely and have forsaken all attachments and he still recognized an awesome beard when he saw one and had to speak up! Be confident and forget people who come up with negative remarks! I definitely feel like there is a stigma in society regarding men and taking care of either hair on the head or beards. I felt that before and have always tried to keep as minimal "product" as possible for taking a shower. As I have gotten older, I stopped caring what others thought, but still kept the minimal approach going. Once I found this channel and started growing/taking care of my beard, has not really crossed my mind much. Love these discussion videos! Thanks Dan!!

Dan when this sort of thing comes up the first quote that pops into my head is “why accept criticism from those you wouldn’t accept advice from?” The vast majority of folks that regurgitate something like “did you lose your razor” are simply just following suit with things they’ve heard others say. They’re just parrots that haven’t put any real thought into what they’re saying. No sweat off my back. For those that double down and want to try to turn it into an argument or debate I simply point out that they have grey hair or long hair or short hair and that I’m not offended by that at all, why should they be offended by my beard? More often than not the conversation ends there. If I tell them I enjoy it, it’s therapeutic, and it makes me happy then the situation is diffused entirely. You can’t make everyone happy, but you can do what makes you happy and that’s all there is to it.

I do have a question though not related to this video but as I've been watching you for a long time, I do know you've said in videos that beard oil has a shelf life and there are ways to keep those products from losing their effectiveness quicker and ways to make sure you are getting all the goodness from them like shaking them before use. My question is; if someone has a collection of oils they've had for a year or however long the shelf life is, are their any negative side effects using "old oil" on your face?
For reference, specifically for me -- I am in the military so I only have a mustache now but look forward to growing out my first yeard. Love the content you make -- always gets my thumbs up!

I was a Disco Club DJ back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Think Saturday Night Fever, Michael Jackson, Prince Etc…. Part of playing the role was using all kinds of hair products for the job and dressing up for it. It was fashionable back then for men to style their hair. Fast forward to today. I have the exact same thoughts Dan. I've been on the receiving end of being said my beard care is "girly" from both men and women. its the ones who don't have beards, or facial hair for that matter. Its the women who don't care of beards and/or facial hair. That's from my experiences.
The ones I have not heard it from are the men who are well groomed, the women who appreciate men who are well groomed and put in the time and effort to look that way. People who understand the effort we put into making sure our man manes are looking good are the ones giving the head nods, the ones saying "nice beard", the ones who give a high five and you know why without any words spoken.
Getting complements on my beard feels just as good as giving them too. So folks, don't be afraid to give the random person a complement on their beards (or facial hair for that matter). Yu might be surprised as to how goo it makes you feel too.

I have found that you can usually tell if someone is looking for a confidence booster, wanting to know ow if it is really ok to care for their beard. If that’s the case then those are great conversations to have. And you can tell if someone is just having fun and joking around with you. Which great as well. We could all use a little humor and laughter in our lives. And you can always tell if someone is being a jerk due to their own insecurities. And if that’s the case, here is a great response to shut them down.
Simply state in your most polite and sophisticated manner just say
“Unlike you sir, I am most confident in my masculinity.” Give them a polite smile and carry on.
Or something like that to convey the same message

Outstanding! Your comment that is was the opposite because only men have beards is brilliant! You described yourself as being deliberately different, but you still are in no way a “slob”. At first, I thought the issues of products, tools, and routine was due to grooming in public. For those too young to have had the pleasure of “77 Sunset Strip”, there is “Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb” to address that. Otherwise, what matters is what you called caring for yourself and being purposeful. Those with Military or First Responder experience know that care for one’s person and, as the Brits say, one’s “kit” is essential beyond question. You talked about confidence and insecurity. I’d add integrity and self-respect. It seems to me that this started with comments that were not asked for. I think there is too much to consider for a standard response other than saying nothing, and certainly even more to think about before acting as if the comment is valid. After all, such comments say much more about who is making the comment than what the comment itself is about.

Of course, that's just the haters, because alot of people tell me that they can tell I'm well-groomed and that my beard looks better than other peoples' because of the care I give my beard- and that's not feminine, being groomed and caring for your looks / etc is something that's not owned by a specific gender.

No, taking care of yourself and your appearance is not "girly"!
It is slightly ironic that you end up using tools and products that are associated with girl care and I have often mentioned to people that I learned more about "girly products" when I grew my manly beard. Years ago before I had ever heard of or considered using beard oil, butter, wash, conditioner, etc. I liked having a long goatee and I never took care of it and it showed. Once I went full beard, I randomly came across a couple of beard care channels, yours and Scuba. For reference, I remember when you made the video about emulsifying and how you had misused the term until you learned what it meant. I figured if you dedicated a video to correcting yourself you were probably telling the truth. I also found that I preferred how informative you were and that you cared enough to research and educate yourself so you could share it with others. My beard appearance today has a lot to do with your sharing of information and actually trying out your recommendations for routines, styling and yes, products. I am happy to share this with everyone who asks as well as referring them to your channel. I can recall emailing you questions and requests for product recommendations and you always took the time to reply. I am on my 2nd journey at this time and just about at the end of the awkward uncooperative mid length stage. My 1st journey was interrupted by some difficult life events that led to some depression and I stopped caring for my beard properly and the hair got some damage and I chose to cut it with the 5 guard and start over rather than trim the damaged portion and save as much as I could. I get many compliments on the beard and generally if they are coming from another beardsman, it's a great opportunity to strike up a conversation about care and products and share what I have learned. Thanks my bearded brother!!!

Wait the bearded guy shaved his beard because someone told him that it was girly useing all thing's beard related. Who cares right better that then to shave it down to a short stubble because what happens then said people will find something else to focus on and the once bearded guy will be unhappy inside and wished he kept it. The standard remark i actually get like every time i see a certain OAP Mr original i call him is let me give you a trim i tell said member of my local community why would I want that a trim it goes against every thing I stand for a longish wild beard ( you really shouldn't care what others think ). There is nothing more masculine than having a beard. When I take care of my beard it makes me feel masculine. Ladies do their hair, their nails etc...to make them presentable to men. My wife likes my beard, and what I do with it makes me more presentable to her. Let's face it, the Viking digs have archeologically found that Viking men went to great lengths to keep their hair and beards stylish. They were conquerors. Can we do anything less?

I don’t think taking care of your beard is girly because most women don’t have beards and can’t grow beards , taking care of your beard is more manly than girly. When I had really long hair some people used to tell me I looked like a woman , but that was only from other guys not women, all the women liked my hair, I didn’t change because of the haters, when I changed to a shorter hair style it was when I wanted to change not because of someone telling me to change. When I decided I wanted to have a beard it was because I chose to grow one not because it was popular, the only thing popularity did was make it more normalized for men to have beards, so no negative comments, unlike if you grew a mustache on its own , there would be all these weird unnecessary stereotypes that people would tell you when you are growing it out.

There is absolutely no way that caring for one's beard would or should be considered "girlie." I'm sorry that the gentleman felt compelled to shave his beard because of rude comments. In my 69 years, I learned a long time ago that comments don't matter. Of course I sometimes offer a few choice words in reply, but you simply cannot lset others words affect you. Grow your beard. Wash it and blow dry it if you so wish. Use your butters and oils. Live your life (you only get one) to its fullest. That's my 2 cents.
