Your "tutorial" was awesome. I'm a beginner, so the computer language is still a bit like Greek. Thanks for a very intelligent, thorough presentation. I'll be watching more and so fortunate you are out there to help.

This video is the best Apple Ad ever. I would've considered going back to Windows potentially if I didn't see this video. It's hilarious when you see things glitching in a tutorial video and I really appreciate that you left that in. Just goes to show that windows it's not that well polished, or the device was underpowered.

Thanks so much! Saved me a little from the cable mess. A little LUL for the "good ole' USB cable" USBA to lightning though. I have that cable and it works with all my chargers as well but I need the USBC to lightning one for my Mac. Then my wife needs the USBC to USBC cable for her phone.
Airdrop saves the day, even if it does not work as elegant as one year ago.

Hey, welcome back. Question.can you transfer directly to an Mac external hard drive instead of into the Mac it’s self.?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question @Michal Kalish!
Are you wanting to directly plug in an iPhone or device directly to an external drive and not involve a Mac at all?
There are some external hard drives on the market that are designed to plug in SD cards and memory cards directly into an external drive without a computer, but I'm not sure if works with a phone or iPad.
There is also another device that I will link below that is specifically designed to plug directly into an iPhone or iPad to backup files and such. I'll link below for reference:
SanDisk 128GB iXpand Flash Drive Go for iPhone and iPad
      amzn.to/3KyDSsV
      www.amazon.com/shop/joelfeld
Other than that, you would need the Mac to be the middle connection to a larger desktop external hard drive. From there you could copy photos to it, but you would still need a computer.
I hope that makes sense and helps! Thank you for your continued support!

Thanks Joel! Is this how you’d recommend getting photos from my husband’s phone (& now my teenager has a phone)? Using airdrop maybe. I’m the main family photographer & store them, but my husband takes some occasionally I’d like to keep together. I haven’t been sure what is the best way to get his photos with mine (without having all mine go to his device, that would be awful for him) I guess that’s the main one. I’ll just let my daughter airdrop me occasional photos she wants kept with family photos.

If I delete a photo from my phone, I don’t want it automatically deleted from my Mac). Photos used to transfer automatically until they disabled the auto feature ( I stream?). I’m on the older side now and getting lost. I’m on Ventura. Thanks so much.

      Hi @LarryFasnacht,
      What devices do you have?
I'll assume you have a Mac and iPhone/Camera or something.
Plugging directly into the Mac will always be the fastest. As far as importing into Apple Photos or using Image Capture, it really shouldn't matter.

      Hi @baccaraty!
You are not required to use iCloud Photos. You could certainly turn keep that syncing option off and sync photos only to Google Photos. You'll need the Google Photos App on your iPhone and then you can start syncing your photos there vs iCloud.
I don't have a video that is specific to Google Photos, but I do have one that is a comparison between iCloud, Google and Microsoft that i'lll link down below for reference:

Photo Stream worked great for this, when you don't want or need every photo stored in the cloud. It would seamlessly add photos to my iMac and the do a backup of all my photos with Time Machine. No Apple has killed photo stream so there goes that. Looks like I'll have to go back to the stone ages with a cable.

Okay then, I would like to share a problem I am having in trying to communicate a bunch of photos taken with an iPad to team mates that are all using windows PC's.
What I found while taking the pictures on the iPad and you have it opened into a single view of the picture, there is a menu banner at the top. The "I" blue bubble opens a photo information window showing a place for a caption and other physical parameters of the photo. So I thought I was being smart and organized used the caption option on each photo giving it a description. Well I did that 57 photos later, made an album of them.
Here is the kicker I tried getting the pictures on to my desk top PC and I lost all the metadata as well as the captions on the Windows 10 PC.
I am wanting to pick the brain pools is there a way to keep my captions or am I going to be manual relabeling the imported photos on the Windows PC my team mates are using.
Looking for honest answers from the brain pool, be there done that folks.
Thank you all for your sharing. JAM.

Thanks Joel. Could you perhaps assist with a Mac 'Photos' app issue? Having moved from Windows to Mac only just recently I have also migrated all of my photos to the 'Photos' app. Whilst 'Keyword' and 'Location' description are self explanatory, I am not sure what to type into the 'Caption' and 'Title' sections of each photo to make perfect sense when at a later stage one has to work with the collection. I am also wondering if I could now delete all of the jpegs in the 'Pictures' folder, with the exception of the 'Photos Library' file? Thanks for any help you could offer, Ralf

      Hi @poojavyas6892!
Do you use Apple Photos? If you own a Mac, using Apple Photos would be my first choice in photo management. If this is the case, you would not import from Image Capture to Apple Photos, you would just go straight to Apple Photos.
Have you rebooted your Mac? What macOS are you currently on?
There is also an option to repair your Apple Photo Library. I've linked an Apple Support article below for reference. This can help with a variety of issues and won't hurt to do it just because.

4:19 The photo you took at here shows 4:17PM....BUT, after you AirDropped it to your MAC, at 5:09 it shows the photo was taken at 4:18 PM...however, that is not the time the photo was taken, it was the time you AirDropped it. WHY? I notice AirDrop will download 30 photos from 30 different dates with the proper dates each photo was taken...then one day, it decides to download the last 3 months of photos with the Date Created = to the date you downloaded it to your MAC. The original date and time stamp on the photos seems to suddenly get buried in the metadata but AirDrop arbitrarily starts to hide it from the file in Finder as your video shows happening. The photo on your mac should show 4:17. After YEARS of using AirDrop w/o this problem, TONIGHT this AirDrop process has decided to show all my past month's photos as taken TONIGHT when I downloaded them UUUUUUUGGGHH! WHY? No one on the web seems to know how to fix this.

    • @gummansgubbe6225

Have you heard about the Pareto principle? That is why. When companies develop new stuff they use the 20% that know what they are doing, for maintenance they use the 80%. In Apples case I believe the ratio is more like 1/99.
How to fix it? You need to keep your own records and files. It is rather easy for music (I learned it after Apple Music deleted 1100 songs from a folder called Music/Music/Media.localised), I haven't tried for photos yet.

I wouldn't even plug the iPad into the computer as it could be done all wirelessly if you're using OneDrive or iCloud Drive. Essentially you can save the PDF on your iPad into the location of Files on the iPad and that can sync to iCloud Drive and that can easily be accessed on any other device including your Dell PC.

iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch are all similar. iOS devices.

Can Apple make this process any MORE complicated? 🤬

They heard your prayer. I can't select "Import to Photos" anymore. My wife has to open an app called "Airdrop" before she "syncs". But that "good ole' USB cable" is something the Einsteins in EU has to take responsibility for.

I have a love/hate relationship with this channel. Love the subject matter-lots I need to learn. But hate how the information is presented like you’re drinking from a firehose. He presents the material so fast and never seems to pause to take a breath. Just difficult for me to digest what he is trying to teach.

you did not show us what we needed to press to get the photos from the phone onto the computer with the wire what a fail. Horrible video and you just talk and talk instead of doing it. JUST because you are syncing your photos with iCloud does not mean everyone does.

why in the world do I need to transfer any photos I want to view large to my computer or iCloud (pay for extra service) instead of just plugging it in and viewing it on my Mac?! Mac you piece of garbage, instead of being able to view the image you want to sell me services to view the image or make duplicates all over the place! worthless engineers.
