    There were some things I didn’t quite understand about iCloud and I tried learning something via videos which were all over the place with their info and I just couldn’t watch but for less than a minute. So I decided to use iCloud for a while on and off and then stopped bc I was unable to understand and coordinate all those files I had “roaming around” on my different devices! But thank goodness that I serendipitously came across your video which clarified everything for me, EVERYTHING! And you did this in just a few minutes! You were so clear and easy to understand from the very beginning! Thank you so much! You saved me a whole lot of time, especially time spent on other useless videos! 👍

    thank you!! very structured and clear tutorial. nice that you two macbooks to show and not only talk about what happens. I hope your channel is gonna refinance the second one. :) litlle side story... yeah the "cloud" is just another computer somewhere. people trust to much. because of that word. last year in france the building of a cloud service burnt down with most of its servers. so many people lost all their data. It's always good to have a second and third backup. I use icloud as an "instant" backup and time machine for my harddrives. I even keep my backup drives in different places "far" away. you know. :)

    WOW!!! I wish someone or you had posted this video earlier because I have learned all these methods - well a hard way...lol!!
    Anyways, I watched the whole video, few points I learned from this video was understanding that iCloud when signed in, comes with its own desktop and documents and it sucks up all the data from out machine and puts it on cloud based, virtual desktop and documents!!
    You are just simply, amazing with your way of work and the kind of topics you bring up. Good Luck!

      @Learnwithjoel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much @Sheh Zad! I appreciate the kind words!
      I would clarify that when you choose the option to Sync the Desktop & Documents Folder to iCloud, it's just taking the existing Desktop and Documents folder on the Mac and making it part of the Cloud. Those are the only two folders that let you be part of that environment aside from the main iCloud Drive folder.
      Seriously though, thank you for the support and your feedback means a lot!

    Thanks for this very clear presentation. I love Apple software and I use pages, notes, sheet, and keynote extensively. However, I found Apple’s file management inferior to Google when it comes to sharing files with the public.
    I’m writing a book containing a bunch of spreadsheets which, to my knowledge, cannot be embedded in a published pages book, and I have had to insert these sheets in Google drive link (avoiding internet sites and their annoying ads) for readers to download these spreadsheets. Why? Well for some strange reason publicly-accessible iCloud links expire after about one month.
    So I have the very strange situation of having Apple sheet files stored on Google drive that are only accessible to users with Apple sheet.

    Wow, a lot of helpful information there. I watched it twice and made many changes on my Mac as you took me on the journey. The depth of your understanding is impressive and I have many things I use my Macs for that you also do (photos, videos, and other documents). You have really made iCloud, Finder and Time Machine make much more sense, however I have some questions that I still need more advice with. First, I recently bought a used MacBook Pro and upgraded the SSD to 2TB. I plugged it into my iMac to migrate everything. My iMac uses Time Machine as a backup and I use iCloud to sync my two computers as well as my iPhone and iPad. I am a photographer and do some videos as well to storage is always a major concern. Here is my question: Should I use a separate HD and Time Machine on each computer? Or...Does Time Machine see all hard drives and back everything up? I have other questions also about organizing and trying to make Photos and Lightroom Classic a more simplified system but lets tackle the Time Machine first. Thanks for your incredible knowledge base and presentation skills!!!

    Excellent video. I have been using Macs since 1987 with System 3 using 800K floppy discs. I have gradually evolved the way I work as the Apple ecosystem has developed. Unfortunately when iCloud started it couldn't handle all my data files (not a real pseudo hard drive then), so I invested in Dropbox to synchronise between desktop and notebook computers. I am now migrating from Dropbox to iCloud, but I need to work out what I can remove from [paid for] Dropbox! With my data storage also including external hard drives, I am using around 10TB (including TimeMachine backup and a full main drive clone) so it is quite a mental task to work out what is where, and where it should be! Oh yes, I still have a USB floppy disc drive unit, just in case - and it works!

    Hey Joel this video is excellent! Quick questions. If I turn on sharing Documents and Desktops in iCloud Drive on my main iMac, does it move those actual files from the computer? I leave files I access regularly on my desktop so curious how that works. If they remain on my desktop, if I edit it from the desktop, does it then sync to iCloud Drive, too and vice versa (if I edit it on my iPad, does the edited version appear on my original desktop)? Also what if I turn on desktop and documents on two iMacs? What happens then in iCloud Drive? Thanks for this fantastic video.

    My iMac file structure is a mess. Files I create on my imac, cannot be found on my iPad. It is frustrating. This video gave me several things in my setup to check. I will be searching in your vids for organizing my filing structure. Also looking for ways to search and eliminate duplicates. You appear to be a really good teacher. Glad I found your channel. My entire working career was on a PC. In retirement I switched everything to Apple. Some things I really like about it. The Apple files structure has kicked my butt from day one. Anyways, you have given me some hope.

      @Learnwithjoel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @Nick T!
      I'm glad this video was helpful and gave a little inspiration to keep moving forward and empower you to learn more!
      I have a few additional videos of mine that I'll link below in reference to your questions...
      THE MOST IMPORTANT APP ON YOUR MAC! - Getting started with The Finder!
      th-cam.com/video/T2M3i652IUM/w-d-xo.html
      The Finder is your BEST FRIEND on your Mac. It's literally your entire file structure and digital filing cabinet. Master it and you will be 100% more efficient. That video above is a still relevant for the most part, but if you're on the latest macOS, you may have additional options of what you see there. Either way, it should still be helpful.
      iCloud Drive in itself is related to this, but it just has the options to sync the files to the cloud in addition to other devices. This video here you've already watched talks about iCloud Drive on the Mac, but I'll link one down below that focuses on iCloud Drive and file Management on an iPhone or iPad:
      UNDERSTANDING Apple's FILES App and HOW TO ORGANIZE DOCUMENTS in iCLOUD DRIVE on an iPhone and iPad!
      th-cam.com/video/yYvDZq8dD5M/w-d-xo.html
      As far as duplicates are considered, are you talking about duplicates of just folder and files in general or duplicates of photos?
      I do have a video about duplicate photos that I'll link for reference, but not one of files/folders:
      HOW TO DELETE DUPLICATE PHOTOS in Apple Photos - IN DEPTH review of software to FIX your Duplicates!
      th-cam.com/video/VpQ5kDc3BvQ/w-d-xo.html
      If it's duplicates of files/folders you're looking to conquer, first get an excellent grip on the Finder and that may help you figure it out. If not, there are some third party apps that are able to do this, but I haven't looked at them in a long while to even recommend a good one to use.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!

    I think the biggest inconvenience with iCloud Drive or any other similar service is that by default the preference is to MOVE files there and potentially lose them when I don’t want to use it, instead of copying and simply helping with copying files across devices, whenever i’m turning off iCloud Drive , the default action is to REMOVE files I currently have locally into iCloud Drive, as if by punishment, instead of simply leaving the device be, not everyone will always think of storing files locally or on an external drive, safe from the wrath of leaving iCloud Drive or similar services, my losing files that way before is one of the reasons for completely turning off iCloud altogether on all my devices and manually transferring files whenever I want to without the growing risk over time of forgetting how it works and losing files again.
    That said the video illustrates very nicely how it works
